The Compass Rose: People Who Died: Anselm Hollo 1934-2013

Anselm Hollo as a young man - at about the time I knew him

Ted Berrigan wrote a poem once called "People Who Died"--which you can read in his Collected Poems, and even hear him read via the PennSound link. Berrigan had at least two sides to his nature--one very weirdly insincere and playful, and one very emotional and occasionally sad. I was reminded of it yesterday when I received word that Anselm Hollo, who had been my first poet-instructor at the Iowa Writer's Workshop in 1969, had died yesterday morning in Colorado, surrounded by friends and family, following a long and exhausting illness. And again just now, when the spam-box of my email just received an advertisement for "Life Insurance." What a funny concept, when you think about it, life insurance. ?There isn't any such thing as life insurance; no one, nothing can insure you against death. We're all uninsurable! And yet the business stubbornly refuses to acknowledge the fact, playing off our fears and apprehensions about the consequences of mortality. It's very important, apparently, to make elaborate and fail-safe plans against the possibility of dying messily, as if one of our most crucial responsibilities, in life, or most important tasks, for those who are left behind, was to relieve them of the problems, the loose ends, created by our departure.?

Since I began writing this blog, I've written about quite a few writers, many of whom are dead, some of whom died after I wrote about them. Several of the subject pieces were written on the occasion of their deaths. Growing up in a family of exiles, I was not raised to pay much attention to death, or to mark its occasion with much fanfare. My parents had both left the Midwest, to find a new life on the West Coast, during WWII. They tended not to say very much about the people, or the life, they'd left behind, the people they had known who died, including their parents. Their exile was a form of alienation, not uncommon in this restless mobile land of the free. I've never been a church-goer, as an adult, so attending funerals isn't something I do. Sometimes I think that not marking death's occurrence in a formal way helps to keep the idea of it, its presence, at bay. However, I do think about death, and increasingly now in my mid-60's. For some reason, it surprises me to realize I have reached this stage in my life, though I always knew I was destined for it. It seems to have snuck up on me, as it does to most people, while I was just minding my business, attending to my plans and expectations for the present and future.?

Since I began this blog in January 2009, I've written posts about Donald Justice, John Updike, Ronald Johnson, Louis Zukofsky, MFK Fisher, Harold Pinter, Larry Eigner, Robert Creeley, Marianne Moore, ? ?Ian Hamilton Finlay, George Oppen, Joe Brainard, Ed Dorn, Philip Whalen, Louis Simpson, Robert Frost, Paul Blackburn, Patrick Schnoor, E.B. White, Max Beerbohm, H.L. Mencken, J.D. Salinger, Gertrude Stein, Wright Morris, John Wieners, William Carlos Williams, E.E. Cummings, Jack Gilbert, Matthew Arnold, Anthony Hecht, Philip Levine, Ernest Hemingway, Stewart Ogden Smith, Jon Anderson, James Wright, James Schuyler, Cyril Connolly, Kenneth Koch, Gerard Manley Hopkins, James Joyce, Charles Dickens, Truman Capote, Joe Ceravolo, Dylan Thomas, James Welch, Darrell Gray, Christopher Isherwood, Cid Corman, Walker Percy, Frank O'Hara, Ambrose Bierce, Weldon Kees, Gore Vidal, Beatrix Potter, David Goodis, and Raymond Carver.?

What all these names have in common is that they're all dead people. Some of them died after I wrote about them: Louis Simpson, Jack Gilbert. I wrote a handful about a few?when they died.?

My only son died in 1996, in an automobile accident. His death was premature, certainly, but he had been an early-onset diabetic since the age of 4, so his longevity-expectation was not as remote as most. I will certainly never "get over" that tragedy; it will be with me always, along with the certain knowledge that I will not be survived by any descendants. Not that that part bothers me very much. Once in a great while, I think of my maternal great-grandmother, a woman who had been very beautiful in her youth, whom I know only through old sepia photos taken before the end of the 19th century. But I doubt she would have been much interested to know that I was coming down the road; she was very Victorian and formal and dismissive, by all accounts. Does anything of what she was survive in me? Who knows?

During the years I attended the Iowa Workshop, Ted Berrigan and Anselm Hollo were great friends. When Berrigan and Alice Notley had their two sons, they named one Anselm in his honor. Anselm went on to teach at other places, and eventually joined Naropa University as a member of the permanent faculty, where he taught for the last 25 years of his life. When I first knew Anselm, he was just living in America with a "Green Card"--worried about being refused permanent residence and/or American citizenship. A fact not often cited was that Anselm had lived in Iowa City as an "exchange student" while still in high school, traveling from his native Finland in the early 1950's. Later, after periods of living in Germany, and then Britain, he came to America. He actually seemed rather British in his manner, when I knew him, though he was a complex man, of many influences. ??

Anselm was a brilliant, and very well-educated man, but he hid his shrewdness and his erudition--at least in the time I knew him--under a veneer of almost continuous amusement and self-deprecation. This was partly a gentlemanly courtliness, but partly a self-effacing shyness. Anselm probably thought of me as a pretty square fellow, but he was always considerate and respectful and indulgent of my immature writing.?

