For Obama and Romney, Syria is no-win situation

U.N. observers have discovered 13 bound corpses in eastern Syria, many of them apparently shot execution-style, the monitoring mission said Wednesday. The announcement comes days after a massacre in Houla, in the central Homs province, which killed more than 100 people and prompted worldwide condemnation against the regime of President Bashar Assad. (AP) ? Escalating violence in Syria has become the ultimate no-win political situation for President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney: The deepening crisis is impossible for their campaigns to ignore but too complex for them to articulate an easy solution.

Romney has seized on the crackdown in Syria as an opportunity to dent Obama's foreign policy credentials, painting him as weak and indecisive in the face of more than a year of violence. But Romney's vague prescriptions for what he would do differently have opened him to criticism from the Obama campaign that he is weighing in from the sidelines with "nothing but tough talk" while the president does the real work of managing the crisis.

The violence in Syria hasn't captured the full attention of an American electorate consumed by the economy and other domestic issues. But the barbs being traded between the campaigns try to raise questions of leadership for the two men battling for a job filled with unexpected challenges.

Romney zeroes in on what he portrays as a lack of leadership in Obama's handling of Syria's 14-month government crackdown on opponents to the regime. Following a weekend massacre of more than 100 Syrian civilians, including dozens of women and children, Romney said the president's weakness had resulted in a "policy of paralysis."

In turn, the Obama campaign has sought to cast the president as the one bearing the responsibility for actually handling the crisis. While Obama "has demonstrated his ability to work with world leaders to resolve international conflicts," campaign spokesman Ben LaBolt said, Romney has a "rudderless foreign policy agenda."

The heated rhetoric between the rival campaigns belies the fact that there are significant gaps in both candidates' policy positions on Syria and few differences in the specifics they have offered. And that vagueness does little to shed light on how Obama may approach Syria in the coming months and how Romney would behave if elected this fall.

Both Obama and Romney have called for Syrian President Bashar Assad to step down and clear the way for a political transition. Mindful of the war-weary American public, neither candidate supports direct U.S. military engagement in Syria. And both agree on the need to pressure Russia, which holds veto power on the U.N. Security Council, to end its support of Assad's regime, though Romney argues that Obama hasn't been tough enough with Moscow.

Romney, however, has called on the U.S. and its partners to "arm the opposition so they can defend themselves." But he has offered little sense of what he would do if the ensuing battles didn't push Assad from power or, if they did, what type of political transition he would support.

Jon Alterman, director of the Middle East program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, said Romney is unlikely to articulate a fuller vision for Syria before the election because he doesn't want to own the problem before he needs to.

"His instinct is not to define a view," Alterman said. "His instinct is to attack the status quo without really presenting a coherent alternative."

The matter is further complicated for Romney by a lack of consensus within his own party over how to handle the crisis. A handful of hard-line voices in the Republican Party, led by Romney backer and Arizona Sen. John McCain, have called for U.S. airstrikes in Syria similar to the campaign the Obama administration waged successfully with NATO partners in Libya to push Moammar Gadhafi from power. But that effort has gained little traction, with other Republican lawmakers wary of leading the U.S. into another war after a decade in Iraq and Afghanistan.

McCain ramped up his criticism of the Obama administration's handling of the crisis Thursday. During a trip to Malaysia, he said it was "embarrassing that the United States of America refuses to show leadership and come to the aid of the Syrian people."

The White House opposes sending arms to the opposition, saying further militarization in Syria would only lead to more chaos. The administration also says there isn't enough clear information about the makeup of the opposition or assurances that the weapons wouldn't end up in the hands of al-Qaida, Hezbollah or other terrorist organizations.

Instead, the White House is hoping a steady stream of economic sanctions and diplomatic pressure can weaken Assad's grip on power. While administration officials say they are discussing with allies potential next steps for dealing with Syria, the lack of any publicly defined specific options under consideration has opened the president up to criticism.

"At some point you need to come up with a policy to make Assad step down or acknowledge that you're not going to do it," said Michael Rubin, a former Pentagon official and scholar at the conservative American Enterprise Institute.

For Obama, military engagement with Syria may not be feasible from either a policy and political perspective. Syria, unlike Libya, has greater defense capabilities, and administration officials doubt a bombing campaign could be accomplished quickly and relatively bloodlessly. Engaging U.S. forces in Syria would also run counter to Obama's foreign policy campaign narrative, which is built on being the president who ends wars, with the Iraq conflict coming to a close under his watch and the Afghanistan campaign winding down.

