Iowa Caucuses Aren't Really About Iowa Anymore

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Newt Gingrich is fading faster than a winter sunset in a plowed-down cornfield. So why did a pro-Mitt Romney super PAC just go up with a vicious new attack ad against him here? Isn't that overkill?

The answer is simple enough: The race here is no longer just about the Iowa caucuses, or even about Iowa. It is about the next three primaries in January, which, taken together, are likely to decide the GOP presidential nomination.

For the Romney campaign, it is not enough for Gingrich to lose next Tuesday; they want to bury him and spread salt on his grave. As flawed as Gingrich is, the former House speaker remains a formidable debater and dangerous counterpuncher, and there are more debates ahead, including pivotal ones in New Hampshire on Jan. 7 and 8.

Gingrich also has some fabulously wealthy independent backers, who show no signs of losing their allegiance to him.

And he possesses strong, if provisional, poll numbers in New Hampshire (with its Jan. 10 primary), South Carolina (Jan. 21) and Florida (Jan. 31). He is running a strong though distant second (17 percent) in the Granite State, where he has the support of the dominant Union Leader newspaper and its acid-penned editor, Joe McQuaid. He is still leading in polls in South Carolina (37 percent) and Florida (43 percent). Moreover, he is at least nominally a Southerner -- that is, a Pennsylvania native educated in the South who was elected to Congress from Georgia.

Thursday evening, the Gingrich campaign asked members of the press if they wanted to join the former speaker on a charter flight to New Hampshire on caucus night in Iowa. The message: Forget Iowa; we're on to the next state ....

All of which is why, at least for now, Romney doesn't mind the rise of Rick Santorum. The Romneyans wouldn't mind if the former Pennsylvania senator finished ahead of Gingrich in the race to be the alternative to Romney and Texas Rep. Ron Paul. (Texas Gov. Rick Perry, unless he stages a miraculous comeback in Iowa, doesn't figure in these calculations.)

So should Romney's people be wary about what they wish for? Is Santorum a sleeping giant about to wake up?

At a campaign event in Muscatine, it was hard to see that. Santorum was earnest and, to a conservative crowd, endearingly passionate on issues of family, traditional marriage and welfare reform. It was his third visit in a year to the small Iowa city, and on this occasion he drew a crowd of about 100, perhaps half of them supporters.

They liked him well enough. They liked his emphasis on family issues and his effort to link love of family to fear of federal debt and federal bureaucratic oppression. "He is who I am," said Greg Bickel, a former member of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department who has returned home to Iowa to raise his family. "I identify with his values."

But Santorum, who served in both the House and Senate, has a tendency to recite his history of legislative accomplishment -- which makes sense to a former member, but which sets off alarm bells in the minds of conservative, anti-Washington voters.

"I liked what he said about family, but when he talked, he sounded too much like a congressman," said Linda Steele, a former schoolteacher who is now staying home to raise her kids. "Ron Paul doesn't sound like that."

Still, Santorum is coming on steadily in the polls, and he is expanding plans to compete in the other early states. Thursday night he went up with his first television ad in New Hampshire, a necessary move to take advantage of whatever windfall he gets from his Iowa finish.

A fundraising appeal the same night was successful, according to Santorum's national communications director, Hogan Gidley. "We raised 25 times what we raised on a normal day a week ago," Gidley said, although he refused to give a specific figure.

Santorum claims to have made more visits to New Hampshire than any other candidate except Romney (who has a home there) and more to South Carolina than any other candidate. But he remains in the low single digits in polls of both states. He is pursuing the classic "early state" strategy perfected by Jimmy Carter in 1976, but rarely duplicated since.

Can Santorum do it? His aides hope so. Romney is betting otherwise, which is why he and his allies are still attacking Newt.

Lesnar retires after first-round loss at UFC 141 (AP)

LAS VEGAS ? Brock Lesnar took one last kick to his stomach and crumpled at the side of the cage, unable to fight back when Alistair Overeem pounced.

Lesnar had been finished by a 6-foot-5 Dutch kick boxer in the first round at UFC 141. A few minutes later, the UFC's former heavyweight champion finished his own meteoric mixed martial arts career.

Lesnar retired from the UFC after Overeem stopped him with one vicious kick to the body at 2:26 of the first round in their heavyweight bout Friday night, leaving the UFC heading into 2012 without its biggest pay-per-view star.

"This is the last time you'll see me in the octagon," Lesnar said.

Largely thanks to his fame from a career in pro wrestling, the hulking Lesnar (5-3) played a significant role in expanding the UFC's profile and fan base over the past four years. He beat Randy Couture in 2008 to win the heavyweight title, defending it twice before losing the belt to Cain Velasquez last year.

But Lesnar has fought just three times in the past 2 1/2 years while dealing with bouts of a lower-intestinal ailment that nearly killed him. The accumulation of pain and rehabilitation finally undid Lesnar, whose famed strength and stubbornness couldn't overcome diverticulitis.

"I've had a really difficult couple of years with my disease, and I'm going to officially say tonight is the last time," Lesnar said.

Lesnar's return from a 14-month injury absence was a short, one-sided beating. After taking damage from two knee blows early on, he couldn't recover from a kick to the liver from Overeem (36-11), who made a stellar UFC debut despite getting cut near his right eye by a punch from Lesnar.

