Square scores retail deal with AT&T, swipes smile off competitors' faces
Been paying for your frappuccino via Square, and fancied getting some of that diminutive payment-taking action for your own business? Well, previously, if you didn't live near an Apple store, Radioshack, Walgreens, Fed Ex office, Best Buy, Target, UPS or Wal-Mart then you were fresh outta retail-luck. Or living in a cave. Now, however AT&T has started stocking the card readers at all its bricks and mortar outlets too, further plumping-up that number of locations that stock it. Frankly, we're not surprised to see this reaching more shops, if the sales guys spend all their time drinking that brand-endorsed coffee.

No Google Maps for Amazon's new Kindle Fire

Amazon's new Kindle Fire will have mapping services via a tie-up with Nokia Oyj, according to two people familiar with the situation, filling a gap in the tablet's capabilities while snubbing Google's popular service.
The world's largest Internet retailer, which says its nine-month old Kindle Fire now accounts for one in five U.S. tablet sales, has teamed up with Nokia on mapping, the two people told Reuters.
Amazon will release at least one new version of the Kindle Fire next Thursday.
Amazon will also add location capabilities to the new Kindle Fire, which requires either a GPS chip or a process known as Wi-Fi triangulation, the people said on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak ahead of Thursday's launch event.
Mapping services, which are popular features on tablets, typically include street maps, information about local businesses and sometimes traffic status. They can also support navigation instructions and third-party applications that depend on location information, such as travel services.
Location capabilities mark the location of tablet and smartphone users.
Google's Nexus 7 tablet, which competes directly with the Kindle Fire, comes with GPS receiver chips to support location and mapping functions.
The first Kindle Fire launched last year and at $199 costs half the price of the entry-level Apple Inc iPad, helping it rapidly gain consum?er acceptance. On Thursday, Amazon said its Kindle Fires had completely sold out.
Analysts say the 7-inch device helps drive sales of digital media such as e-books and music, which in turn propels core retail growth for the company.
Amazon may unveil larger versions of the Fire on Thursday in Los Angeles, analysts and media say, which will compete more directly with the iPad.
Although the Kindle now runs on an early version of Google's Android, which Amazon developed into its own operating system, it does not integrate Google Maps into the device. That means users had to access Google Maps via a Web browser, or download map apps from third-party developers.
A Nokia spokesman declined to comment and an Amazon spokeswoman did not respond to requests for comment.
Cooperating with Nokia may help Amazon develop integrated, or "native," mapping functionality for the Kindle Fire without relying on Google Maps. Nokia is one of the world's largest mapping companies, through its 2007 acquisition of Navteq.
Apple took a similar step earlier this year, when it dropped Google Maps in favor of its own mapping features for its next mobile operating system, known as iOS 6. As part of the switch, Apple signed a global licensing deal with TomTom, another leading mapping company, for its map content and related information.
In July, Amazon agreed to buy mapping startup UpNext, which specializes in detailed 3-D maps of cities and some sporting stadiums.?

Romance at the RNC: Man proposes to girlfriend onstage
It looks as if Ann Romney's message from Tuesday night - that this is about love - struck a chord. Bradley Thompson, 32, proposed to his girlfriend of three years, Laura Bowman, on the stage of the Tampa Bay Times forum on Wednesday.
Neither Thompson nor Bowman are here as delegates - in fact, it's not even clear if they're Republicans; the couple declined to tell reporters when asked which party they support. Bowman is a production coordinator and Thompson is a production manager for the convention. The couple met three years ago on a production job and they live in New York City.

Bowman said she thought something fishy was going on when she was called for a sound check. Although they knew they would be engaged eventually - the couple told reporters that they had actually picked the ring together - Bowman said she didn't think it would happen today.

There's no word yet on the wedding plans for the couple.

