In Partnership With Microsoft, RIM Launches BlackBerry Business ...

Microsoft and BlackBerry maker Research in Motion (RIM) are teaming up today on the public release of BlackBerry Business Cloud Services for Microsoft Office 365,?a name which surely Microsoft itself had a hand in creating. The new service will allow corporate customers to manage their deployed BlackBerry devices using Exchange Online, the hosted version of Microsoft?s messaging platform.

The addition comes at no extra cost to current subscribers of the Office 365 suite or the standalone Exchange Online offering, and supports any BlackBerry devices, whether on a business or consumer data plan.

Once enabled, the managed BlackBerry smartphones will be able to sync with Microsoft Exchange Online email, calendar and organizer data. BlackBerry Balance, a new technology that helps admins manage the corporate data on the device, while leaving personal data untouched, will also be available with this new offering. I.T. will be able to manage the phones using a web-based console, but employees will have access to self-service tools for password and device resets, remote lock and remote wipe functions.

BlackBerry Business Cloud Services is live now in 50 countries. More info is here.

Partnerships like this are one of the reasons why some mobile industry insiders believe that RIM could be a viable acquisition target for Microsoft. The companies are already working so closely together to integrate their technologies, and both share a similar end user customer base: the enterprise market. Reports that RIM has even engaged in takeover talks with Microsoft emerged in December, but nothing has yet to come of that. Instead, the company?s recent moves like the co-CEO step-down and (misguided) statements from new CEO Thorsten Heins (?I don?t think any drastic change is needed?) imply that company is attempting a turnaround, not putting itself on the auction block. At least for now.

(AP) ? Mitt Romney isn't taking any chances.

A day before voting begins in Florida's Republican primary, Romney is running?ahead of rival Newt Gingrich in polls.?The former Massachusetts governor earned positive reviews during two debates. And Romney has put the former House speaker on the defensive over ethics and Freddie Mac.?

"It's only when he can mass money to focus on carpet-bombing with negative ads that he gains any traction at all," Gingrich is complaining.?

But instead of stepping back and refocusing on President Barack Obama ? as he?did in Iowa when it became clear that Gingrich had lost?? Romney?is ratcheting up his rhetoric and continuing his attacks until the very end. He hopes to close the Florida campaign strongly to push Gingrich as far back as possible.

?"His record is one of failed leadership," Romney said of Gingrich?Sunday night?at a rally in Pompano Beach, in South Florida. And Romney challenged Gingrich to "look in the mirror" to figure out why the former House speaker has fallen back in Florida.

"His record is one of failed leadership. We don't need someone who can speak well perhaps or can say things we agree with, but does not have the experience of being an effective leader," he said.

Aides say Romney's attacks are partially a response to increasingly angry rhetoric from Gingrich, who on Sunday called the former Massachusetts governor "somebody who is a pro-abortion, pro-gun-control, pro-tax-increase liberal."?Gingrich also accused Romney of lying. "I don't know how you debate a person with civility if they're prepared to say things that are just plain factually false," Gingrich said.

Romney's campaign on Sunday fired back immediately, starting with the candidate and continuing?with statements from top surrogates who cast Gingrich's assault as an unfair attack on Romney's character.

"Mitt Romney is man of impeccable character," said New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie. "It offends me that Newt Gingrich would attack the character of Mitt Romney."

Former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty called the attacks "over the line."

Romney's supporters particularly defended his anti-abortion credentials following Gingrich's attack. Gingrich allies are also running radio ads attacking Romney's record on the issue.

Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi called Romney a "champion for pro-life values" as she introduced him at the rally.?Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen offered a similar defense during an earlier rally with the Cuban American community in Hialeah.

In what has become a wildly unpredictable race, the momentum has swung back to Romney, who just last weekend was staggered by Gingrich's victory in South Carolina. Romney has begun advertising in Nevada ahead of that state's caucuses next Saturday, illustrating the challenges ahead for Gingrich, who has pledged to push ahead no matter what happens in Florida.