The 34-year-old Lesnar's announcement stunned fans who already realized he faced a difficult matchup in the UFC's traditional end-of-the-year event in its hometown. The matchup was a classic MMA clash of styles, with Lesnar's brute wrestling contrasting sharply with Overeem's vicious striking.

"I had no idea he would do that, (but) am I surprised? No," UFC President Dana White said. "Brock Lesnar has made a lot of money in his career and has achieved a lot of things. ... He brought a lot of excitement to the heavyweight division. What he accomplished in a short amount of time is amazing, but I get it. It doesn't shock me."

Overeem is three years younger but much more experienced than Lesnar, hurting the former champion at least twice earlier in the round while Lesnar failed in his attempt at a one-legged takedown.

"I promised my wife and my kids if I won this fight, I would get a title shot, and that would be my last fight," Lesnar said. "But if I lost tonight ... you've been great."

Overeem will get the next shot at UFC heavyweight champion Junior Dos Santos, who watched from a seat near the octagon.

Overeem is a champion kick boxer who has fought in multiple promotions over the past decade, winning titles in Dream and Strikeforce with nearly unbeatable striking and size. He joined the UFC in September, finally presenting his formidable skills and intimidating physique to the sport's largest audience.

"My experience in UFC was, it's huge," Overeem said. "I think it's like 100 times bigger than Strikeforce. K-1 (kick boxing) is big, but this is a lot bigger. I was a little bit blown away, still am. I loved every second of it."

White might have given an immediate title shot to Overeem if the timing had been better, but Dos Santos only claimed Velasquez's belt in early November. Overeem welcomed a debut against Lesnar, even guaranteeing a knockout in the first two rounds.

"First or second round, I promised," Overeem said.

Lesnar hadn't fought since losing his heavyweight belt to Velasquez in October 2010, cancelling a bout against Dos Santos last June in Vancouver after another flare-up of diverticulitis. The former NCAA wrestling champion and fake WWE wrestler kept his unparalleled popularity during his recovery, and Lesnar used the time off to modify both his diet and his standup game, attempting to improve his biggest weakness.

As it turned out, Lesnar couldn't improve enough to contend with the supremely skilled Overeem, who embraced Lesnar afterward.

The undercard at the MGM Grand Garden featured two upsets: Lightweight Nate Diaz won a bloody unanimous decision over Donald "Cowboy" Cerrone with superior boxing, and Johny Hendricks stopped welterweight star Jon Fitch with one punch just 12 seconds into their bout.

In the co-main event, Diaz (15-7) backed up his tough talk and rude behavior in a fight that had the sellout crowd on its feet as he battered Cerrone, nearly a 3-to-1 favorite in the MGM Grand sportsbook, for most of the three-round standup fight.

Diaz, the brother of bad-boy welterweight Nick Diaz, picked apart Cerrone's defense for most of the fight, leaving Cerrone bloody after his first loss in seven fights since September 2010.

Cerrone (17-4) knocked down Diaz at least a half-dozen times with kicks and leg-whips, but Cerrone refused to fight Diaz on the ground, repeatedly allowing Diaz to get up.

The unusual strategy showed respect for Diaz's ground skills, but also minimized the importance of those knockdown shots in the eyes of the judges, who scored the bout 30-27 twice and 29-28 once, all for Diaz.

Hendricks (12-1) ascended to elite status with one sneaky left hook that caught Fitch (27-4-1) right on the button, flattening the favored San Jose fighter, whose return from a 10-month absence was stunningly brief. Hendricks, a two-time NCAA champion wrestler at Oklahoma State, completely stunned Fitch, who had lost just one fight since December 2002.

Early in the pay-per-view portion of the card, Swedish light heavyweight Alexander Gustafsson (13-1) stopped veteran Vladimir Matyushenko with a perfect left hand midway through the first round.

Unbeaten featherweight Jim Hettes got new fans' attention with a comprehensive thrashing of veteran Nam Phan, repeatedly threatening to finish the fight with strikes and ground work.

Nigerians fear more church attacks after 39 killed (AP)