HBT: Cubs sign Castro to $60 million extension
Making official what was first reported two weeks ago, the Cubs have finalized a seven-year, $60 million contract extension with shortstop Starlin Castro that includes a team option for 2020.
Castro is making the minimum salary this season and would have been arbitration eligible for the first time next year. And as a ?Super Two? player he would have had four total seasons of arbitration eligibility before reaching free agency.
All of which means the seven-year extension covers all four arbitration seasons and his first three free agent seasons while giving the Cubs a $16 million option or $1 million buyout on his fourth free agent year. Carrie Muskat of MLB.com has the year-by-year breakdown:
Signing bonus: $6 million
2013: $5 million
2014: $5 million
2015: $6 million
2016: $7 million
2017: $9 million
2018: $10 million
2019: $11 million

Castro already has 1,761 career plate appearances with a month to go in his age-22 season. In the history of baseball the only shortstops with more plate appearances through age 22 are Robin Yount, Edgar Renteria, Alex Rodriguez, Elvis Andrus, Arky Vaughan, and Travis Jackson. If he turns out to be as good as the worst player on that list the Cubs will have gotten a bargain in Castro?s extension, which covers the rest of his twenties.

Certainly in the future new organisms can be grown and integrated at the same time to become cybernetic life forms. However, for all of us who are already grown getting a mesh inside of our tissues presents a whole other engineering problem.

Some stuff supporting short stories ? Haley's Comment
Hello. I?ve some good news ? I managed to sell a short story to famed magazine Interzone. I think I first submitted a story to them back in 1993 or so, and have tried five or six times since, so this is a big deal for me. I?ve had a few shorts published before, by Hub Magazine, and in the Dark Spires anthology, and you know, seeing as I?ve got three books out and another four on the way, I think I can just about get away with calling myself a writer. But getting a short into Interzone means I?ll hold my head that little higher. Being published by them brings a kind of legitimacy to an author that?s hard to gain elsewhere. They carry stories by all manner of very talented writers after all, and have helped launch the careers of many big name authors. I feel like I have a foot in the door of the big boys? club now.
The story, ?iRobot?, will be out soon-ish ? I?ll let you know when as soon as I know myself.
I?ve another short out sooner ? ?The Rite of Holos?, the first piece of Black Library work I?ve written to get published. Concerning Space Marines of the Blood Drinkers chapter, it?s a kind of sneaky prequel to something I can?t really talk about yet. You can read ?The Rite of Holos? in September?s issue of Hammer and Bolter, which is on sale very soon.