Anselm was a realist. His poems were about real things, and the voice he cultivated as a writer was his own voice, a voice that reflected how he actually thought, without pretense or equivocation. Just being around him was a demonstration of the honesty he projected as an artist. Anselm the man, though, had some difficulties maintaining the various personae of his life: teacher, husband, father, poet, friend. I suppose he managed to come to terms with his various demons in the years after I knew him.?

The thing about Anselm was that his mind floated over the facts and conditions of his existence with a sort of equipoise. A speaker and a reader in several languages, he seemed to perceive life (and history, and literature) in layers. This sense of being above events and somehow apart from them gave his conversation, and his work, a sense of objectivity. He maintained the air of an amused skeptic, always ready to find delight and absurdity in the baffling events of the larger world. He never seemed to take himself so seriously that he couldn't see irony or vanity in his own life.?

Though our paths never crossed again after I left Iowa in 1973, I remember Anselm Hollo as a felt presence in my life. He left an impression, in a way that most of the other teachers or friends I've had, didn't. An impression of kindness, gentleness, delicacy, and penetrating perspicacity. By the time I learned that he was dying, it was too late to tell him these things.?

But Anselm was not the fellow to accept open praise--that kind of formality was not something he seemed to wear comfortably. Nevertheless, I'm moved to tell him, though he will never hear or read these words. What we say about people we loved or admired, after they've died, is important to us, the living. It is our way of saying what we feel. It's a formal act, almost religious in its implication.?

Bless you, Anselm, for your words and your work. Your memory lives on. ? ??

Like many fungi and one-celled organisms, Candida albicans, a normally harmless microbe that can turn deadly, has long been thought to reproduce without sexual mating. But a new study by Professor Judith Berman and colleagues at the University of Minnesota and Tel Aviv University shows that C. albicans is capable of sexual reproduction.

The finding, published online by Nature January 30, represents an important breakthrough in understanding how this pathogen has been shaped by evolution, which could suggest strategies for preventing and treating the often serious infections that it causes.

The most common fungus that infects humans, C. albicans is part of the large community of microorganisms that live for the most part harmlessly within the human gut. But unlike many of its neighbors, this one-celled yeast can also cause disease, ranging from thrush (an oral infection) and vaginal yeast infections to systemic blood infections that cause organ failure and death and usually occur in people with immune defects related to HIV/AIDS, organ transplantation or chemotherapy. C. albicans is responsible for 400,000 deaths annually.

Most single-celled organisms reproduce by dividing, but others reproduce asexually, parasexually or via sexual mating. Scientists have long believed that C. albicans reproduce without mating.

Organisms that produce asexually or parasexually are diploid, which means they have two sets of chromosomes and thus can reproduce without a mate. Organisms that reproduce sexually are haploid, which means they have one set of chromosomes and need a mate to provide a second set. C. albicans was believed to be diploid, but this study shows that the yeast is sometimes haploid, and that these haploids are capable of sexual reproduction.

Sexual reproduction fuels the evolution of higher organisms because it combines DNA from two parents to create one organism. The haploid isolates discovered in Professor Berman's lab arise only rarely within a population, and have been detected following propagation in the lab or in a mammalian host. These haploids can mate with other haploids to generate diploid strains with new combinations of DNA, which may provide the diversity required for fungus to evolve.

The haploid C. albicans isolates also pave the way for genetic studies of the pathogen, such as the construction of "libraries" of recessive mutant strains. In addition, the ability to perform genetic crosses between haploids will help produce modified diploid strains that should help scientists better understand interactions between the fungus and its host and how it transforms from a harmless microbe into a deadly pathogen.

GameStick reveals final backer-aided design, dock for peripherals

Gamestick reveals final backeraided design

Now that the Android-powered game console on a stick, GameStick, has been fully funded (five times over), another piece of the puzzle is falling into place: its final design. Taking suggestions from the Kickstarter backers that supported the device in the first place, the final design of the controller reflects, "a more ergonomic form with extended grips and a tapered shape to better sit in the hand." The HDMI stick that previous popped out from the bottom of the controller now rests around back -- it's now got a MicroSD slot built in as well, allowing up to 32GB of expandable memory (bringing the maximum of expandable memory up to 104GB -- that's a lot of Android games).

A docking station is also in the cards, which enables a whole mess of peripherals via USB, HDMI, and ethernet ports -- it's powered separately, so you can charge your GameStick controller without having to turn on the console. You can also charge your controller on it wirelessly, according to PlayJam. All said, it's got one ethernet port, a full size SD card reader, three USB ports, and three HDMI ports (one out, two in), and comes as part of an option $109 bundle on the Kickstarter page. As for its sale price separately from the GameStick, PlayJam's staying mum for now.