MADALLA, Nigeria ? Women returned to clean the blood from St. Theresa Catholic Church on Monday and one man wept uncontrollably amid its debris as a Nigerian Christian association demanded protection for its churches. At least 35 people died at St. Theresa and dozens more were wounded as radical Muslim militants launched coordinated attacks across Africa's most populous nation within hours of one another. Four more people were killed in other violence blamed on the group known as Boko Haram. Crowds gathered among the burned-out cars in the church's dirt parking lot Monday, angry over the attack and fearful that the group will target more of their places of worship. It was the second year in a row that the extremists seeking to install Islamic Shariah law across the country of 160 million staged such attacks. Last year, a series of bombings on Christmas Eve killed 32 people in Nigeria. Rev. Father Christopher Jataudarde told The Associated Press that Sunday's blast happened as church officials gave parishioners white powder as part of a tradition celebrating the birth of Christ. Some already had left the church at the time of the bombing, causing the massive casualties. In the ensuing chaos, a mortally wounded man had cradled his wounded stomach and begged a priest for religious atonement. "Father, pray for me. I will not survive," he said. At least 52 people were wounded in the blast, said Slaku Luguard, a coordinator with Nigeria's National Emergency Management Agency. Victims filled the cement floors of a nearby government hospital, some crying in pools of their own blood. Pope Benedict XVI denounced the bombing at his Louis Vuitton Outlet Online post-Christmas blessing Monday, urging people to pray for the victims and Nigeria's Christian community. "In this moment, I want to repeat once again with force: Violence is a path that leads only to pain, destruction and death. Respect, reconciliation and love are the only path to peace," he said. The U.N. Security Council condemned the attacks "in the strongest terms" and called for the perpetrators, organizers, financiers and sponsors "of these reprehensible acts" to be brought to justice. The African Union also condemned the attacks and pledged to support Nigeria in its fight against terrorism. "Boko Haram's continued acts of terror and cruelty and absolute disregard for human life cannot be justified by any religion or faith," said a statement attributed to AU commission chairman Jean Ping. On Sunday, a bomb also exploded amid gunfire in the central Nigeria city of Jos and a suicide car bomber attacked the military in the nation's northeast. Three people died in those assaults. After the bombings, a Boko Haram spokesman using the nom de guerre Abul-Qaqa claimed responsibility for the attacks in an interview with The Daily Trust, the newspaper of record across Nigeria's Muslim north. The sect has used the newspaper in the past to communicate with public. "There will never be peace until our demands are met," the newspaper quoted the spokesman as saying. "We want all our brothers who have been incarcerated to be released; we want full implementation of the Sharia system and we want democracy and the constitution to be suspended." Boko Haram has carried out increasingly sophisticated and bloody attacks in its campaign to implement strict Shariah law across Nigeria. The group, whose name means "Western education is sacrilege" in the local Hausa language, is responsible for at least 504 killings this year alone, according to an Associated Press count. Last year, a series of Christmas Eve bombings in Jos claimed by the militants left at least 32 dead Louis Vuitton Outlet and 74 wounded. The group also claimed responsibility for the Aug. 26 bombing of the United Nations headquarters in Nigeria's capital Abuja that killed 24 people and wounded 116 others. While initially targeting enemies via hit-and-run assassinations from the back of motorbikes after the 2009 riot, violence by Boko Haram now has a new sophistication and apparent planning that includes high-profile attacks with greater casualties. That has fueled speculation about the group's ties as it has splintered into at least three different factions, diplomats and security sources say. They say the more extreme wing of the sect maintains contact with terror groups in North Africa and Somalia. Targeting Boko Haram has remained difficult, as sect members are scattered throughout northern Nigeria and the nearby countries of Cameroon, Chad and Niger. Analysts say political considerations also likely play a part in the country's thus-far muted response: President Goodluck Jonathan, a Christian from the south, may be hesitant to use force in the nation's predominantly Muslim north. Speaking late Sunday at a prayer service, Jonathan described the bombing as an "ugly incident." "There is no reason for these kind of dastardly acts," the president said in a ceremony aired by the state-run Nigerian Television Authority. "It's one of the burdens as a nation we have to carry. We believe it will not last forever." However, others don't remain as sure as the president. The northern state section of the powerful Christian Association of Nigeria issued a statement late Monday night demanding government protection for its churches, warning that "the situation may degenerate to a religious war." "We shall henceforth in the Louis Vuitton Outlet Store midst of these provocations and wanton destruction of innocent lives and property be compelled to make our own efforts and arrangements to protect the lives of innocent Christians and peace loving citizens of this country," the statement read. "We are therefore calling on all Christians to be law abiding but defend themselves whenever the need arises." ___ Jon Gambrell reported from Lagos, Nigeria and can be reached at Twitter. ___ Associated Press writers Ibrahim Garba in Kano, Nigeria and Bashir Adigun in Abuja, Nigeria contributed to this report.

Treasurys rise; Europe jitters keep demand strong (AP)

NEW YORK ? Treasury prices climbed Wednesday as more signs of strain emerged in the European banking system.

The price of the benchmark 10-year Treasury note rose 75 cents per $100 invested. Its yield fell to 1.93 percent from 2 percent late Tuesday.

News that European lenders parked a record amount of cash with the European Central Bank rather than lend it to each other got investors worried. Also the yield on Italy's 10-year government bond was still dangerously high at 6.97 percent, even after two successful auctions of short-term debt.

The latest worries about Europe kept demand strong for Treasurys.

The yield on the 30-year bond fell to 2.92 percent from 3.03 percent as its price rose $2.19 per $100 invested. The yield on the two-year note fell to 0.27 percent from 0.29 percent.

The three-month T-bill paid a yield of 0.01 percent. Its discount was not available.

Trading was quiet in the holiday-shortened week. U.S. markets were closed Monday in observance of Christmas.

Argentine president has thyroid cancer

Fernandez, 58, was easily elected to a second four-year term in October, vowing to deepen her unorthodox policies despite complaints from business leaders who said her heavy-handed management of the economy is stifling investment.

Fernandez was diagnosed with a papillary carcinoma that has not metastasized, said her spokesman, Alfredo Scoccimarro. The operation is scheduled to take place on January 4 and she is expected to take a leave of absence until January 24.