The violence in Syria has spiraled out of control as the uprising against Assad that began in March 2011 has morphed into an armed insurgency. An estimated 13,000 people have died so far.

HBT: 'My wife has been getting hate mail,' Brewer says

Jonathan Lucroy will undergo surgery tomorrow to insert a pin into his fractured right hand, but Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports that the operation won?t change the catcher?s expected recovery timetable of 4-6 weeks.

Lucroy also revealed during a radio interview with 1250-WSSP that his wife ?has been getting hate mail on her Facebook? page after fans learned that the injury came when a suitcase she was moving fell on his hand.

Lucroy pleaded with fans to stop harassing his wife:

It?s really sad that these kinds of things happen from a freak thing. I mean, she didn?t do it on purpose. It was an accident. Stranger things have happened. It?s been a battle for me, personally, because there?s no one to blame, and my wife is getting killed by this. It?s not like she?s not hurt enough already, not feeling guilty enough already. I really wish people would just leave her alone, leave us alone, just let us try to move forward, and get this behind us, because this has been a brutal couple of days.

People: Still the worst.

Dare To Dream/Twin-Flame Relationships - Angel Healing House

I was speaking to a client this week, who was experiencing a dishonoring, and compromised relationship. I shared with her that it was only when I fully embraced that I was worthy to have a cherished love of my own, that my wish could have been answered by God and the angels. Having met my husband Pete, she said to me, ?He is so wonderful, you are just one of the lucky ones.? I told her that it had nothing to do with luck and everything to do with the conviction and belief in my dreams.
This made me think back to a Decree that I wrote to God in 2003 after extricating myself from a 22 year abusive marriage and then a four year deceitful, destructive relationship. For those who may not know, a Decree is a sacred pact that you make with God. It is much more binding than goal setting; as you vow with God, as your partner and witness, to hold tight to your statements. The first thing that I wrote was, ?Thank you God for my Twin-Flame Relationship and marriage.? I knew that my two past abusive relationships had been soul mate relationships and along with love, they had brought great Karmic contrast, drama, and irritation. In this way they pushed my buttons and challenged me to grow. I also knew that once I transcended all the Karma, I would have the ability to attract my Twin-Flame Relationship; who is the divine completion of who I am. After writing this first statement, I paused for a moment, thinking about how extraordinary it would feel to be reunited with my Twin-Flame. Just then, the pen wrote, ?I live in a comfortable home near the ocean.? I do not know where this statement came from; as I certainly had never done automatic writing before and did not have the finances to own a beach home. The pen and I went on to write exactly what I dreamed for this beautiful relationship. I wrote, ?
?My husband is loyal, kind, gentle, responsible and trustworthy. He makes me a priority. He has a great sense of humor and loves to make me laugh. He is affectionate in public. We work together, love traveling the world and we are supportive of one another.? Because this is a Twin-Flame Relationship, both parties would mirror and reflect these same attributes to one another. (To find out more about Twin-Flame Relationships which is your Divine complement in any space, time and dimension-book a seat at the Twin-Flame Relationship Workshop in Santa Barbara on July 14th; see details below.) When I had finished writing, the pen wrote on its own, ?I have a wonderful healing practice and my clients and students love me and I love them.? I looked at this last statement with great curiosity for I had never entertained the thought of studying alternative forms of healing. After I finished writing this Decree, I felt that this was a very significant document and that I would show it the importance that it deserved. I slept with it under my pillow, and read it out every morning and night. While I read it out, I visualized and felt in my heart what it would feel like to be with my Twin-Flame. I then honored and respected myself physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually to raise my energies and prepare myself to be with my beloved cherished husband. The following week after writing this Decree, I reconnected with a friend of mine who was a nurse. Unbeknownst to me, she was also a clairvoyant and a Reiki Master/Teacher. When we ?synchronistically? bumped into each other again, she looked at me with a knowing glance and said, ?You were not ready before, but now you are spiritually ready to study Reiki. I have been sent to be your teacher.?
I studied and completed my Master/Teacher Degree in two disciplines of Reiki and opened my business Angel Healing House 3 months after writing my Decree. 6 months after writing my Decree, on September 20th, I was randomly invited to a ?come as your favorite rock star party?. I went as Stevie Nicks from Fleetwood Mac. At the stroke of 7 o?clock the only Elvis at the party, my future husband Pete, walked in and 5 hours later we were still talking. Two days after we met, he drove me to his beach home on the Sunshine Coast and 3 days later he asked to marry me. Actually, he wanted to ask to marry me after 3 days, but he thought he would wait until 5 days. (There are so many more magical synchronicities attached to our meeting and I will recount the miraculous story in full at the Twin-Flame Relationship workshop on July 14th.)
When I look over the grand adventure that Pete and I have been on ever since we met, we have known deep in our hearts that we are under the countenance, protection and guidance of God. Knowing that we could have whatever we wanted, we realized that the only way that our dreams could manifest for us, was by having a greater vision for our lives.
Your greater vision starts with dreaming. Do you secretly have a huge dream inside of you? Perhaps you dream of a wonderful career in which you are recognized and financially remunerated working with like minded people? Do you wish a cherished, love relationship for yourself? Do you treat your dream like a new seedling, which needs extra care and attention to grow healthy and strong? Or do you let your dreams wither and languish as they go unattended, both hungry and thirsty?
When we left Australia to come live in the States in 2008, Pete dreamed about working in the film industry. Knowing no-one in the film industry and with no job to go to, he took the burning desire in his heart and proceeded to ask God for signs for him to follow to realize his dream. After four years of hard work, diligence, determination, networking and focus to his dream, his journey has taken him to now working on his 3rdseason of the hit show ?The Voice? in the credited position of Transportation Coordinator. This is not luck. This is setting focused attention in one?s heart and faithfully following the signs that God presents him.
It is only by having dreams and having faith in them, that dreams ever come true.
Remember prayer does not make faith work, faith makes prayer work. I have seen it over and over again in my 10 years as a Healing Practitioner that the majority of people who have physical and emotional illnesses, either do not nourish their dreams or have totally forgotten them.
In fact, I believe that dreams are the enchantment that creates magic in our lives.
So knowing this, what kind of life do you want to create? If you want a big outrageous life, then dream big. Remember dreams are aching to come true and waiting for someone to dream them into reality.
Over and over again in our amazing marriage of the last 8 years, both Pete and I have seen the direct results of feeding, nurturing, believing and having faith that our dreams would manifest.
Our secret is that every time God and angels have presented us with the next sign to making more of our dreams a reality, we have faithfully stepped forward; and miracles have occurred. Dreams no longer seem like a feat of magic to us; as we know all that we have to do is have the conviction and the belief in our hearts, and let God and the angels worry about the details as to how and when they will manifest.
Every day when we look into each other?s eyes, Pete and I know that dreams really do come true.
If you have forgotten had to dream and need a refresher course, call me: 831 277 3716.