To celebrate the acceptance of ?iRobot?, here?s a piece I wrote for Death Ray?s ?Deep Thought? section way back in 2008 on short stories (I?ve actually being saving it for just such an eventuality as this). Originally published in DR 16, where we started publishing a short story every issue ourselves, in it I talk about short stories, why they?re important, and why they?re not as popular as they might be, plus there are comments from many writers/anthologists/short story publishers on the same topic. Some of it?s a little out of date, some details regarding publication etc have changed (I deleted a segment on Jim Baen?s Universe, as that closed in 2010, and Hub, as far as I can tell, hasn?t had a new issue since last year), but it?s mostly still relevant.
Incidentally, the short stories were quite popular in Death Ray, but the comment I most often heard was, ?I don?t read them, but I?m glad that they?re there.? A telling attitude in light of the discussion below.
The long and the short of it
Short stories used to be the whole of the genre, but all that changed. Guy Haley wonders why big is so good in our current age?
We live in an era of bloated books. A non-fan that wanders into the SF section of a book shop could be forgiven for thinking that the genre is sold by the kilo. As brilliant as some of these tomes are, others exhibit the worst excesses of airport potboilers, their size a response to the demand for more words per currency unit.
But it was not always so. ?Short stories in magazines used to be very nearly the whole of the SF genre,? says professional fan Dave Langford. ?One important early critical book, James Blish?s The Issue At Hand, is mainly about shorts and novellas. Now there?s an odd market gap between ever-longer novels in the bookshops and ever-shorter flash fiction for dwindling attention spans on the web.?
Anthologies, too, used to be a mainstay of the book industry, but not any more. Why shorts do not to sell is puzzling. Fantastical writing has always been used by writers to present outlandish or controversial concepts, and the rabbit-punch delivery of shorts adds a wallop of extra power. Many writers excel at short fiction. Author and ex-New Worlds editor Michael Moorcock tells us: ?It does seem to me that some writers, especially those exploring something other than character, do best in the form but write at novel length often because it?s harder to make a living from short fiction. I can think of a number of SF writers who did their most impressive work in short stories, including Theodore Sturgeon, Ray Bradbury,?Harlan Ellison, J.G. Ballard and M. John Harrison.?
It?s not just SF. ?Ghost stories are notoriously difficult to sustain over novel length. After a short? while the reader naturally thinks, ?Hang on, we?ve had page after page of suspense, when are we gonna see this ghost/monster/alien then??,? says author John Whitbourn. ?And, once you?ve ?seen? it, how many more times can you bear seeing it before familiarity breeds contempt??
Fantasy once thrived on shorts too; that genre?s name might conjure up the image of the 12-book cycle now, but think on Fritz Leiber, Robert E. Howard, and Clark Ashton Smith. Where would Conan be without short stories?
Shorts allow writers to explore new ideas. They inspire other writers. Shorts are the sparks of the genre that set off big fires. A writer can make you think several times with a book of shorts, and some ideas simply don?t have enough juice in them for a novel. Can you imagine Ellison?s ?I Have no Mouth and I Must Scream?, or Ray Bradbury?s ?The Veldt? supporting 350 pages? Indeed, look at Isaac Asimov?s ?Nightfall?, much undermined by its novel length incarnation. The short is the home of the clever concept, the killer twist.
Writing shorts is also vital to a writer?s development, their length instilling discipline. ?Short stories are where many of us learned our basic skills: plot, character, a beginning and an end,? says Robin Hobb.
Michael Moorcock again: ?I learned to write by doing 1,500 word shorts for the likes of Tarzan Adventures, then 3,000 worders for New Worlds, then 12,000 and 15,000 novellas for Science Fantasy and the like? My first published novel Stormbringer was put together in four, 15,000 word parts, which could not have been published in anything but a fantasy/SF magazine.?
Not for nothing does Peter Crowther, editor at PS publishing and Postscripts magazine, call short stories ?the lifeblood of the fantastical genre.? He goes further. ?I still hear from people who begin their writing career with a full-length book, which is like saying you?re going to learn to be a carpenter, but instead of kicking off with a wooden teapot-stand for your mum you build a 20-room, three-storey clapboard house with turrets and pillared front porches. Ridiculous!?
They make good TV and movies, says Hobb, and Whitbourn might have a point when he says, ?Short stories are ideally fitted to our time-poor era. Yet paradoxically, the trend is to tendon-threatening 500+ page books.?
With all this going for them, what in the name of the Cthulhu happened? You can blame the war.
Short fiction once supported a burgeoning industry. In the 19th century, rising literacy fuelled the growth of Penny Dreadful crime magazines in the UK and Dime Novels in the US, which were mainly concerned with the still wild Wild West. These were supplanted by pulp magazines in the early 20th century. Pulps were mass entertainment, and they covered everything. Printed cheaply on low-grade ?pulp? paper (hence the name), hundreds of titles came out every month ? they were so plentiful, unsold stock was used as ballast in ships. But paper shortages in the ?40s forced many pulps to close, never to reopen, although a few hung on until the 1960s. The end of the war also saw fierce competition from TV, later gaming, then the ?net. Ironically, the final decline of printed short stories coincides with the rise of ?geek culture? brought about by electronic media.
Author Stephen Hunt, editor of SFCrowsnest.co.uk, is not optimistic about the form?s future. ?[Shorts] are about as relevant to the current state of SF as a flying tentacled robot abducting a screaming bikini model from a lawn party (ah, that was real cover art). Our kids are the future, and they?re more interested in Twittering and playing EverQuest than the next silly asses? attempt to resurrect Amazing Stories ? however much old gits like me would have it otherwise. They?ll always be the small press of course, but they?re the last thudding breaths of a triceratops choking on asteroid dust, and deep down we all know it.?
I don?t entirely agree with him, and contrary to what Whitbourn says, lack of time is likely to make people want bigger books, rather than shorter tales. In frantic lives, people like predictable escapism, a continuum of comfort. Series of novels give you cliffhangers, the possibility to find out what happens next; shorts don?t.
I suspect the majority of the reading public are unaware of the glories of the short. We?re herd-like creatures. People read chocking great paperbacks because it is what everyone else is doing. And people used to read short stories in pulp mags, to an extent, because that?s what everyone else used to do. We are far more ruled by custom than we think, and custom is only fashion with longevity.
Of course, custom is created by innumerable small choices, and a good part of the pulp mags? demise, and thus the short form, can be planted at the feet of people who like to read short stories. It goes like this: In any one special interest group, there is a vocal minority. Over time, this elite sets what is ?right? in the group, and this begins to restrict the subject?s appeal to the elite that defines it. If you have a declining market anyway, companies ? and let us not forget,?all these things are supposed to make money ? tend to concentrate on this elite, as they appear to be a sure-fire revenue stream. This can be deadly as the elite naturally dwindles and is not easily replenished. It happened to comics in the early 1990s, although they recovered. It happened to roleplaying games in the late ?80s. I think it happened to short SF too. Modern SF shorts can be challenging, full of experimental imagery, weird cross-genre fusions and political point-making. The reasons for their lack of popularity are the same as why Eastenders has a bigger audience than one-off dramas screened on BBC3 and 4. Caught up by the artistic aspirations of the New Wave, the ?SF elite?, I think, focused this corner of the genre on telling stories that attempted to be ?significant?, so much so sometimes it feels as if adventure and entertainment have been left behind. SF has its snobs, as much as anything else. Much of what I read seems self-consciously worthy, or self-consciously weird to the point of pretension. Not that?s there?s anything wrong with this, and such a focus does produce great stories, but they do have limited appeal.
Anyway, that?s by the by. There are numerous other factors in play that mean pulp magazines are not part of our cultural outlook any more. But, and this is a big but, contrary to what some might say, short fiction is still being published, some writers still make money from it (though it is debatable if publishers do), and happily short fiction looks to be undergoing a digital renaissance. A handful of print mags still exist, but on the web podcasts, blogs, and ezines can be found that serve up a pleasing mix of story, albeit often in a wild, unimproved form. However, there are a number of professional e-publications ??Jim Baen?s Universe and Orson Scott Card?s Intergalactic Medicine Show among them. Mass media might have fragmented popular culture by presenting so much choice, but there are still markets in some of those fragments, and the ultimate mass medium, the internet, allows short story writers to reach out to these markets.
?I think electronic publication is the future and the salvation of the short story,? writer and editor Mike Resnick says, ?I can?t tell you which e-publications will live and which won?t, but I can tell you that some of the highest-paying short fiction markets today are all e-zines, and that as quickly as one folds you can look for three or four to take its place.?
The story of the short is a long one, and it isn?t over yet.