An NBC News/Marist poll published Sunday showed Romney with support from 42 percent of likely Florida primary voters, compared with 27 percent for Gingrich.

To hang onto his lead,?Romney continued to paint Gingrich as part of the very Washington establishment he condemns and someone who had a role in the nation's economic problems.

"Your problem in Florida is that you worked for Freddie Mac at a time when Freddie Mac was not doing the right thing for the American people, and that you're selling influence in Washington at a time when we need people who will stand up for the truth in Washington," Romney told an audience in Naples.

Gingrich's consulting firm was paid more than $1.5 million by the federally-backed mortgage company over a period after he left Congress in 1999.

Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, trailing in Florida by a wide margin, skipped campaigning to be with his 3-year-old daughter, Bella, who was hospitalized. He planned to campaign in Missouri and Minnesota early this week.

Texas Rep. Ron Paul, who has invested little in Florida, looked ahead to Nevada. The libertarian-leaning Paul is focusing more on gathering delegates in caucus states, where it's less expensive to campaign. But securing the nomination only through caucus states is a hard task.

The intense effort by Romney to slow Gingrich is comparable to his strategy against Gingrich in the closing month before Iowa's leadoff caucuses Jan. 3. Gingrich led in Iowa polls, lifted by what were hailed as strong performances in televised debates. But his support dropped in the face of withering attacks by Romney, aided immensely by ads sponsored by a "super" political action committee run by former Romney aides.

But Romney aides say they made the mistake of assuming Gingrich could not rise again as he did in South Carolina. Romney appears determined not to let that happen again.

Romney has three events scheduled across the state Monday. He planned events in Jacksonville and the Tampa area. Gingrich has five planned events.?

Plummer, Spencer win early SAG film awards (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? Hollywood's actors began picking the best performances of 2011's movies when the curtain came up on the annual Screen Actors Guild Awards on Sunday with Christopher Plummer taking home the first film honor for supporting actor.

Plummer, 82, who plays an elderly man who comes out of the closet as a gay man much to the chagrin of his family, thanked his fellow actors from the stage, calling them a wacky but wonderful bunch of artists.

"I just can't tell you what fun I've had being a member of the world's second oldest profession," Plummer joked on stage. "When they honor you, it's like being lit by the holy grail. Thank you, thank you, thank you."

The second film award went to Octavia Spencer for supporting actress in a movie, "The Help," that proved to be a surprise over Berenice Bejo of silent film romance, "The Artist."

Many of Hollywood's biggest film stars including George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie and Michelle Williams turned out on the red carpet, as did TV's Julianna Margulies, Lea Michelle and other TV actresses and actors.

As with previous Hollywood honors programs, many of the women showed off low-cut or strapless gowns. Some wore vintage or sequined dresses. Colors -- violets, reds and teals -- proved popular. The men wore tuxedos or stylish suits with bow ties.

The SAG honors are closely watched in the race for Oscars, and this year they followed Golden Globe, Critics' Choice and other awards from media watchers, as well as acknowledgements from U.S. producer and director guilds that represent their respective professional groups in industry matters.

Because actors make up the biggest branch of voters at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which gives out the Oscars, the SAG awards are closely watched. And coming on the heels of so many other programs, this year's SAG winners could help solidify frontrunner status of silent movie "The Artist" or possibly turn the voting tide in favor of other hopefuls.

TOP CATEGORIES TO COME

Awards in top film categories will be given out later, and "The Artist," a romantic tale of a fading actor in the slumping silent movie era whose career is eclipsed by the woman he loves, aims to do well with actors in two more groups, ensemble cast and lead actor.

But it faces stiff competition from civil rights-era drama "The Help," which has four nominations, more than any movie, as well as from George Clooney-starring "The Descendants".

The actors in all three of those movies, along with the performers in Woody Allen's "Midnight in Paris" and the ladies of comedy "Bridesmaids," will compete for the night's top honor, best ensemble cast in a film.