"The thyroid gland will have to be removed," said Buenos Aires-based cancer specialist Julio Moreno. "The prognosis is very good. The chances of being cured are 90 to 98 percent."

The cancer was detected last week during a routine check. Papillary carcinoma is the most common type of thyroid cancer and normally affects people under the age of 40, especially women.

A skilled orator fond of glamorous clothes, high heels and make-up, Fernandez still wears black as she mourns her husband and closest advisor, former President Nestor Kirchner, who died late last year.

When Kirchner died, many thought it spelled the end of the couple's idiosyncratic blend of state intervention, nationalist rhetoric and the championing of human rights in grains exporting powerhouse Argentina, the world's No. 3 soybean supplier.

But Fernandez pulled off a remarkable comeback on the back of a brisk economic expansion and an outpouring of public sympathy. She was re-elected with 54 percent of the vote, promising to stay true to her policies despite objections from Wall Street and international investors.

Latin America's No. 3 economy is growing at nearly 9 percent a year. But a worsening global economic outlook combined with entrenched high inflation at home are seen reining in Argentina's growth to about 4 percent next year.

Fernandez is one of several Latin American leaders to have cancer. Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez underwent chemotherapy earlier this year while Paraguayan President Fernando Lugo's lymphatic cancer is in remission.

And former Brazilian leader Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva is being successfully treated for a cancerous tumour on his Larynx, according to his doctors.

Toshiba Thrive 7" review

As 2011 draws to a close, it's fun to look back and think about how we began the year testing the first Honeycomb tablet, and are now ending it elbow-deep in me-too slates, many of them cut down to smaller sizes. So it should surprise no one, then, that Toshiba released the Thrive 7", a mini (and aptly named) version of the original Thrive, which went on sale last summer.

But in Toshiba's case, shrinking a tablet and calling it a day is a dicey proposition. After all, the 10-inch Thrive had some baggage -- namely, middling battery life, a chunky, toy-like design and a bug that initially kept it from waking after recharging. Indeed, the Thrive 7" looks near-identical, and even packs the same Tegra 2 chip, 16GB of storage and vanilla take on Honeycomb. Still, it brings an LED flash, keeps its big brother's 1280 x 800 display and costs less than the original did when it first came out. So are these improvements enough to make this smaller Thrive stand out? And how does it stack up against all those other 7-inch slates we've been testing lately? Let's find out.

What was the most shocking TV death of year?

Nick Briggs / HBO

Ned Stark's death will reverberate through upcoming seasons of "Game of Thrones."

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper

?

This year on TV, anyone could die at any time. (Warning: Lots of spoilers for TV shows that aired in 2011 ahead. And double warning: Some of the video clips are quite graphic.)

When we look back at the big moments on scripted television this year, many of them involve characters dying suddenly and shockingly.

Those who followed "Game of Thrones" not just on HBO, but via George R.R. Martin's books, knew this already. Even the most beloved characters aren't safe in the cruel world of Westeros.

One of the most shocking deaths, which has strong reverberations through all the books to come, happened this year on the series' first season. Ned Stark, loyal fighter and beloved father and husband, loses his head under the order of cruel, creepy kid king Joffrey Baratheon.

But there were plenty of other disturbing deaths on the small screen. Here are just a few, in no particular order.

1) Charlie Harper on "Two and a Half Men." He died offscreen, but it sounds like a bloody affair. According to his eyewitness and possible murderer, when hit by a Paris subway, his body exploded "like a balloon full of meat." But it couldn't have been as bloody as the offscreen drama involving Harper's portrayer, Charlie Sheen, who was replaced by Ashton Kutcher.

2) Kemal Pamuk on "Downton Abbey." All hail the writers of this juicy, sudsy British costume drama. The handsome Turkish attache was only in one episode, but he managed to threaten to blackmail a gay footman, sneak into eldest daughter Mary's room and convince her to give up her virginity, then die during the act. He's gone, but the drama he stirred up lives on. (The death, and the lengths Mary and her mother must go to to hide it, is reportedly based on a true story.)

3) Gus Fring, "Breaking Bad." No death was more visually shocking. The tables were turned on the drug king when Hector suicide-bombed his own wheelchair while Gus was in his hospital room. But even if you knew nothing about the show and what this meant for the plot, you had to gasp when Gus emerged from the room seemingly fine, then revealed that exactly half of his face was a melted hole.

?

4) Sophia Peletier, "Walking Dead." Once Sophia ran off into Zombieland, she became a bit of a plot joke. The hunt for her kept the characters trapped at Hershel's farm much longer than many viewers would have liked. And those who read the "Walking Dead"?graphic novels?may have assumed she was going to be fine on the TV series, as she remains in the comics. (In fact, according to the "Talking Dead" show, the crew shot the scene two different ways -- once with Sophia alive and emerging from the barn?healthy, and the second where she comes out as a zombie.) It's always hard to see a child die, but give "WD" credit, they stayed true to the nightmare of their setting. Zombies don't ask for age verification before they infect their victims.

?

We're not even going to pretend to list all the TV deaths this year. (Entertainment Weekly's list also includes deaths on "Big Love," "Boardwalk Empire," "American Horror Story" and more.)

