Ten years ago, when Jeff Daniels decided to show coffee shops and small theater venues what he could do with his one-of-a-kind 1934 Martin flat top, a thumb pick, and his folky, story-telling delivery, he knew he was opening himself up for critical attack.

Thanks largely to some of his predecessors

US commanders concerned about Ramadan fighting

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? The top U.S. commander in Afghanistan has until mid-October to submit a plan for the initial withdrawal of American troops. His decisions may hinge in part on whether the latest surge in attacks continues through the holy month of Ramadan.

Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, says commanders are hearing that Taliban leaders may try to regain lost ground during the Islamic holy period, which begins Monday.

Mullen says Marine Gen. John Allen, who has just taken over as top U.S. commander here, needs time to evaluate security needs and put together a detailed withdrawal plan.

Mullen's comments for the first time laid out a deadline for Allen to submit plans for withdrawing 10,000 U.S. troops by the end of the year.

MANKATO, Minn. (AP) ? Randy Moss is calling it a career after 13 seasons in the NFL as one of the most dynamic and polarizing players the league has ever seen.

Moss's agent, Joel Segal, said Monday that the receiver was considering offers from several teams, but made the decision to retire. Segal declined to comment specifically on the offers, instead saying his 34-year-old client felt the time was right to step away.

"Randy has weighed his options and considered the offers and has decided to retire," Segal said.

If this indeed is the end for Moss, he leaves the game with some of the gaudiest statistics ever posted by a receiver. His 153 touchdowns are tied with Terrell Owens for second on the career list, and he's also fifth in yards (14,858) and tied with Hines Ward for eighth in receptions (954).

Those numbers, and his status as perhaps the best deep threat in NFL history, will make him a strong candidate for the Hall of Fame. But voters will also be weighing those numbers and his six Pro Bowl seasons against a history of boorish behavior and a penchant for taking plays off when he lost interest in the game.

His career started with seven electric seasons with the Minnesota Vikings before he went dormant for two years in Oakland. He re-emerged as a force with the New England Patriots in 2007, hauling in a single-season record 23 TD passes from Tom Brady to help the Patriots reach the Super Bowl.

Moss was traded back to the Vikings in October of last season, but the celebrated reunion lasted just four weeks. Fed up with his petulant behavior, Vikings coach Brad Childress cut Moss in November, a stunning move that played a role in the coach's dismissal a few weeks later.

Moss finished the season with eight games in Tennessee, but made little impact with the Titans. Segal said earlier this summer that the receiver was training hard and determined to prove to the doubters that he could still dominate the game like he had in the past.

"Randy has been a great player for a long time," said Bob Pruett, Moss' college coach at Marshall. "He's choosing this on his own terms and I think that's good. If that's what he wants to do, that's what he should do."

Throughout his career, Moss earned the reputation as one of the most dangerous players in the game, when he wanted to be. His combination of size, speed and intelligence has rarely been seen for a player at his position, and he deserves some credit for the influx of Cover 2 defenses throughout the NFL that were designed in large part to prevent Moss from burning them down the field.

Trouble off the field in high school prevented Moss from attending Notre Dame or Florida State, so he landed at Marshall and scored 54 touchdowns in two electrifying seasons with the Thundering Herd.

The off-field questions hurt Moss in the 1998 draft. He fell to the Vikings at pick No. 21 and he spent the next seven years making every GM in the league who passed on him regret it. He scored 17 touchdowns as a rookie to help the Vikings reach the NFC title game and only once failed to score at least 10 TDs in a season in his first tour with the team.

He also got into several controversies along the way, bumping a traffic cop in downtown Minneapolis, squirting a referee with a water bottle during a game and leaving the field early in a game against Washington, just to name a few.

Sensing a change of scenery was needed, the Vikings traded Moss to Oakland in 2005, where he spent two quiet seasons before his career was revived in New England.

Vikings fans were euphoric at the news of his return last season, but things soured in a hurry. He caught 13 passes for 174 yards and two touchdowns in four games back in purple, clashed with Childress in the locker room and turned some teammates off with his poor treatment of a team caterer toward the end of his run. He hugged former Patriots teammates after a Vikings loss, and then bizarrely stepped to a podium to fawn over the Patriots, criticize the Vikings for ignoring his strategic advice, and announce his plan to interview himself the rest of the season instead of letting reporters do it.

