Iran's Salehi says six powers set February 25 meeting

MUNICH (Reuters) - Six world powers have proposed holding a new round of talks with Iran on its nuclear program in Kazakhstan on February 25, Iran's Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi said on Sunday.

"I have good news - I heard yesterday that the P5+1 or EU3+3 will be meeting in Kazakhstan on February 25," he said at the Munich Security Conference.

He did not make clear whether Iran had agreed to the meeting.

A European diplomat said the six powers had proposed a new round of talks on February 25 in Kazakhstan but that Iran had still not given a firm answer. The two sides have been haggling over a date and venue for new talks for weeks.

Western powers suspect Iran of seeking to develop the capability to build a nuclear bomb, but Iran says its nuclear program is entirely peaceful.

Salehi said he would give "positive consideration" to comments by U.S. Vice-President Joe Biden on Saturday in which he held out the possibility of direct talks with Iran.

Salehi said there was "no red line for bilateral negotiations" as long as the other side had a real intention to resolve the issue.

CDC says pet hedgehogs are behind recent Salmonella outbreak in ...

    image.jpg

Flickr phot by Peter G. Trimming

Pocket pets are very popular in families with children, and it's no wonder: they're small, cute and very different than traditional pets, like dogs or cats.

The considerations and care of pocket pets differ as well, and one species has been cause for alarm as of late because of that.

The Centers for Disease Control indicates that in the last year, 20 people have been infected by a rare but dangerous form of salmonella bacteria, Salmonella Typhimurium, and investigators say the illnesses were linked to contact with pet hedgehogs, including some in Michigan.

    One person died.

Other animals that are more commonly known to carry the pathogen are frogs, toads, turtles, snakes, lizards - even chicks and ducklings.

Although any hedgehog can carry salmonella, the African Pygmy has been most often cited as being a common thread in the majority of cases reported.

Handwashing is a crucial practice that needs to be used by everyone that has contact with animals of any kind, and here are a few rules of thumb to prevent illness:

  • Clean up after your pet. If you have a dog, use a plastic bag to pick up the stool, and clean up the stool while on walks or from the yard and dispose of the stool in a tightly sealed plastic bag. For cats, scoop the litter box daily and dispose of the stool in a tightly sealed plastic bag. After contact with an animal's fecal matter, wash your hands with soap and running water. (Abide by the "Happy Birthday Rule"!)

  • Wash your hands after feeding your pet (treats, too).

  • Wash your pet's bowls and foraging toys after each feeding. Regular washing of water bowls is good, too.

  • If you transfer your pet's kibble to a storage container, do not mix batches of food. Be sure to wash the container, rinsing and drying thoroughly before adding a new bag of food to it. Save the packaging (it has the valuable UPC and 'best by' information on it)!

  • Wash your hands after handling your hedgehog and other pocket pets.

  • Wipe down the area where your pet eats their food, and using a mild bleach/dish washing detergent solution is a good idea, ensuring that you rinse thoroughly.

Ex-SEAL/author Chris Kyle fatally shot on gun range

GLEN ROSE, Texas (AP) ? Former Navy SEAL and "American Sniper" author Chris Kyle was fatally shot along with another man Saturday on a Texas gun range, a sheriff told local newspapers.

Erath County Sheriff Tommy Bryant said Kyle, 38, and a second man were found dead at Rough Creek Lodge's shooting range west of Glen Rose, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram and Stephenville Empire-Tribune. Glen Rose is about 50 miles southwest of Fort Worth.

Bryant did not immediately return phone calls to The Associated Press seeking comment late Saturday and early Sunday. A woman who answered the phone at the lodge where the shooting occurred declined comment and referred calls to the sheriff's office.

Investigators did not immediately release the name of the second victim, according to the newspapers.

Witnesses told sheriff's investigators that a gunman opened fire on the men around 3:30 p.m. Saturday, then fled in a pickup truck belonging to one of the victims, according to the Star-Telegram. The newspapers said a 25-year-old man was later taken into custody in Lancaster, southeast of Dallas, and that charges were expected.

Lancaster police did not immediately return calls for comment.

The motive for the shooting was unclear.

Kyle wrote the best-selling book, "American Sniper: The Autobiography of the Most Lethal Sniper in U.S. Military History," detailing his 150-plus kills of insurgents from 1999 to 2009.

Kyle was sued by former Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura over a portion of the book that claims Kyle punched Ventura in a 2006 bar fight over unpatriotic remarks. Ventura says the punch never happened and that the claim by Kyle defamed him.

Kyle had asked that Ventura's claims of invasion of privacy and "unjust enrichment" be dismissed, saying there was no legal basis for them. But a federal judge said the lawsuit should proceed. Both sides were told to be ready for trial by Aug. 1.

Hackers call Iraqi PM 'oppressor' on his website

(AP) ? Hackers have broken into the official website of the embattled Iraqi prime minister, calling him an "oppressor."

Nouri al-Malik is facing a surge of protests by Iraq's Sunni minority, tensions with the autonomous Kurdish region and discontent among fellow Shiites.

A statement on his website Saturday compared him to Bashar Assad, the Syrian leader who brutally cracked down on an uprising against him that has turned into a civil war.

The statement by "Team Kuwait Hackers" told the Iraqi leader, "You want to be like Bashar Assad ... Bashar is over."

The message was accompanied by a picture of wailing black-clad women in mourning. It was up for several hours until the site was taken down.

Telephone calls to al-Maliki's office went unanswered.