In other SAG races, Clooney, playing a father struggling to keep his family together, squares off against Jean Dujardin of "Artist" fame and Brad Pitt for his role as a numbers-crunching baseball executive in "Moneyball." The other two nominees in that category are Demian Bichir in the little seen "A Better Life" and Leonardo DiCaprio for "J. Edgar."

The SAG race for best actress is seen as a tight one among Meryl Streep playing former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in "The Iron Lady," Viola Davis as a maid in "The Help" and Michelle Williams for her turn as Marilyn Monroe in "My Week with Marilyn."

Rounding out that category are Glenn Close in a gender-bending role as a butler in "Albert Nobbs" and Tilda Swinton as a troubled mother in dark drama, "We Need to Talk about Kevin."

SAG also hands out awards for performances in TV dramas, comedies and mini-series. But because of SAG's importance in the Oscar race, the film categories are most closely followed.

The Oscars will be given out on February 26 in Hollywood.

"The Artist" director Michel Hazanavicius wins DGA award (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? "The Artist" director Michel Hazanavicius was named the year's best feature film director by the Directors Guild of America on Saturday, further positioning the silent movie-era romance as a frontrunner for Oscars.

The movie about a fading star whose career is eclipsed by the woman he loves just as talkies are putting an end to silent pictures has been a critical darling throughout the Hollywood's current awards season.

"This is really touching and moving for me," said French director Hazanavicius upon accepting his award at the Grand Ballroom adjacent to the Kodak Theatre where the Oscars, the film industry's highest honors, will be given out on February 26.

"It's maybe the highest recognition I could hope for," he said.

The DGA Awards are a key indicator of who may win Academy Awards next month because only six times since the DGA began handing out annual honors in 1948 has the its winner failed to also be named best director by Oscar voters.

More important, there is a long history among members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which gives out the Oscars, to give their Academy Award for best film to the movie made by the winner of best director.

The next stop in the race for Oscars is Sunday's Screen Actors Guild awards in Los Angeles where "The Artist" will look to extend its streak of victories, including a Golden Globe for best film musical or comedy and honors from critics groups.

The DGA also gives out other awards, including one for best film documentary, which went to James Marsh for "Project Nim."

Among TV award winners, Patty Jenkins was given the DGA trophy for best drama series for the pilot episode of "The Killing" and Robert B. Weide took home the DGA award for best comedy series for an episode of "Curb Your Enthusiasm."

Moon cozies up to Jupiter in night sky Sunday

For the second time this month, the moon is going to pay a visit to Jupiter, the largest planet in our solar system.

On Sunday and Monday evenings, a fat, waxing crescent moon will appear to slide past the planet Jupiter. Of course, the moon is much closer to Earth than Jupiter and as such, can change its position against the background stars rather quickly.

In fact, relative to the background stars, the moon will appear to move east at roughly its own apparent width each hour ? or about 12 degrees (on average) over a span of 24 hours. The sky map of Jupiter and the moon with this story shows how they will appear together at about 9 p.m. local time to observers in mid-northern latitudes.

    3. Where in the cosmos? All over the place!
    4. Bus-sized asteroid buzzes Earth ... harmlessly

On Sunday evening, look for Jupiter hovering about 7 degrees to the upper left of the moon; on Monday evening, however, you'll note that the moon will be a similar distance from Jupiter, but will have shifted almost directly above it. As a benchmark, 10 degrees could be visualized as roughly the equivalent of your clenched fist held at arm's length. [ Skywatcher Photos: Jupiter & the Moon ]

Without a doubt, Jupiter and Venus are currently the bright evening "stars" in our sky.

Jupiter is perched at Venus' upper left during the early evening hours. The "King of the Planets" shines brightly enough ? two-and-a-half times brighter than Sirius, the brightest star (itself located at dusk shining brilliantly low in the southeast sky).?

And yet, Venus is still nearly five times brighter than Jupiter. The two planets will be slowly edging closer together in the coming weeks. They'll appear closest to one another, just 3 degrees apart, March 13.

This week, Jupiter doesn't set until around midnight local time, which means it's still high enough at nightfall for steady images in a telescope; Jupiter is enveloped like Venus in a perpetual cloud cover. Broad cloud bands cross the planet and are visible even in a small telescope, appearing to cross its disk parallel to the planet's equator.