Next stop, Tennessee, where he caught just six passes in eight games.

Life coaching? hm, what a strange concept. Or is it?

After all, life is so precious, perhaps it should come with a guide that instructs you how to use your precious time, and how not to waste it by making irreversible mistakes.

I can?t decide whether life coaching is a good idea, or a sad, ridiculous one. Perhaps I need a coach to help me decide on this one..

What?s ridiculous about it is that some of the life coaches are so young that you can?t imagine how can they possibly give any advice when they didn?t experience life yet??

Now, seriously, I think that we made life so complicated that many of us are confused and need some guidance. There are so many choices you can make in life, so many options out there, and who knows if you chose the right one?

The answer is: you have to choose what?s RIGHT FOR YOU.

You are the only one that can decide that for yourself. No one else can coach you or decide for you the best path to take.

These are the words of a psychologist I once talked to. She amazed me when she admitted that in fact, the people that go to see psychologists are usually not capable of taking responsibility for their own life. They are unhappy and they are not sure why? They can?t think for themselves. They want someone else to think for them and give them the answers, to make decisions for them.

That was a shocking admission coming from a professional, nevertheless so true!

You are the only person that knows what makes you happy and no one else can decide for you what choice you should make?

That?s why it is so hard to define happiness. It is due to the fact that happiness is very individual and what makes you happy may not bring joy to someone else.

The state of happiness usually comes from the relation between one?s level of expectations from life versus the realization of these expectations.

So, if you wish to attain this state of well being you will need to think what things bring you joy or satisfaction, and pursue them.

Having said that, sometimes we are not sure what would make us happy, or worse, we think we know what we want but when we achieve it we realize that it didn?t make us happier? in other words, we don?t always know what?s good for us. Sometimes we think that if we could only lose 5 kilo or if we had more money we would be happier?

Amazingly, many of the things we enjoy and make most of us happy don?t cost anything: being surrounded by family or friends, creating things, discovering, learning new things (yes, learning), helping other people or animals in need, all these can bring huge satisfaction and feelings of achievement. These will give meaning to your life and enrich you with a spectrum of experiences, and will also make you feel more important. Feeling insignificant or powerless is one of our biggest enemies, and can lead to unhappiness.

Money has an interesting role in attaining happiness: whilst having money does not necessarily make you happy, the lack of it cam make you very unhappy. However some lottery winners have confessed in the past that winning the big jackpot did not make them happier, on the contrary?

Some other deeply unhappy people (some even born with the silver spoon) occasionally turn to drugs because they don?t have a focus in their life such as an occupation, and so they lack the sense of achievement that comes from doing things, creating. Some just have too much time on their hands as they have never developed any serious interests, since they never had to work? So finding a focus, a project, an activity that you enjoy or even just bringing joy to others, yes, to others, is in fact paramount to your own well being and happiness.

England expects as draw shines on Capello (AFP)

RIO DE JANEIRO (AFP) ? England stalwart Rio Ferdinand said he expected England to book their place at the 2014 World Cup finals after Saturday's draw treated the team kindly.

Former Brazilian champion Ronaldo drew seeded England in Group H alongside Euro 2012 qualifying rivals Montenegro, Ukraine, old rivals Poland, Moldova and San Marino.

After winning in 1966, and then just failing to get past Germany in the 1970 quarters, England promptly slipped up against Poland, constantly frustrated by their keeper Jan Tomaszewski, in a 1973 qualifier.

Then they lost out to Italy four years later after Don Revie had dropped his bombshell that he was resigning mid-campaign to go and coach in the United Arab Emirates.

In those days, only one side qualified from the group and the Italians made it instead.

When the World Cup last crossed the Atlantic, England were missing once again as they failed to qualify for the finals at USA '94 under Graham Taylor.

But the greatest humiliation of all was the one that they suffered the last time the World Cup was held in Brazil, when Joe Gaetjens scored the only goal as the United States won 1-0 in Belo Horizonte during the 1950 finals.