Daily Dose of Decadence: Writing While Gaming

Daily Dose of Decadence: Writing While Gaming

Writing While Gaming

By Alanna Blackett

Well, maybe not while gaming. More like inspired by gaming. Regardless, this post is going to be about video games. I rediscovered video games when I was 24 and had evacuated to Boston from New Orleans for Hurricane Katrina. I was in a tiny sublet with no furniture and not a whole lot to do. My boyfriend (now husband) bought Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. I?d played some computer games when I was a kid, but I?d never played a roleplaying game. So I make my character, and I?m running around the spaceship, which is the opening scene. Running into walls, of course, because I?m not used to navigating with the keys. And I keep saying over my shoulder, ?The ship is crashing! Oh no! Oh! This cute guy is flirting with me, what do I say? OH MY GOD I CAN FLIRT BACK! Sweetie, look! I?m flirting! And I got a new gun! And met a robot! It?s like I?m in Star Wars. This is the best thing ever!? I played for six hours straight and then got up at 6 AM the next morning so I could beat him to the computer and play more. And a monster was created. The great thing about roleplaying games is they drop you into a world full of story, and you have choices about who you?re going to be and how you?re going to play. There are a lot of stereotypes out there about video games, but some of them really do have amazing writing. The best ones have fully realized worlds. For example, every time I play a Mass Effect game, I?m awestruck by the pages and pages of history the game developers have written about their galaxy. You can read about the backstory of the different planets and species, and it?s all extremely interesting. It gets me inspired, since I mostly write science fiction. A good sci fi game will always get me in the writing mood by sparking these cool ideas about setting and characters. In fact, last month I was having the worst time because one of my writing projects is a historical romance, but every time I played Mass Effect 3 it kept making me want to cheat on it with sci fi. In my cyberpunk romance novella, Unsecure Connection, there is actually a gaming scene. I didn?t plan on it?it just sort of popped into my head and I ran with it. My main characters, Riley and CJ are just getting to know each other, and she tells him to follow her to what he thinks is another location in ?interspace? (which is kind of a virtual-reality version of the internet in my book). And surprise! He?s on a street with a giant robot shooting at him because it turns out she?s dropped him into a game she plays. Which I thought was a nice little play on gender stereotypes because Riley, the female character, is the one who is a gamer, and CJ doesn?t even know how to play. I got a huge kick out of writing the lingo of the game. But really, I have to admit I?m kind of jealous. If I had access to virtual reality games like Riley, I?m pretty sure I?d be running around with a big gun shooting robots too. And then I?d never get anything done.?