Charlie Harper? Ned Stark? Tell us on Facebook which TV death was most shocking.

Dearborn woman dies on way to sister's wedding

Dearborn ? Eitedal Sufian Al-Gaithi was looking forward to attending and being a part of her older sister Noha's wedding on Christmas Day.

It is the custom in her native country of Yemen that everybody in the family participates in the wedding.

But she never made it.

She was killed in a car accident en route to Greenfield Manor, where the wedding was to take place.

"We hadn't even made it inside the hall, and instead of celebrating one daughter's wedding, we're mourning the death of another daughter," said her father, Sufian Al-Gaithi, 40, of Dearborn, who has three other daughters and two sons. Eitedal would have turned 23 on Jan. 23.

She had big dreams, and wanted her husband, Fattah, to share them. But Fattah remained in Bahrain while, her father said, she worked tirelessly trying to bring him to America.

"She was supposed to surprise him by flying there on Wednesday," Al-Gaithi said.

"Now we're trying to get the U.S. Embassy in Bahrain to allow him to come here to see her before she is buried."

Eitedal also cared for others at home.

"She lived with my parents and took care of them because they're both diabetic," said her father. "It is such a big loss for them also. We were afraid to tell them what happened for fear they might both have heart attacks and die themselves."

Al-Gaithi said his daughter was attending nursing school.

Al-Gaithi said his niece, Eiman Alammare, 21, who also was in the car, remains in critical condition in intensive care at Oakwood Hospital.

Eitedal Al-Gaithi and Alammare were ejected from a 2009 Jeep driven by a 20-year-old Dearborn man, Dearborn Police Sgt. Doug Topolski said.

"We're still trying to sort this all out, but it appears they were all northbound on Greenfield about 6:30 p.m. when the Jeep struck a 2008 Chevy Cobalt turning into the Manor, where they were also headed," Topolski said.

"The Jeep spun around and struck a building," he said. "Both of the victims were sitting in the rear seat and were ejected out the passenger door."

The Jeep's driver, a 19-year-old Dearborn woman driving the Cobalt and her two passengers were all treated for minor injuries and released, he said.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) ? Walking into his news conference to kick off an NFC East showdown week with the Dallas Cowboys, Tom Coughlin couldn't hide the injury.

There was a noticeable limp in his left leg, one that seemingly will bother the 65-year-old New York Giants coach for weeks and might require medical intervention down the road.

Coughlin didn't care. He wasn't going to discuss the extent of the injury sustained in Saturday's game with the Jets when he was slammed into by D.J Ware after the Giants running back was hit out of bounds.

All that was important was that the Giants (8-7) are playing Dallas (8-7) Sunday night at MetLife Stadium for the NFC East title and a playoff berth. The loser goes home.

"Never better. I may not be able to run for a while," Coughlin said of his health, adding later that he doesn't discuss injuries.

Still, Coughlin had some fun. When asked about Ware, he joked Ware was no longer with the team.

He blamed himself for not paying attention and taking his eye off the play, even though he admitted the late push that resulted in a penalty came 10 yards out of bounds. He even noted he was in for treatment Sunday, just to check up on his players who were hurt in Saturday's 29-14 win that gave the Giants bragging right over Rex Ryan and the brash Jets, the team that co-owns the stadium where they play.

The man who also led the Giants to a Super Bowl title in 2008 and missed the playoffs the past two seasons added he has no intention of coaching from the press box Sunday night. He will be on the field with his players in this all-or-nothing game.

"This is a long and storied rivalry, no doubt about it," Coughlin said of the Giants-Cowboys series. "There have been some great, great games between the two franchises. The one a couple of weeks ago was an outstanding game and example of that. We prepare ourselves for just that type of high intensity, outstanding, high level of performance on both sides."

The Giants rallied from a 12-point deficit in the final 5:41 to beat the Cowboys in Dallas on Dec. 11. However, Coughlin reminded his team Monday that Dallas beat the Giants in the Meadowlands last season after losing in Texas.

Defensive end Dave Tollefson said Coughlin has been the one person the players can count on in what has been an inconsistent year.

The fourth-quarter injury on Saturday was yet another example.

Player after player was amazed at Coughlin's toughness after taking the hit, which looked nasty. Trainers forced him to go to the bench to be examined, but he fought them all the way and quickly limped back to his coaching position along the sideline.

"You know his actions, obviously, Saturday was a great example to the public," Tollefson said. "He would never ask us to do anything that he himself would (not) be willing to do, though he is twice the age of our youngest guy. Seriously, he means what he says and he says a lot of things that he does say, there is conviction in his voice. So you can really tell he means it."

And that he led to loyalty toward a coach who let his players know where they stand.

"You don't want to let him down because he is willing to do anything he can to not let us down," Tollefson said.

Coughlin's message to the team Monday was simple: Forget about the win over the Jets. If you want to get into the postseason, win on Sunday.

"We are all all-in," said defensive captain Justin Tuck, who seemingly shook off all his injuries and played his best game of the season against the Jets. "Coach Coughlin is the same as all of us. I know that leg is banged up a little bit, but he wasn't showing any ill effects today and came in excited about the opportunity that we have this week."