Interzone
The UK?s best known short story magazine, Interzone has been running for 26 years and has helped start the careers of many British SF writers. It is bi-monthly. TTA, Interzone?s publishers, also put out Black Static and Crimewave, horror and crime magazines respectively.
The Mammoth Book of?
Death Ray worships at the short-story altar of Constable & Robinson publishing, who publish several massive tomes of SF, horror and fantasy every year. Editor Gardner Dozois does a particularly fine job of scouring the world for good tales in one of the SF variant. Each has 30 of the best stories in its particular genre, more or less, and is a bargain at ?9.99.
Asimov?s Science Fiction
One of a number of fiction magazines that used celebrity names as a marketing hook, Asimov?s has been running since 1977 and is one of the most well-respected SF magazines in the world. This US mag is currently published by Dell magazines. Asimov?s publishes 10 issues a year.
Analog Science Fiction and Fact
The longest running SF magazine in the world, the US Analog began life as a pulp way back in 1930 under the name Astounding Stories. It flourished under the editorship of John W. Campbell, who discovered many important writers and moulded many more. It is he who is credited with making pulp SF think about the actual future, how its science might work, rather than simply using it as a backdrop for adventure tales. Several name changes on, Analog, which carries articles on popular science too, continues to flourish. It is now also owned by Dell publishing.
Escape Pod
The best SF short story podcast on the web, Escape Pod presents mostly pre-published stories by well-known authors. It has two sister sites, Pseudopod and Pod Castle that deal with horror and fantasy. All three podcasts are weekly and free, though a discretionary donation is politely requested. Escape Pod includes wide-ranging discursive introductions, and even the occasional piece of SF themed music.