Lisa Allender Writes

So the past few posts have been a bit, uh, depressing in tone....so, here's what I've been up to, and hopefully, this will be seen as what it IS: an attempt to jump back into
life, head-first.A diving-into, as it were...
Wednesday, I attended a truly boffo reading at Bound To Be Read Books, which I chronicled here, and on Facebook. Editors of that Anthology, "A Face To Meet The Faces", a collection of persona poetry, are Stacey Lynn Brown and Oliver de la Paz. I was shored-up that night, and later, at the ironically-cheerful dinner and swing-dance club, named "The Graveyard" in East Atlanta Village, I felt even better. We chose no cocktails for us, just iced tea and good grub, thank you. And great company. Thursday turned into an all-afternoon-into-evening-photo-shoot with eternal friend, Coral McGhee, who needed new shots to submit for a new film being lensed in Atlanta. Long-time dear friend, (Videographer/filmmaker/director) Alan Wright supplied the photography skills, I held the reflector, and Coral? Well, she had to look gorgeous. Which happens to be incredibly easy for her, because she IS. The pics turned out great...I learned just tonight via her Facebook announcement, that she has been selected for a small role in the aforementioned "new film"!!!Yaaaay!!! On Friday, I met up with the delightful Crystal Rast, a poet and novelist I seldom get to see. Because besides being a poet/novelist, she's also a writer of "white papers" (that's corporate-speak for writing papers for business execs), and she's also a professor, a graduate student working on her Master's in Creative Writing, and,in her most important role...she's also Tristan's mom. We met at Bahama Breeze, the 'burbs answer to a staycation: the setting is tropical, and the drinks are strong. After a few "Pineapple-Coconut Martinis" (that was this past Friday's designated Happy Hour Drink of the Day)you might begin to believe you're actually IN the islands...We were there several hours, enjoying a few appetizers (please note: the appetizers are HALF-PRICE every WEEKDAY from 4:00-6:00 PM) and more than a few drinks.(her:Pinot Grigio me:the aforementioned Rum cocktails) After hours of noshing on flatbreads with salsa and goat-cheese, coconut shrimp, and crab-stacks (the very best of the various appetizers)and downing drinks, we headed for the corner Starbucks, where we drank strong coffee, and wrote. Here's to writing. Peace, kids.

UNO Comes to Kindle E-Readers | eBook Readers and Kindles

May 27, 2012

UNO Comes to Kindle E ReadersFor more than 40 years the family card-game UNO has captivated friends and family members around the world with its fast and fun action, rule variations, and portability. It's an undisputed classic game for all ages that never grows old and consistently inspires big smiles and bursts of raucous laughter.

Now, UNO has been faithfully reproduced for play on Kindle, Kindle Touch, Kindle Keyboard, Kindle DX, and second generation Kindle devices.

Instead of the game's traditional card colors of red, blue, yellow, and green, UNO for Kindle features four easy-to-see patterns customized exclusively for the Kindle e-ink displays. In addition to the four different patterns, UNO for Kindle cards are numbered from 0 to 9, just like in the original card version of the game.

For the uninitiated, play begins when you place a card from your hand into the discard pile to match either the color or the number laid down on the pile by the previous player. The first person to get rid of all their cards is the winner.