Jupiter's disk is noticeably flattened at its poles because the giant planet is turning so fast on its axis ? once around every 9 hours 50 minutes. For comparison, if Earth rotated on its axis as fast as Jupiter, our day would be only 53 minutes long!

A small telescope should also reveal four of Jupiter's moons ? the famous "Galilean Satellites" that were discovered by Galileo with his crude telescope in January 1610.?

It's always interesting to watch these four moons through a telescope as they appear to change their positions relative to each other from hour to hour and from night to night.

On Sunday night, for instance, if you train a telescope on Jupiter ? or even steadily hold binoculars with at least 7-power magnification ? you'll see two moons, Ganymede and Callisto, on one side of Jupiter, while the other two, Io and Europa, will be on the other side. But on Monday evening, three moons will be gathered on one side (Ganymede, Io and Europa) while Callisto sits by itself on the other side of the big planet.

Myanmar shift to democracy not over, more reform ahead: minister (Reuters)

DAVOS, Switzerland (Reuters) ? Myanmar has already done a lot to reconnect with the international community and win investment, but the return to democracy is not complete and more political and economic reforms are needed, its trade minister said on Saturday.

The southeast Asian nation has opened up to the outside world with astonishing speed since a civilian government took office last March after five decades of army rule, releasing political prisoners and launching democratic reforms.

The prospect of the end of Western sanctions imposed for human rights abuses has prompted a surge of interest from investors who view the former Burma as one of Asia's last "frontier markets."

But asked whether he thought Myanmar has done enough to get U.S. sanctions lifted, U Soe Thane told Reuters Television:

"A lot of things we have done, but many more we have to do in the near future. The democratic process is not finished yet."

"We have a lot of things to reform and lots of things have to change: laws, regulations and institutions, not only in the political sector but also in the economic sectors. But sanctions are up to them."

On Monday, the European Union started relaxing its sanctions by suspending travel bans on top Myanmar officials, which allowed U Soe Thane to lead Myanmar's first official delegation to the World Economic Forum after decades of isolation.

But Washington has yet to take any steps and says much will depend on smooth April by-elections.

U Soe Thane said he was encouraged by dozens of meetings with leaders and executives at the annual gathering in the Swiss resort of Davos.

"I met a lot of people here, other ministers and CEOs, more than 20, and we discussed co-development," he said.

"Our location, our market and resource potential are very important for them so they are willing to invest in our country."

A law due to be passed by parliament by the end of February will offer eight years of tax incentives to bring capital to such sectors as farming, tourism and energy, the minister later told a panel devoted to Myanmar's future.

Nobel Peace Prize winner and opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi said in video address to the forum earlier this week that the minister's presence was a sign of positive changes in the country.

She said that the nation has not yet reached its "great transformation," but the elections in April could bring that point closer and preparations for the polls kept her from attending the summit. Suu Kyi was released in 2010 after spending 15 out of the past 20 years under house arrest.

U Soe Thane said Suu Kyi would become a senator if she won in her constituency and then it would be up to the country's president to decide whether to ask the former political prisoner to join the government.

Years of economic mismanagement by the military coupled with U.S. and European sanctions have left the economy in tatters with infrastructure that is rudimentary at best and about a third of its 60 million people living on a dollar a day.

But its rich gas deposits and other natural resources, large and young workforce, and a potential as a tourism destination barely touched by development are making it an attractive target for companies seeking to grow while mature economies struggle.

Japan's trade minister led a group of executives at the start of the year and a similar delegation of U.S. businesses is expected to visit the country next month.

Myanmar's energy minister earlier this week told Reuters energy companies from Norway, Brazil, Russia and Japan were all interested in investments in the sector.

In Davos, Starwood Hotels & Resorts - which runs chains such as Westin, Sheraton and Le Meridien - and Marriott International both expressed interest in running hotels in Myanmar.

Hazanavicius wins top honor from Directors Guild (omg!)