Isaac aims at north Gulf Coast after raking Fla.
KEY WEST, Fla. (AP) ? Tropical Storm Isaac churned toward the northern Gulf Coast early Monday and promised to give the Republican National Convention a good drenching after lashing the Florida Keys and Miami area with wind and rain.
The National Hurricane Center predicted Isaac would grow a Category 2 hurricane over the warm Gulf of Mexico and possibly hit late Tuesday somewhere along a stretch that starts west of New Orleans and runs to the edge of the Florida Panhandle. That would be one day shy of seven years after Hurricane Katrina struck catastrophically in 2005.
A Category 2 hurricane has sustained winds of between 96 and 110 mph (154 to 177 kph) and a strong storm surge. Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal called a state of emergency, and 53,000 residents of St. Charles Parish near New Orleans were told to leave ahead of the storm.
Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant and Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley also declared states of emergency, while oil companies began evacuating workers and cutting production at Gulf offshore rigs in Isaac's projected path.
Several area governors have altered their plans for this week's GOP convention in Tampa. Bentley has canceled his trip, and Jindal said he's likely to do so unless the threat from the storm subsides. Florida Gov. Rick Scott gave up a chance to speak.
Even though the storm was moving well west of Tampa, tropical storm-force winds and heavy rains were possible in the area because of Isaac's large size, forecasters said. A small group of protesters braved rainy weather Sunday and vowed to continue despite the weather, which already forced the Republicans to cancel Monday's opening session of the convention. Instead, the GOP will briefly gavel the gathering to order Monday afternoon and then recess until Tuesday.
Tampa Mayor Bill Buckhorn, a Democrat, said the weather would be "squirrely" but predicted the storm would not unduly interfere with the convention.
"We're going to show the world on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday what a great place this is," he said. "As a state and a city, we're going to put on a good show and be a great host for the Republican Party."
As of 2 a.m. EDT Monday, the storm was centered about 110 miles (175 kilometers) west of Key West, Fla., according to the National Hurricane Center in Miami. Isaac had top sustained winds of 65 mph (100 kph) and was moving west-northwest near 14 mph (22 kph).
Florida, historically the state most prone to hurricanes, has been hurricane-free since it was hit four times each in 2004 and 2005. Isaac will likely prove barely a memory for South Florida and Keys residents, who mostly took the storm in stride as its center passed just south of Key West on Sunday.
"This is routine for us," said Annie Lopez, 47, a lifelong Key West resident. "It's down to a science."
Added Jean Claude Philemy of Miami: "Every year it's almost the same. We can deal with it."
The storm did knock out power temporarily for around 16,000 customers throughout South Florida, and 555 flights were canceled at Miami International Airport. That forced some people to shuffle their travel plans and kept many, at least for a day, from enjoying their beach vacations.
"I have friends who tell me to come in January," said Peter Muller, who was visiting Miami with his family from Germany. They spent part of Sunday at a Miami-area mall. "Maybe they know best."
In the low-lying Keys, isolated patches of flooding were reported and some roads were littered with downed palm fronds and small branches. But officials said damage appeared to be minimal, and many Keys residents held true to their any-excuse-for-a-party reputation.
"The storm was the most fun thing ever!" exclaimed Sergey Jadzevics, who were taking pictures on famed Duval Street in Key West, a fresh bottle of vodka in hand.
"It's not really scary," added Kevin Furcrown, another Key West resident. "It's more of a hassle than anything."
The Gulf Coast hasn't been hit by a hurricane since 2008, when Dolly, Ike and Gustav all struck the region.
Before reaching Florida, Isaac was blamed for eight deaths in Haiti and two more in the Dominican Republic, and downed trees and power lines in Cuba. It bore down on the Keys two days after the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Andrew, which caused more than $25 billion in damage and killed 26 people in South Florida.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) ? With Isaac bearing down on New Orleans, the city finds itself at a delicate moment in its rebuilding since Hurricane Katrina struck seven years ago.
Private and government investment is fueling the push to overhaul some of the city's troubled but culturally rich neighborhoods near the French Quarter, where poor families are being replaced as wealthier ones move in. Few would argue that the city's in a boom ? and even gentrifying. But some question whether it will wither the roots that grew the city's distinctive identity.
"New Orleans is becoming a boutique city like San Francisco," said Gary Clark, a politics professor at Dillard University. "You may see black middle class moving in, but with gentrification there's overwhelmingly white individuals of means who become the new urban pioneers."
The number of whites, although smaller than before Katrina, has grown as an overall percentage from 28 percent to 33 percent of the city's population. The city has its first white mayor since the 1970s, while the City Council now has a majority of white members.
