Google?s Project Glass: An Exercise In Mediocrity?

rose4.26.12So Google X founder Sebastian Thrun was on Charlie Rose last night showing off his latest creation, Project Glass. Which, if you haven't seen by now, is quite possibly one of the most ambitious consumer products to come out of the Googleplex in recent memory. But until Thrun's appearance on Rose, we didn't actually know how the glasses would work other than the sizzle reel that was put together earlier this month. A couple of things struck me as odd, though. Thrun never actually gave any voice commands during his demo of the glasses, while in the video everything was driven by voice. But that's not what has me worried about Project Glass. During the interview, Thrun snapped a photo of Rose and uploaded it to his Google+ account. So far, it appears to work as advertised but take a look at the image quality and tell me whether or not it's acceptable in this day and age. It's not, it's terrible.

Google MapsGL updates 3D buildings, improves virtual tourism

Google MapsGL update adds parallax perspective, improves virtual tourism

Google's been spending some quality time with its Maps offering of late. Most recently, it overhauled the 3D buildings and landmarks to make them, well, better. This time, its Maps' juiced up sibling MapsGL that's been feeling the paternal love. The WebGL-based 3D renderings have been the same treatment, making your virtual aerial tours all the more realistic. Now, as you glide over the landscape, your view of the buildings is much more like real life. Or you could just take the lazy tourism one step further. Hit the source for examples.

Trained By The Best: Facebook And J.C. Penney Hire Apple Design Execs

apple-logoSo, in case you haven't heard, Apple is doing pretty well. Things are different now without Steve at the helm, but change isn't always bad. Although George Colony, taking the contrarian approach, would like to disagree. Today, we've gotten word that Apple Senior Art Director Sharon Hwang, who headed the graphics design team, has left Apple to join Facebook's product design team. Though it looks like Hwang joined Facebook last month, the Facebook Design Team officially announced her hiring today -- fittingly, on their Facebook page.

Zynga Beats Q1 Estimates With Revenues Of $321 Million As Mobile Usage Climbs To 21M Daily

zynga-earningsZynga's revenues rose 32 percent to $321 million in the first quarter, beating analysts' estimates of $316.8 million in revenue and earnings of 5 cents a share excluding stock-based expenses. Bookings* came in at a record $329 million, up 15 percent over the year before, and up 7 percent compared to the previous quarter -- meaning Zynga didn't see that seasonal decline in revenues that Facebook did. The company said revenue growth was driven by the launch of games like Hidden Chronicles and Castleville and its increasing footprint on mobile platforms. Overall, Zynga posted a net loss of $85.4 million, mostly because of stock-based expenses. Excluding those expenses of $133.9 million, Zynga would have had earnings per share of 6 cents or $47 million. That would be down 38 percent from the year before. The company also raised its annual guidance to $1.425 billion to $1.5 billion in bookings, up from $1.35 to $1.45 billion. Shares are down 1 percent in after-hours trading to $9.33.