Director Michel Hazanavicius arrives at the 64th Annual Directors Guild of America Awards in Los Angeles on Saturday, Jan. 28, 2012. (AP Photo/Dan Steinberg)

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Michel Hazanavicius has won the top film honor at the Directors Guild of America Awards for his silent movie "The Artist," giving him the inside track for the best-director prize at the Academy Awards.

French filmmaker Hazanavicius, whose credits include the "OSS 117" spy spoofs, had been a virtual unknown in Hollywood until "The Artist," his black-and-white throwback to early cinema that has been a favorite at earlier film honors.

The Directors Guild honors are one of the most-accurate forecasts for who might go on to take home an Oscar. Only six times in the 63-year history of the guild awards has the winner failed to win the Oscar for best director. And more often than not, whichever film earns the directing Oscar also wins best picture.

29 Chinese missing after militant attack in Sudan

(AP) ? Militants apparently captured 29 Chinese workers after attacking a remote worksite in a volatile region of Sudan, and Sudanese forces were increasing security for Chinese projects and personnel there, China said Sunday.

China has close political and economic relations with Sudan, especially in the energy sector.

The Foreign Ministry in Beijing said the militants attacked Saturday and Sudanese forces launched a rescue mission Sunday in coordination with the Chinese embassy in Khartoum.

The Ministry's head of consular affairs met with the Sudanese ambassador in Beijing and "urged him to actively conduct rescue missions under the prerequisite of ensuring the safety of the Chinese personnel," the statement said.

In Khartoum, a Chinese embassy spokesman said the northern branch of the Sudan People's Liberation Movement announced that 29 Chinese workers had been captured in the attack. The spokesman, who asked not be identified, gave no other details and it wasn't clear if the militants had demanded conditions for their return.

Other details weren't given. The official Xinhua News Agency cited the state governor as saying the Sudan People's Liberation Army attacked a road-building site in South Kordofan and seized the workers.

The Sudan People's Liberation Army are a guerrilla force loyal to the southern movement and hail from a minority ethnic group now in control of much of South Sudan, which became the world's newest country only six months ago in a breakaway from Sudan.

Sudan has accused South Sudan of arming pro-South Sudan groups in South Kordofan. The government of South Sudan has called such accusations a smoke screen intended to justify a future invasion of the South.

China has sent large numbers of workers to potentially unstable regions such as Sudan and last year was forced to send ships and planes to help with the emergency evacuation of 30,000 of its citizens from the fighting in Libya.

China has consistently used its clout in diplomatic forums such as the United Nations to defend Sudan and its longtime leader Omar al-Bashir. In recent years, it has also sought to build good relations with leaders from the south, where most of Sudan's oil is located.

Chinese companies have also invested heavily in Sudanese oil production, along with companies India and elsewhere.

Perhaps most famously, President Barack Obama and the first lady danced to a version of the song at his inauguration ball.

"Etta James was a pioneer. Her ever-changing sound has influenced rock and roll, rhythm and blues, pop, soul and jazz artists, marking her place as one of the most important female artists of our time," Rock and Roll Hall of Fame President and CEO Terry Stewart said after her death.

James won four Grammy Awards, including a lifetime achievement honor and was inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993.

She scored her first hit when she was just a teenager with the suggestive "Roll With Me, Henry," which had to be changed to "The Wallflower" in order to get airplay. Her 1967 album, "Tell Mama," became one of the most highly regarded soul albums of all time, a mix of rock and gospel music.

Over her lifetime, James battled adversity, including a turbulent upbringing and drug addiction.

She rebounded from a heroin addiction to see her career surge after performing the national anthem at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles. She won her first Grammy Award a decade later, and two more in 2003 and 2004.

She is also an inductee into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

James is survived by her husband and two sons.

'Hunger Games' Stars Tackle Your Final Questions!

Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth share their favorite bands and much more.

Once again, we're back with "Hunger Games" stars Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth for a final round of fan-asked questions and answers with the three soon-to-be superstars.