On the flip side, blacks say there's danger that their community will be diminished in a city that owes deep cultural and economic debts to its Afro-Caribbean roots. Since the storm the African-American community has shrunk by about 118,500 people, dropping from about 68 percent of the population to about 60 percent.
"(Blacks) don't see themselves as being a part of the recovery economy and getting real opportunity," said Nolan V. Rollins, the Urban League of Greater New Orleans president.
It's not clear what effect Isaac could have on the city. Early Tuesday morning, Isaac was still a tropical storm packing top sustained winds of 70 mph in the open Gulf. Forecasters said they expected it would become a hurricane over the warm Gulf Waters and come ashore near New Orleans by early Wednesday, the seventh anniversary of Katrina's devastating strike on the city.
This winter the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development plans to demolish the last of the New Deal-era public housing still standing in New Orleans ? the 850-unit Iberville complex. It was erected over the slums of what was for a time the nation's only legal red-light district, Storyville.
The demolition is part of a $31 million HUD "choice neighborhoods" project, a concept pushed by the Obama administration across the nation. HUD hopes that by starting the process of gentrification, private investment will follow and the communities will become desirable places for all races and classes to live in.
Linda Couch, a public housing expert at the National Low-Income Housing Coalition, said the new approach "has the elements of success."
Meanwhile, another $4 billion in private and government investment has been pouring into the historic neighborhoods of Iberville and Treme, the hearth of the city's African-American culture.
The 1.4 square miles where much of the redevelopment is occurring has long been known for gumbo, jazz, voodoo and civil rights pioneers. Immigrants from around the world lived side by side with blacks in Treme and Iberville, where Louis Armstrong once walked the streets and delivered coal as a boy.
But the entire area fell on hard times after the 1960s, as whites moved to the suburbs and bad urban planning took its toll. By the time Katrina hit, it was struggling and looked like an urban desert of blight, drugs and abandonment in many areas.
The plan for redeveloping the area could include the removal of a noisy concrete interstate expressway that runs through Treme with the hope of restoring what was one of the city's main streets for black commerce. Work is already underway to turn an unused rail corridor into a miles-long walking and bike path called the Lafitte Greenway, turning old schools into new charters and opening "fresh-food" supermarkets.
Taking down the Iberville housing complex is crucial, planners say, to connect Treme with the downtown's theater and business district on Canal Street.
"I think we can retain the soul of New Orleans and in fact enhance it by going through this process," said David Gilmore, a HUD housing expert leading the planning effort.
Many residents see a chance to save neighborhoods that have fallen prey to drugs, poverty and blight.
"We're happy if someone moves down the street into a blighted property," said Jennifer Jones, the self-styled "queen of the second-line" and member of a Treme family of musicians. "No one's angry about whites moving in. When we grew up, there was a lot of mixing going on," Jones said.
But others are apprehensive.
"Maybe they've got their reason," said Lionel Glenn, a 69-year-old retired laborer who ended up at Iberville after another project he was in was torn down after Katrina. "I'd like to stay, but I've got to move."
A recent article in a black community newspaper, The New Orleans Tribune, blared: "They're here" in referring to whites looking to buy up inner-city property. The headline read: "Gentrification: The New Segregation."
Unlike the other redevelopments after Katrina, HUD promises to find housing for all the 440 families at Iberville within about 1 mile of the project.
After Katrina, most of the city's projects were torn down quickly and families were dispersed across the nation. Advocates charged that policy forced poor families out of New Orleans. Public housing units were cut in half at those complexes.
"What has happened is exactly what many people predicted would happen," said Lance Hill, who runs the Southern Institute for Education and Research, a race relations center at Tulane University. "Blacks have ended up in apartments ringing the city."
Mayor Mitch Landrieu says there is no reason to fear the redevelopment.
"We're building it back better than it ever was before and the way it always should have been."
In Treme, there are about 200 more white households than before Katrina, Census data shows. Newcomers and old-timers have clashed, even at times over the noise from the impromptu second-lines, the cherished musical parades, which routinely break out. Also, longtime residents worry about the closing of neighborhood bars.
"They are looking for a French Quarter look-a-alike but with a bedroom community feel," said Al Jackson, a Treme resident and historian.
One newcomer is David Williams, a 49-year-old school administrator. He bought an historic home that for now he rents out. The last batch he rented to was a group of young people with Americorps.
Once their son leaves home, he and his wife have talked about moving into the city and living in the house they've bought.
"In 10 years (this neighborhood) is going to look like Treme does a block away from the French Quarter," he said.