UNO Comes to Kindle E ReadersA selection of special cards keeps the game play fresh and adds an element of surprise; whenever a Wild, Reverse, Skip, Draw Two, or the dreaded Draw Four Wild card is laid down, fortunes quickly turn! Just as someone thinks they're about to win the game, the momentum can suddenly swing against them. Another hallmark rule twist is the need to call out "Uno!" when you're down to one card. If not, you'll be forced to draw two cards.

UNO for Kindle lets you pick up and play a round right from your Kindle's main menu with the choice of either "Quick Play" or "Tournament Mode." Once selected, UNO for Kindle gives you the choice of nine different varieties of the game, including 7-0 (if a zero card is played, all players give their cards to the next player) and Jump-in (if you have a card with the same number and pattern in your hand as on the discard pile, you can play it at any time).

With smooth game play, sharp graphics, easy-to-learn rules, and loads of in-game achievements, playing UNO for Kindle continues the game's tradition of fast fun for everyone.

Mob's protest party outside Clegg house - The Sun

Almost 400 activists gathered at the property in Putney, South West London.

Lib Dem leader Mr Clegg was not at his family home as the rally ? organised by UK Uncut ? featured street music, comedy acts and speeches.

One of the group?s supporters, Jean Sandler, 42, said: ?Nick Clegg is one of the architects of austerity ? he?s a millionaire.

?The cuts are a political choice of this Government and the Cabinet of out-of-touch millionaires.?

About 40 protesters also targeted Mr Clegg?s Sheffield constituency office, serving cake and hanging bunting. Last night MPs spoke out in support of Mr Clegg.

FIFA Football | ?23.95 | The Hut / Zavvi | Vita

The Vita?s first footballing effort has managed to retain its price rather well, so this deal from Zavvi and The Hut is a welcome one. The reduction means there is a saving of just over ?3 currently available.

Despite lacking some features from the latest home console instalments, FIFA Football demonstrated that a fully-fledged version of the franchise is possible on the Vita. Precision shooting with the rear track pad is incredibly useful once you get used to it, although flailing fingers may make you scream as you unintentionally shoot from the halfway line. Complete Your Home Improvement Project With These Tips ...

For a professional finish when painting furniture or other items, consider using spray paint instead of painting with a brush. You can better control the application of the paint, and when the furniture dries, it will not have any brush marks. Modern spray paint comes in a huge range of finishing textures and colors, so you can find paint to complete almost any project.

Not every home improvement project has to be a major overhaul or a major expense; there are a number of quick and easy updates you can make at a reasonable cost to add value and appeal to your home. Start with paint. Paint your walls, your cabinets, your trim or your doors. You can even paint your stove or floor tiles with specialty paint designed for that purpose. Increase storage space by installing closet or pantry organizers. Replace boring kitchen cabinet knobs with ones that are unique and decorative. While you?re at it, do the same with your plain white wall plates. Enhance your new paint job with fresh, bright curtains and sheers. Rent a floor buffer, and buff and wax your hardwood floors. A little cash and a dash of creativity can result in some dramatic changes.

Consider a room addition as a major home improvement. Not only will you add space to your home, but you will significantly increase the square footage and value. The most profitable addition to your home is an additional bathroom, but while adding the bathroom add an additional bedroom to increase the value of your home.

When it comes to home improvement, think twice about decorating the walls of your house in anything extreme such as a wild color or print. A potential buyer may get a bad impression by seeing a house decorated in a way that is distasteful to them. They may choose to look elsewhere, if they do not want to put in the work to redecorate.

Home improvement should always start with the plumbing and the bathrooms. Bathrooms are a key room in a household and will make a house feel like brand new. It?s also one of the most profitable improvements to do to a house if a person ever decides to sell it.

An inexpensive way to improve your home with a small cost is to plant a tree. Future landscaping will help maximize the value of your home. The tree you plan now will grow into a great mature shade feature. A properly placed tree can also save on your cooling costs by as much as 40 percent.

If the purpose of your home improvement project is to help sell the house, you should keep in mind that simple cosmetic changes are often more effective than installing new complex systems. For example, while a floor heating system might be a very cool feature, a simple paint job is more effective. A paint job makes the house look fresh and attractive to all potential buyers, whereas a floor heating system is just a neat add-on and not a selling point.