Over the course of the past few weeks, Lawrence, Hutcherson and Hemsworth have addressed varied topics such as on-set pranks, on-the-job injuries and which actor is most like his or her character.

Today marks our final installment, in which the three lead actors from the highly anticipated film discuss musical influences, getting into character, being on fire and chemistry with their co-stars.

@vic_rendueles: Music plays a big part in the HG. What type of music inspires you and why?

Josh Hutcherson: Music is a huge part of my life. If I feel off for a couple of days, chances are I've not been listening to enough music — it's that important to me. But I listen to everything from '60s rock and roll to the Arctic Monkeys to the Black Keys to dubstep, so it's literally full-on schizophrenic, my music taste.

Jennifer Lawrence: I was just listening to Mumford & Sons on the way up here — love Mumford, the Black Keys, Jack White. I'm really looking forward to the musical part of the movie; T-Bone Burnett is producing it, and he's the best in the world, so I'm really looking forward to that.

Liam Hemsworth: One of my favorite bands is Coldplay; I love Coldplay. I love a lot of old school rock too — Pink Floyd, Guns N' Roses — I love that stuff. Music is a great way to get in a good headspace if you have an intense scene or any kind of scene. There's always some kind of music that can help you feel and get in to that kind of headspace.

@KiwiMcI: Was it hard to balance Katniss' inner vulnerability with the strength she's forced to adopt in the horrors of the arena?

Lawrence: Wow, what a question. Let's see, I think everybody has vulnerability and strength. I think she's vulnerable anyway, like all of the tributes, because none of them really want to be there. They're chosen randomly, they're all forced into the arena. She gathers strength, she has to fight to survive. She's promised her sister that she would come back, so she replaces her vulnerability with strength.

@maartjej239: How was it to be "on fire" in the chariots?

Lawrence: Oh, that was fake. I wasn't actually on fire, thank God. ... I think they'll just add that later, hopefully. @eringabin: In a postapocalyptic world like Panem, what would your most valuable survival skill be?

Hemsworth: I'd hope that I could shoot like Katniss. That would probably help a lot. I can't, though.

@LoveAcrossTime: From the trailer alone, the fans already see the amazing chemistry between [Katniss and Peeta]. Was that an instant thing?

Hutcherson: It really was. Jennifer and I hit it off right away, as did myself and Liam. Jennifer and I are kind of from the same part of the country, we had a similar upbringing, the same kind of system, more or less. She's just a very real person, and you don't meet many actresses that are super real and down to earth and genuine and are extremely talented on top of all that, so she kind of has the whole thing going on, and she's an awesome person. I really hit it off with her.

Viadeo vies for Arab expansion with Moroccan branch (Reuters)

RABAT (Reuters) ? Viadeo, the world's second-biggest online networking site for professionals after LinkedIn, said on Friday it had opened a regional branch in Morocco as it seeks to expand its presence in the increasingly-wired Arab world.

Viadeo, which targets professionals, job seekers and recruiters, shelved plans for an initial public offering last year to focus on growth in emerging markets.

"Morocco is the first country in Northern Africa and within the Arab world where Viadeo has established an office; this follows the opening of an office in Senegal in March 2011," Viadeo said in a statement.

Morocco accounts for a quarter of Viadeo's 2 million members in Africa. The increasing use of Internet and high youth unemployment in the Arab world, which hovers around 30 percent in Morocco, is a boon for businesses like Viadeo.

"The membership base in Morocco has doubled in less than a year and represents the second French speaking community of the platform after France," it said.

Chevy Volt caught in Washington?s crossfire

The Chevrolet Volt electric vehicle is shown.

By msnbc.com news services

The Chevy Volt became a political punching bag on Wednesday, with Republicans accusing the Obama administration of hiding fire risks from the public, and General Motors saying its signature electric vehicle unfairly got caught in political crosswinds.

Jim Jordan, chairman of the House Oversight regulatory subcommittee, said it was disturbing that U.S. safety regulators waited six months to open a formal investigation after their own crash tests uncovered fire risks.