Beats by Dr. Dre Wireless
We are now several models into the Beats by Dr. Dre line of headphones and speakers. And Monster, the company that initially co-launched the brand with the debut of the Monster Beats by Dr. Dre,?is no longer part of the equation. If there's one characteristic Beats is known for, aside from the lowercase "B" logo that's become a ubiquitous sight at sports press conferences and in music videos, it's intense bass response. Audiophiles and purists are not likely to be interested, therefore, in the Beats by Dr. Dre Wireless ($279.95 list)?, a good-looking Bluetooth headphone pair that offers powerful audio, along with bass response that's extremely boosted. The headphones are good looking and well made, but the high price, another common Beats trait, is a bit too high.
Design
Beats does branding better than just about anyone besides Apple these days?you immediately know what you're looking at, or at least you know you've seen it before if you don't know about Beats by Dr. Dre. The shiny plastic band and "b" logo, combined with either white or black frames with gray and red highlights, fit quite well in the oft-imitated Beats line-up. The black, supra-aural (on-ear) earpads for the Beats Wireless are plush and comfortable, and though they sit on the ear, they are almost (but not quite) large enough to enclose it like a circumaural pair would. Most headphone pairs with well-cushioned earcups also have well-padded headbands, but the interior of the Beats Wireless headband employs a thin, rubbery cushion that offers very little in the way of comfort. For short listening periods, you're unlikely to notice, but wear these for an hour or so, and it can start to feel like it's pressing on your skull a little too much.
No one will accuse Beats of not including enough controls on its Bluetooth headphones. The right earcup has a Power/Pairing button, a Play/Pause control, as well as Track Forward and Backward buttons and Volume controls. Though it can take a bit to memorize the position of each, they are thoughtfully covered with Braille-like bumps so you can feel where to press.
Included with the headphones are a USB charging cable, a 3.5mm audio cable with phone controls, a cleaning cloth, and a padded zip-up carrying case that the headphones fold into. Both cables (and the cloth) are the trademark Beats red. The inclusion of the audio cable is a thoughtful move?one that most manufacturers often skip. This allows you to use the headphones in passive mode, without depleting the battery (or when the battery has already been depleted).
The Beats by Dre Wireless headphones offer support for Bluetooth SBC, aptX, and AAC codecs, and the pairing process with Bluetooth mobile devices is simple and quick.
Performance
Audiophiles and purists tend to prefer headphones with flat responses or less exaggerated bass response, and thus are not likely to enjoy the Wireless Beats. These headphones have serious low-end, to the extent that classical music, like John Adams' "The Chairman Dances," can occasionally sound almost comical, with the already ominous, intense presence of lower register strings, brass, and percussion boosted to the point that they sound more like massive synthesizers rather than acoustic instruments, overpowering the rest of a mix with added rumble and resonance.
If the world were only for audio purists, though, what a boring world it would be. The Beats line works best, generally, with modern mixes for pop, rock, and hip hop, where deep, sub-bass frequencies are often par for the course. Not only can the Beats Wireless reproduce intense low-end, like the electronic synth beat at the opening of the Knife's "Silent Shout," without a hint of distortion at maximum volume (on both the sound source and the headphones), but it sounds good doing so.
It may not be the most accurate reproduction of sound, but it can feel as if you're in a club or at a concert when playing Jay-Z and Kanye West's "No Church in the Wild" or Lower Dens' "Brains." If the intense thump of the kick drum or rumble of a bass line is what you're looking for, who cares what audiophiles say? The Beats Wireless delivers the rest of frequency range with a reasonable-enough level of integrity that you can enjoy being a bass fiend without sacrificing too much clarity, though some mixes can lean towards the muddy end of the spectrum.
Lots of headphones can create massive bass rumble, even wirelessly, and several of them, like the $80 Outdoor Technology DJ Slims, can do so at a significantly lower price. Thus, while it looks great and offers powerful audio, the Beats by Dr. Dre Wireless feels a bit overpriced, occupying a realm typically reserved for pairs that are more devoted to accurate audio reproduction. If you're looking for something in between the Outdoor Technology model and this one, in terms of price, the Sennheiser MM 100 ?and the Phiaton PS 20 BT ?are both solid choices, though the latter is an in-canal earphone pair. When you pay for Beats, you are paying for powerful audio, but also for looks and Dr. Dre's implicit endorsement. If they were $200, I'd say these were pretty fairly priced for the distortion-free audio, stylish look, and added passive/wired functionality they provide, but $280 is pushing it. So, thumbs down on the pricing, but otherwise, this is a top wireless choice for bass lovers.