There are few tasks more satisfying than improving your home. Each improvement brightens your day or makes everyday life easier. You will be proud when friends or relatives visit and notice what you have done. So why not find a little time to carry out one or two of the suggestions that you?ve just read about? You?ll be glad that you did.

a new opinion in Computer about Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 WiFi

While researching tablets I found many reviews were biased towards Android or Apple products. I'm no fangirl and in the past have purchased both and so in this review I'll simply discuss the benefits and disadvantages of choosing the Samsung 10.1 and hopefully will provide some insight into whether this product is right for you.

One of the most noticeable advantages of an android product is the freedom to customize everything from your menu to setup. A typical homepage looks familiarly like a windows desktop homepage. It was incredibly simple to customize my tablet. Instead of a stock standard apple menu I display photographs, thumbnails of websites, the current temperature and the time.

In much the same way it's easy to install updates and upgrade software on this device. Perhaps this device will have better longevity than the iPad which quickly becomes superceded by the next model. My friend brought an iPad for Christmas and was horrified that it is already outdated. However one downside I experienced initially was that the android market (now Google play) had less applications than the apple store. Thankfully in the last few months more companies have begun to create for android and this is less of an issue now.

Another advantage of choosing this device is that you have the options of having little unobtrusive notifications alert you without exciting the website you're viewing or game you're playing. If you're a Gmail user you can also sync your Gmail account with your tablet which I highly recommend. The layout of Gmail on a tablet is superior to the normal layout and I find it's much easier to see the list of incoming emails while composing an email for example.

I also appreciate that this device allows adobe flash (particularly video clips and games) to be shown immediately without any hassle. I also feel that the screen dimensions on this device are better suited to browsing the web or watching a movie than on an iPad.

This device is perfect for my needs. It has built in productivity software such as Excel, Word ect.. which makes viewing assignments I typed up on my desktop a breeze. If your desktop or laptop runs Microsoft I would highly recommend this tablet. Browsing the web is a better experience than on my desktop or laptop as you can double tap on an article or image to enlarge it and move the page left to right ect..

As for the technical specs this tablet is incredibly light (one of the lightest on the market). I've lugged it around all day in a handbag without a second thought. The resolution and images are crisp and bright and I'd argue on par with the iPad. The battery life is decent. I charge mine at night although I find a 30min charge during the day quickly restores the battery. The tablet has both a front and rear camera from which I've been able to take decent photographs and video clips. The processing power is phenomenal and gives users a smooth experience. The system never lags or freezes and downloads are quick.

Strange but perhaps one of the biggest disadvantages is that it's harder to find accessories and attachments for this device while every shop offers a large variety of apple add ons. I had to order and wait a few weeks for my Belkin case to arrive.

I suppose at the end of the day I'd recommend the iPad to Mac users and the Samsung 10.1 to Microsoft users. All in all I'm ecstatic with my tablet and still use it everyday. Three of my family members have also brought one of their own. At first I admit I was tempted to purchase an iPad for the "cool" factor but I don't regret my decision.

P.S Look out for Samsung's special cashback offer that seems to appear every few months. I received a $100 check back.

Interactive internet is a recent thing; the online world was not as complex as it is today. Most pages were plain text and simply boring while multimedia was still in the nascent stage. But over two decades, the world-wide-web slowly and steadily became more and more advanced and complex. More than 90 percent of the sites now boast of 2D and 3D images today with impeccable audio and video. Animation is ruling the movie world while it has also found space in the corporate market when companies opt for branding in a big way. Web pages are now interactive and interesting and popularly known as rich internet applications (RIAs). Microsoft Silverlight platform can help in RIA development to a great extent. One can create complex and user-friendly websites with the help of Silverlight technology. With the sudden demand in Silverlight applications, many offshore technology providers have broadened their offerings. Silverlight, which was launched four years back, has grown handsomely in the space of 5 releases which has worked wonders in its existing features and presents a fascinating picture of the web. Silverlight is now popular in diverse platforms including mobile, desktop and web. .NET technology is widely used for creating Silverlight applications. XML is used as a markup language and traditional languages have greatly reduced the learning curve too. Silverlight is extremely popular for delivering business applications too since the platform is compatible with nearly all browsers including Internet Explorer, Apple's Safari, Mozilla Firefox and Aurora at the client side network. Silverlight's cross-browser compatibility has earned it praise and high demand. The real data is stored at the server and hence the performance of the application is comparatively higher than other applications. Silverlight also works well with nearly all operating systems and is an ideal cross-platform technology. Expert Silverlight developers are known to create varied applications including web-based apps to huge video games. Most companies even resort to Silverlight for creating audio stream applications. Dynamic code can be saved in separate files which is accessible from anywhere during the development of rich internet applications. Twitter is developed using Silverlight and its architecture has allowed several developers to work on multiple projects simultaneously for quick processing. Silverlight heightens the attraction of applications as well makes them interactive and quick in execution which is really helpful for better sales in some domains. Silverlight 5 which is the latest entrant in the Microsoft family is advanced than Adobe Flash in a variety of its features. One can isolate web development and web design for creating extremely effective web designs. Websites can now handle more and more data while the internet speeds have reached megabytes to per second. The mobile application development market has boosted Silverlight development too and internet accessibility has reached the smartphones at an alarming rate. Silverlight has reached various avenues and every platform which helps users to read news, play online games, or even find specific locations are based on Silverlight. The need of the hour is to opt for more innovative Silverlight applications to promote services in the corporate world, as business apps are becoming famous day by day.