He speculated that the administration may have been preserving its own interests. President Barack Obama has heavily promoted electric vehicles like the Volt, and his administration oversaw a U.S. government bailout and bankruptcy restructuring of GM in 2009.

GM Chief Executive Dan Akerson had his own theories about how politics influenced the probe. He told the hearing that the Volt got "disproportionate scrutiny" because it became a surrogate for election-year politics and commentary on GM's business and Obama administration policy.

"We did not engineer the Volt to be a political punching bag. And that, sadly, is what the Volt has become," Akerson said.?

After the hearing, Akerson told CNBC that he welcomed the chance to get the company?s point of view on the record, adding that the automaker would now have to reconstruct the car?s public image.?

?We are making good products and cars the market loves, whether it?s the volt or other cars,? he said.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened an investigation on November 25 into the safety of the Volt's battery pack after its own repeated tests uncovered fire risks.

The fires occurred after NHTSA crash tests or other tests where the car's lithium-ion batteries were purposely damaged, and GM has stressed that no "real world" incidents have been reported.

NHTSA closed its two-month investigation last week without finding any defects and expressing satisfaction with GM's remedies to better protect the lithium-ion battery pack.

David Strickland, the agency's administrator, said investigators first needed to analyze why the fires occurred. He said the agency had no real-world data on Volt fires and used "every second" over a six-month period for engineers to perform a thorough investigation.

Strickland said there was no unreasonable risk to public safety and said he would have sounded a public alarm had there been a reason to do so.

"We pulled no punches," he said under withering questioning from Jordan and other Republicans on the committee. "The Chevrolet Volt is safe to drive."

Akerson, who owns a used Volt, said he knew of no pressure from the Obama administration to squelch any public discussion of the fires. He said the administration has no seat on the board and no influence over business decisions. Taxpayers owned a majority stake in GM after its $50 billion bailout and bankruptcy in 2009, a stake that was reduced to a third through the company's public share offering in 2010.

The Volt is the centerpiece of GM's efforts to lead on fuel efficiency. Its development has been supported by Obama, who envisions electric cars as a game changer in reducing oil imports and tailpipe emissions.

The administration has aggressively backed more than $2 billion in funding of suppliers and other research that spurred development and production of the $40,000 Volt and battery systems designed for other electric vehicles. Volt owners are eligible for a $7,500 tax credit for buying a the vehicle, a benefit Obama has sought to sweeten without success.

There are roughly 8,000 Volts on the road today and another 6,500 have been manufactured. All will undergo retrofits to better protect the battery from damage in crashes. GM will also take steps to reduce chances of coolant leaks, which can trigger fires.

Democrats, including Elijah Cummings and Dennis Kucinich, were aggressive in challenging Jordan and Darrell Issa, the chairman of the full Oversight panel. The Democrats said it was the prerogative of Congress to look at the issue, but that the investigation had gone off track.

"I'm concerned that the intended effect of this hearing is to undermine technology that is critical to both protecting the environment and ensuring the success of the U.S. auto manufacturing industry," Kucinich said.

The Oversight Committee has spearheaded the congressional investigation of Energy Department loan programs, including financing of bankrupt solar panel company Solyndra.

Hi there, just came across this and it sounds like it'd be a lot of fun, though I'd thought I'd check on the OOC first.

Would you say a wererat would come under stereotypical high fantasy monsters? Ive seen them a few times in fantasy settings, but they're a bit underrepresented. I have a wererat character that I'd rather like to develop if they'd suit the setting.

This is actually pretty interesting and refreshing roleplay premise. I hope you find much support in your indeavors.

@Vitaminheart Yes wererats are fine, though, if you are the first lycanthrope to apply you would need to cover the basics of lycanthropy as well. Likewise if someone playing a werewolf beat you to the punch you would have to abide by the rules for lycanthropy created by them.

@Zerotolerance Thanks, dude. I am crossing my fingers. This is my third try on this site so perhaps it will be the charm.

I would be fine with that. I have a rough therianthropy mythos in mind anyway, so it shouldn't to be too tough, thanks.