On Monday's edition of the ABC News wakeup program, Roberts made official the start date for what's being called her "extended medical leave."
Roberts told viewers in July that she has MDS, a blood and bone marrow disease once known as preleukemia.
She says she will be hospitalized next week to prepare for the bone marrow transplant that will take place about 10 days after that.
But looking further ahead, Roberts noted she is luckier than many workers who become ill. She says her bosses have been generous in giving her the needed time off, and her job is waiting for her when she's well enough to return. She described herself as "very blessed."

France ready to recognise Syria opposition government
French President Francois Hollande stepped up pressure on Syria Monday, saying France would recognise a provisional government and warning of a foreign intervention if the regime uses chemical weapons.
In a speech to French diplomats, Hollande called for an "intensification of efforts for the political transition to take place quickly" and urged the Syrian opposition to form a "provisional, inclusive and representative" government.
"France will recognise the provisional government of the new Syria as soon as it is formed," he said.

Hollande was on the same page with the United States and Britain when he warned the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad that using chemical weapons would be a legitimate reason for a foreign intervention.
"We with our allies remain very watchful to prevent the use of chemical weapons by the regime, which would be for the international community a legitimate cause for direct intervention," Hollande said.
Hollande also confirmed France was working with its partners on the possible establishment of buffer zones within Syria to receive people displaced by the conflict and prevent them flooding over the borders into neighbouring states.
Turkey in particular has been pushing for such a move, which would require military back-up to ensure the security of the refugees.
"We are working ... (on) the initiative of buffer zones proposed by Turkey," Hollande said, adding that "we are doing so in coordination with our closest partners."
Hollande said the opposition of Russia and China to action against the Syrian regime was weakening the United Nations.
"I am saying to Russia and to China that their attitude in the Syria crisis is weakening our capacity to fulfill the mandate given us by the United Nations charter," he said.
"Our country only participates in operations to keep the peace or protect civilians by virtue of a mandate and therefore a resolution of the United Nations Security Council," Hollande said.
"For this the (Security Council) members must take their responsibility to allow it to take decisions," he said.
Hollande said resolving the Syria crisis was crucial not only for the country itself but for the region as a whole.
"I know the difficulty of the task, I understand the risks, but the stakes go beyond Syria. This concerns the security of all the Middle East and in particular the independence and stability of Lebanon," he said.
Hollande also touched on Iran in the speech outlining his foreign policy priorities, saying it was unacceptable for Tehran to obtain nuclear weapons and warning of new sanctions.
"It would be unacceptable for Iran to obtain a nuclear weapon and this country must meet its international obligations," Hollande said.
"As long as Iran does not answer all questions (on its nuclear programme) and does not conform to international law, it is France's responsibility to further increase sanctions against the Iranian regime."