Outspoken safety Antrel Rolle went home to Miami for Christmas, and texted his coach to see how he was feeling Sunday.

"Some of our toughness definitely rubbed off on him," Rolle quipped before getting serious. "He is a tough guy. He kept it going. If our coach is strong enough to go out there and fight and keep it going and hang through a situation like that, we're younger. Why can't we do it?" That's the mentality I have."

Some of the players could not help but tease Coughlin a little bit. One of the things he always says to them is: no toughness, no championship."

The coach heard that a couple of times after being hurt.

His age also was a target.

"I don't think he has taken a hit like that since World War II," Tollefson said of Coughlin, who was born a year after the hostilities ended. "For him to bounce back is impressive."

He'll tape it up if he has to," added guard Chris Snee, the coach's son-in-law. "It didn't look very good but I guess it could have been a lot worse."

NOTES: Coughlin hopes to have WR Mario Manningham (knee) back for the regular-season finale. ...DE Osi Umenyiora (ankle) is a little more iffy. ... Rolle, CB Corey Webster and DE Jason Pierre-Paul all played over 100 plays against the Jets.

RICHMOND (AP) ? A massive Christmas Eve search for a 2-year-old boy who was in the backseat of an SUV that was stolen following a double-slaying in Richmond ended around midnight with the boy being found safe, police said.

Richmond police said in a Tweet late Saturday: "2-year-old Kaiden Burnside is OK. Found alone inside SUV off Jennie Scher Road. Thanks to everyone for assistance."

City police spokeswoman Karla Peters told the Richmond Times-Dispatch (http://bit.ly/svXlqT ) the child was found sleeping alone in the parked vehicle.

"He's being checked out by EMS and will soon be reunited with his mother," Peters said.

Authorities late Saturday identified the suspect as 27-year-old Jamal Louis Clemons of Richmond, Va. They say Clemons is wanted for abduction, robbery, robbery with a firearm and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony by a convicted felon.

Richmond city police said in a press release that shortly after 5 p.m., officers responded to a report of two persons down and found an adult man and an adult woman inside a Church Hill residence. Both had been fatally shot.

Witnesses reported that a man fled the scene inside a 2012 white GMC Terrain SUV that was left with the motor running and the boy strapped in the back seat, the news release said.

The Virginia State Police issued an Amber Alert at 9:39 p.m. EST Saturday for the boy, identified as Kaiden Gage Burnside. They described him as having short blond hair and blue eyes, and wearing a red plaid shirt, a cream-colored vest with a red truck carrying a Christmas tree, dark green corduroy slacks and white light-up sneakers.

"The child is believed to be in extreme danger," the alert said.

City police described the suspect ? later identified as Clemons ? as a black man in his mid- to late 20s, 5-foot-8 and 150 to 160 pounds, with black hair and wearing dark jeans and a black zip-up sweat shirt with a hood. He is believed to be armed with a revolver.

"We don't believe that he knew there was a child in the back seat," Richmond police Maj. Steve Drew told the newspaper.

Police said they didn't believe the shooting was random but have not released additional details about the victims or their potential relationship to the suspect.

Officers continued to search early Sunday for the suspect.

Richmond police did not return repeated calls from The Associated Press on Saturday evening.

Knicks edge Celtics 106-104 on Anthony foul shots (AP)

NEW YORK ? Carmelo Anthony scored 37 points, including a pair of free throws with the game tied and 16 seconds left, and the New York Knicks survived a seesaw season opener Sunday to beat the Boston Celtics 106-104.

Amare Stoudemire added 21 points and Toney Douglas had 19 for the Knicks, who led by 17 in the first half, trailed by 10 in the fourth quarter, then pulled out a thrilling Christmas victory in the delayed opener to the 2011-12 season.

Rajon Rondo had 31 points and 13 assists, nearly leading the Celtics back without an injured Paul Pierce. But Kevin Garnett missed a jumper just before the buzzer, the kind of shot Boston always seems to make against the Knicks.

Brandon Bass had 20 points and 11 rebounds in his Celtics debut, and Ray Allen added 20 points.

Garnett finished with 15 points. He and Allen had a sleepy Christmas start, with Rondo keeping the Celtics in the game until they got going in the second half.

But it wasn't enough against the Knicks, who withstood a potentially serious knee injury to first-round pick Iman Shumpert to beat the team that swept them out of the first round of last season's playoffs.

Pierce has a bruised right heel but hopes he can return Tuesday when the Celtics visit the Miami Heat.

Even without him, the Celtics fought back to tie it at 69 on Rondo's layup midway through the third quarter. They surged ahead by eight going into the final period after Bass scored the final six points, then extended it to 89-79 on Bass' jumper to open the fourth.

Anthony tied it at 100 on a 3-pointer with 3:25 to play, and it stayed tight until he was fouled on a drive with 16.3 seconds left, making both for a 106-104 lead. Rondo grabbed the rebound of Marquis Daniels' potential go-ahead 3-pointer to give the Celtics a final chance, but Garnett was off on a jumper, then appeared to shove the Knicks' Bill Walker away.