Pets, TV and Chocolate: Potential Sleep Scuttlers ? Tucson Medical ...

Photo courtesy of N.C. Industrial Commission

You simply are not going to be able to reverse lost sleep by trying to cram it in on the weekends.

?It takes the average person three days to rebound from one night of sleep deprivation,? explained David Sholes, manager of Neurodiagnostics at Tucson Medical Center,?which oversees the Sleep Laboratory.

Memorial Day weekend aside, he said, ?There are not three days in a weekend, so you?re never going to recover at that rate. You?re better off just keeping a reasonable schedule so your sleep is more consistent.?

With May designated ?Better Sleep Month,? Sholes shared some tips on how to get the restorative Zzzzzz?s you need.

Sholes said the brain is built on a circadian rhythm ? think of it as your internal body clock. By keeping a regular routine, it knows what time to go to sleep and what time to wake up, and is more likely to transition through the necessary four stages of sleep without interruption. Furthermore, obtaining adequate levels of each stage of sleep is important for restorative sleep.?

Other tips include avoiding alcohol and caffeine, including choclate,?within five hours of bedtime. Avoid going to bed on an empty stomach and finish exercising at least three hours before bedtime.

A cooler room often improves sleep. And if you can?t fall asleep after 15 to 20 minutes, get up and do some other relaxing activity instead of stewing over your inability to sleep.

Sholes said among his least popular tips: Make sure that your television stays off during sleep time. At the very least, he suggested, set the sleep timer so that it turns off within 20 minutes instead of letting it stay on the entire night. Televisions have fluctuating volumes and lighting, which can cause microarousals without the patient completely waking up. This can make it difficult for patients to transition to deeper stages of sleep or get back to sleep all together.

Also, don?t think sharing the bedroom with your pet will?necessarily help with quality sleep. Although many are convinced their pets bring them comfort, Sholes said if the animal is moving around every few hours, it could interrupt the cycle of sleep stages and may do more harm than good.

Sholes suggests keeping a sleep diary for two weeks with the pet, then starting a new diary cycle without the pet to see if any difference is evident. By noting your energy level and the way you feel at wake time and half way through the next day, it will soon become apparent if the pet is significantly disturbing your sleep, he said.

As anyone pulling an all-nighter can attest, bad sleep can impede on quality of life. ?It can cause an inability to stay awake during the day, which decreases productivity and can interfere with the lifestyle you want to live. Maybe your friends are going on a hike, but you?re just too tired. Maybe you have some personal goals you want to accomplish, but you can?t seem to motivate yourself,? Sholes said.

Sleep disorders, such as sleep apnea, can also have significant health impacts, he said, from high blood pressure to diabetes and heart problems.

Tucson Medical Center offers a diagnostic sleep lab with spacious, overnight accommodations to help patients get to the root of their sleeping problems.

Sholes said people tend to diminish the importance of sleep. ?It?s entirely under-rated. People think it?s more of an inconvenience than a true health concern, which is alarming,? he said. ?Here at TMC, we are trying to educate the community that it can really put your health at risk and prevent you from getting out of life all that you want to get out of it.?