If you would allow, I'd love to write up a gnoll character.

@Vio Gnolls are classic and therefore fine. There are really only two types of monsters I'd refuse, one are the random fellows like weresheep, animate furniture, and carnivorous broccoli. The other are out of genre creatures like tanuki, chupacabra and xenomorphs.

@Vitamin Sounds good and don't assume from my use of the word 'lycanthropy' that it has to be a disease. They need to be shapeshifters, of course, because that's at the core of the mythos, but how you explain the shapeshifting whether curse, disease, inherited gift or animal soul, is your call.

Obama's State of the Union: A viewer's guide (The Week)

New York ? On Tuesday night, the president will spell out his prescription for America's ills, and makes the case for his re-election. A look at what to expect

President Obama will deliver his third State of the Union address?at 9 p.m. on Tuesday night, pitching initiatives on jobs, taxes, and housing in what political strategists say will be a "sweeping case for a second term." In a preview of the speech posted on his campaign website, Obama said he would present a "blueprint" for lasting economic prosperity, calling 2012 a "make-or-break moment for the middle class and folks trying to work their way into the middle class." What exactly will Obama say, and how will his message be received? Here, a five-point map of what to expect:

1. The speech will be a campaign-style populist appeal
Obama's State of the Union address will be a "starkly populist speech," says Matt Spetalnick at Reuters, in which the president will hammer themes he has already hit on the campaign trail. He'll "push tax breaks for bringing manufacturing jobs home from overseas, ideas to help the troubled home-mortgage market," and he'll probably make another call for higher taxes on the rich. Absolutely, says Obama advisor David Plouffe. "Warren Buffett famously" said that "he should not pay less in taxes than his secretary does," and you can bet that Obama will specifically outline his proposed "Buffet rule" on Tuesday night.?

SEE MORE: The 'creepy' Barack Obama mannequin

?

2. Obama will confront a "do-nothing Congress"
"President Obama has spent the past three months railing against a 'do-nothing Congress,'" says Devin Dwyer at ABC News, and his annual address before a joint session of Congress gives him "the opportunity to deliver his message face to face." Obama will insist his economic agenda deserves bipartisan support, a pointed reference to his GOP rivals. And with 43 million Americans expected to tune in, he'll get to deliver his message to an audience bigger than any on the campaign trail.

3. The GOP will get a look at what might have been
With the GOP primaries becoming a heated duel between Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich, says Aaron Blake at The Washington Post, Tuesday night will provide the party's voters a glimpse "of what could have been. Namely, Mitch Daniels." The Indiana governor, who briefly considered his own run for the presidency last year, will deliver his party's State of the Union response. Daniels "always has been the adult in the room," an unflinching but pragmatic conservative. Maybe he'll "serve as a good example for presidential campaigns that seem headed for the lowest common denominator."

SEE MORE: Obama's top 5 successes

?

4. Obama will have a chance to honor Gabrielle Giffords
Before stepping down from Congress to focus on her recovery from a near-fatal gunshot wound, Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) will attend Obama's speech. "Obama last year delivered his State of the Union just weeks after the Tucson massacre and in the presence of victims' family members," says The Washington Post in an editorial. "Yet he, like so many politicians intimidated by the gun lobby's muscle, could not muster a single word about the need for reasonable gun control measures to ward off such violence in the future. Perhaps he will find the courage to speak up this year." It would make for a fitting prime-time tribute to Giffords before she leaves Congress.

5. One of Obama's political enemies won't even show up
One person who won't be in the audience is Rep. Doug Lamborn (R-Colo.), "who found himself in hot water last summer when he used the term 'tar baby'" in reference to Obama, says Seung Min Kim at Politico. Lamborn apologized for that comment, which he made to emphasize that he didn't want to engage with Obama at all, because then "you're stuck, and you're part of the problem now, and you can't get away." He's apparently avoiding the State of the Union for a similar reason. "Lamborn is doing this to send a clear message that he does not support the policies of Barack Obama, that they have hurt our country," his spokeswoman, Catherine Mortensen, tells?Politico in an email.