Coming off their first winning season in a decade, the Knicks added a defensive presence by signing Tyson Chandler away from the NBA champion Dallas Mavericks and have loftier expectations than they've seen in years. The original NBA schedule had them opening against Miami, but instead they got a chance to see if they've closed the gap against the team they hope to unseat atop their division.

Celtics coach Doc Rivers even compared the Knicks to the Lakers because of the length along their front line with Chandler in between Stoudemire and Anthony. Though the Celtics won all eight meetings last season, the Knicks have been listed some places as the favorites in the Atlantic Division, which the Celtics have ruled since their Big Three came together in 2007.

"It's possible. Right now, anybody could win the division. Everybody knows how optimism kicks in before the season starts, but then once reality sets in after the first month of the season, we'll see," Pierce said before the game. "But it's definitely a possibility. I mean, they have the talent, but we have the talent, too, So I can see that."

D'Antoni was careful to keep the expectations low, saying the limited amount of practice time before the season started means it could be a few weeks before all the new players are used to each other. The Knicks won't even have one, Baron Davis, for a while as he recovers from a herniated disc in his back.

Shumpert was expected to be a key until then, but he sprained a right knee ligament in the second half.

The Celtics are a changed team as well, with the retirement of Shaquille O'Neal and the season-ending loss of Jeff Green for surgery to repair an aortic aneurysm. And they will face questions about how their veteran core can navigate the tight 66-game schedule.

But the acquisition of Bass from Orlando for Glen Davis paid immediate dividends, as he showed a nice midrange jumper when he wasn't busy keeping balls alive on the glass.

The first game since renovations began at Madison Square Garden included the usual cast of celebrities such as Alicia Keys, Chris Rock and John McEnroe, and some new confusion, as at least one Celtics player had to ask how to get to the court from the new visitors' locker room.

The Knicks led 34-23 after one and extended it to 49-32 with 7 1/2 minutes left in the half on a pair of free throws by Chandler. But the Celtics shot 62 percent in the quarter, getting it back into single digits before New York took a 62-52 lead into halftime.

Notes: Rivers said Pierce may come off the bench when he does return, since he's had only one practice so far. ... The Knicks were without Mike Bibby, who dressed but didn't play because of a sore back. Reserve Jared Jeffries was lost during the game to a sore right calf. ... Stoudemire provided pregame breakfast to MSG staff in appreciation of the support in his first season with the team.

Alan Wake's American Nightmare was born out of the Fight Till Dawn arcade mode (Digital Trends)

alan-wakes-american-nightmare-7

Remedy?s Xbox 360 exclusive Alan Wake was a breath of fresh air for video games when it finally arrived in 2010 after an extended development period. Here was a game that seemed to be putting story ahead of everything else. It was fun to play, with combat built around mechanics involving light and shadow, but the narrative was the real hook, with its serial TV drama-style presentation and episodic arrangement.

Remedy?s recently confirmed early 2012 Xbox Live Arcade release Alan Wake?s American Nightmare ALSO has a story, but it?s one that is best viewed as a spin-off. In fact, the plan for a game technically existed before a story was even in the picture, as I learned during a recent sitdown in New York City with Remedy CEO Matias Myllyrinne and head of franchise development Oskari H?kkinen.

?Alan Wake was a tip of the hat to Alfred Hitchcock, to Stephen King, to Lost, and this has a different feel and a different focus,? H?kkinen told me. ?Some of the influences are pointing more toward Quentin Tarantino, with a Dusk ?Til Dawn-ish grindhouse feel to it. More pulp fiction.?

?So how this came about? after Alan Wake, we were looking at what people liked and it seemed kind of universally agreed that everyone liked the story, the characters, the cinematics and the thriller-esque feeling it. But one thing that a lot of people were saying was that they would?ve liked to have seen a further escalation in the combat, perhaps some different types of weapons and enemies as well. More variation as the story progressed.?

The team used that feedback to create a sort of ???white room sandbox,??

?We put lots of wild stuff in there,? H?kkinen said. ?It just seemed like the perfect fit for Xbox Live Arcade. That?s how it started off.?

From there the idea was pitched over to Remedy creative director Sam Lake, who saw a good opportunity to tell another Wake story. He also acknowledged that the more outrageous sampling of weapons and enemies cooked up for what we now know as Alan Wake?s American Nightmare wouldn?t necessarily fit within the narrative framework established in the 2010 game. That?s where the next piece of the puzzle fell into place, with Night Springs.

The story in American Nightmare puts players in control of Wake as he lives through an episode of the TV series Night Springs, a Twilight Zone-like show in the Wake universe that players got glimpses of in the previous game. ?These kind of weapons and enemies fit in perfectly,? H?kkinen said. ?It?s a little bit lighter and it?s something anyone could jump on board with. But for the fans out there, there?s tons of optional story content as well that connects the dots to the first game and explains why we are here.?

Myllyrinne chimed in at this point. ?I think the other consideration we had was, we felt that the medium needs to be reflected in the content. So when you play an XBLA game? even though we?re challenging a lot of the conventions [with American Nightmare], people want to pick it up and play [an XBLA game] to have fun. I think having something like the [Fight Till Dawn survival] arcade mode makes perfect sense for that medium.?

?When we look at the story mode [in American Nightmare], it?s a more contracted experience compared to a full-on 12 to 15 hour adventure. We wanted to introduce these elements really rapidly and make sure that players can jump in and [just] enjoy them, get right down to the core of the ?fight with light? combat mechanics and also a story that has a meaningful structure to it.?

The big surprise for me in all of this was hearing that American Nightmare, a spinoff of one of the most successfully executed game narratives? well? ever, was actually born out of a relatively simple and straightforward arcade-style survival mode. What?s more, that survival mode itself exists only because of the dev team?s efforts to respond to critical and fan feedback. I mentioned this and got nods of agreement from the Remedy guys.

?We?ve done games before where we started more from a narrative perspective. This time, the broad narrative was done already because we?ve plotted out Wake?s journey, if you will,? Myllyrinne explaied. ?We started very much from a gaming perspective here. I wish I could say we had a grand design, but it was more iterative and just kind of came from the arcade mode.?

?It?s a fun time to try to do things slightly differently and in a more concise period of time and so we just cut loose and had fun and had more liberties than you would have than in, for example, a game like the original Wake, where you have a distinctive and different style that you want to achieve. Here we were able to put the gameplay first.?

?We were having such a blast with the early test levels ourselves and we kind of felt, WE like it, and we?d like to share it out with the world. So we took the ball and ran with it, rang up Microsoft and said, ?Oh, by the way, we have a surprise for you.? They were stoked when we showed it to them. They thought it was something kind of different from what they?ve seen before. We?ve been really excited about their support and they?re excited about the opportunity as well.?

H?kkinen chimed in here. ?We looked at what people really loved about Alan Wake and then had a look at what gamers perhaps really want. So this is really from gamers to gamers.?

alan-wakes-american-nightmare-1

Looking at the history, American Nightmare is really just the latest evolution for a development studio that has tended to push itself in different directions with each new project. Whether it?s Max Payne fusing third-person shooter action with bullet-time and a strong narrative focus or Wake with its ?fight with light? combat and unconventional yet highly effective approach to story pacing. Then there?s Death Rally, the combat-oriented iOS racer played from a top-down perspective that was released earlier this year.

?With Death Rally earlier this year we worked with a smaller developer to get something different out to the iPhone and iPad. We love those kinds of devices and ecosystems like the App Store and XBLA. It?s one of those things where we felt we could just be quicker to respond,? Myllyrinne explained.

?We do read our Facebook sites, we do read our community sites, and a lot of the e-mail and feedback. That?s part of the reason, for example, when Microsoft gave us the freedom to bring Wake to PC, which we?re doing early next year, we ran with it because we were getting a lot of requests for it. Maybe it?s changing in many ways. This used to be an industry where you needed to work really hard to sell your concept to a publisher who would then work really hard to sell it to retail who would then work really hard to sell it to the audience. Whereas now it?s more instantaneous, where you actually have the creative team who?s driving it in direct interaction with the audience.?

Bringing it back to Wake, H?kkinen reassured me that the particular change in direction we?re seeing with American Nightmare isn?t necessarily a signal to fans that the series as a whole is changing along with it. ?It?s an IP that?s very, very important to us. I think we do great things with Alan Wake. This spinoff experience is a little bit different, but there?s merit to it because it?s set in Night Springs,? he said.

H?kkinen then went on to admit that American Nightmare ?does connect some dots? within the larger story, ?so it?s not a complete spin-off.? The Night Springs package is really meant to challenge players with a wider set of enemies and a wider set of tools to attack those enemies with. The thing that Remedy wants fans to remember is that American Nightmare DOES slot into the bigger picture.

?You could argue that, within the fiction, Wake ? because his fiction can become real ? he?s perhaps writing himself out of the Dark Place or attempting to get to his wife,? Myllyrinne said. ?There is a?? He sighs at this point, cutting himself off. ?I don?t want to give away the story.?

H?kkinen came to the rescue here. ?There IS a back story to this. Early on in his career, [Wake] had written several episodes of Night Springs. And now you are playing an episode of Night Springs. And this episode happens to be written by Alan Wake himself.?

?How we spin the yarn and how it comes together is something that we planned ahead and do build on,? Myllyrinne explained. ?For example, Mr. Scratch was alluded to in the [original Alan Wake] DLC, and we alluded to the fact that Wake had written Night Springs a little bit. So we are building these different pieces, and hopefully when they all fall into place people will be able to see where it all came from.?

?Another connection to Bright Falls and what?s happened is Mr. Scratch is an urban legend that?s become real,? H?kkinen added. ?That comes out of Alan Wake going missing, he was in the Dark Place. When [he] went missing, the locals in Bright Falls started talking about this writer/rockstar who came to their town and murdered his wife in a cabin. So that?s where the urban legend was born that is now Mr. Scratch, which is darkness shaped in Alan Wake?s image.?

?We will continue with [the series], but where the future is at with it? if people really love this [arcade] stuff, perhaps it?s in the cards to do a little more with this as well, around Night Springs. But with Alan Wake as well, it?s something people really love and we?re storytellers after all, so it?ll be exciting to tell more of the story.?

In other words, don?t change that channel, folks. More Wake to come. For now, stay tuned for American Nightmare, coming to Xbox Live Arcade early next year.