GAMESTICK UNVEILS FINAL DESIGN INSPIRED BY KICKSTARTER COMMUNITY

London & San Francisco; January 29th, 2013; As the GameStick Kickstarter campaign (http://kck.st/12SSvMO) enters its final few days, the team announce their final designs of the device as well as a new docking station for every peripheral conceivable.

GameStick; Kickstarter´s most recent success story, currently sits at over 500% of its original target with over $500K raised at the time of writing. The team waits on tenterhooks to discover the final figure to be revealed at 04:23 PST on Friday 1st February.

"It´s hard to believe that we launched GameStick just a few short weeks ago. The Kickstarter campaign has been a roller coaster of a ride and one which has given us more feedback than we could ever have possibly imagined." says PlayJam´s CMO, Anthony Johnson, "We have been able to take that input and literally better shape our product to give our backers a truly bespoke creation - one which has been designed by the Kickstarter community that backed it."

The new design sees subtle changes to the controller, which gets a more ergonomic form with extended grips and a tapered shape to better sit in the hand. The housing for the HDMI stick has been moved to the rear of the controller and the stick itself now supports an expandable 32GB MicroSD card slot in response to overwhelming demand. The finish has also been meticulously designed meet the highest of standards.

Additional requests from the backer community resulted last week in the GameStick team announcing support for peripheral hardware through a previously unspecified docking station. The dock brings on board a number of sought after features such as; wire-free charging for the controller, a number of USB and HDMI ports to support peripheral hardware such as keyboards, mice, microphones and cameras as well as support for yet more storage bringing the total potential capacity of the bundle up to 104GB.

"The GameStick Dock is a prime example of how we have moved rapidly to innovate while still in the pre-production phase," continued Johnson, "it has made for a 'hairy' 30 days but we think the results are worth it and we are delighted that we have been able to tailor the product as much as we have in such a short time-frame"

The GameStick Kickstarter campaign has reached its first two stretch goals with just under $60K to go to hit it´s third and final stretch which will add a number of colour options to its range; a target the team hopes to hit before close. Backers have been urged to vote for their favourite colours on the GameStick Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/GameStickNews) in a poll to establish the final color.

(AP) ? Grammy-winning singer Chris Brown is under investigation for an alleged assault in a West Hollywood parking lot, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said early Monday.

Deputies responding to a report of six men fighting Sunday night found the scene clear, but were told by witnesses there had been a brief fight over a parking space.

"The altercation allegedly led to Chris Brown punching the victim," the department said in a statement released early Monday morning.

The "victim" wasn't identified, but the celebrity website TMZ, which first reported the fight outside the Westlake Recording Studio, said it also involved Frank Ocean, one of the top nominees at the Grammy Awards next month.

In a Twitter posting later, Ocean said he "got jumped by (Brown) and a couple guys" and suffered a finger cut.

It wasn't Brown's first problem in the run-up to the Grammys. His attack on singer Rihanna on the eve of the 2009 awards event overshadowed the show.

Last June, he was injured in a brawl with members of hip-hop star Drake's entourage at a New York nightclub.

No arrests were made. Brown was gone by the time deputies arrived but the department said the investigation is ongoing and Brown would be contacted later.

Email messages to Ocean's publicist and Brown's lawyer and representative were not immediately returned. A man answering the phone at the recording studio declined to comment.

(AP) ? Players on both Super Bowl teams say they are confused about when a hit is legal by NFL standards.

Rules designed to make the game safer are also making players uncertain about which hits are considered clean and which ones could lead to a fine.

San Francisco tight end Vernon Davis wondered if two-hand touch is in the future for the NFL.

"I think the rules will change a lot," he said Tuesday. "There's already no helmet to helmet. Might be flag football, maybe."

Baltimore Ravens safety Bernard Pollard, one of the league's hardest hitters, warned against trying to take collisions out of the game, as long as they are clean.

His 49ers counterpart, All-Pro Dashon Goldson, says defenders keep this in mind when they take the field:

"Do your best and then hope you don't get a letter (with a fine) in your locker on Wednesday," he said.

How to Sell Your Home By Yourself: Advice for the FSBO

For Sale by Owner, TorontoDear For-Sale-By-Owner Seller on MLS:

I understand that you want to make as much money on your sale as possible and that it isn?t cheap to sell a house. But I fear you don?t know the whole story. Now I won?t pretend to be unbiased ? I?m a REALTOR after all and I make a living by selling houses like yours. But there are a few things you should know about being a For Sale By Owner (FSBO), and I?m betting the company you?re paying peanuts to simply put it on MLS isn?t telling you:

1. If you want to sell your home, you need to be prepared to show it. When I call you to make an appointment to bring my client on Wednesday, telling me that you ?you have hockey Wednesday night but might be home on the weekend so, check back with me on Saturday and I?ll see if I?m around? just doesn?t work. There are plenty of other houses and condos for my client to see, and neither of us is likely to schedule our lives around your unconfirmed schedule. Showing your home is time-consuming and you need to be flexible.?

2. Offering me a $1 commission to bring you a Buyer is not only insulting, it?s not likely going to work. Yes, I will show your home to my client even though your neighbour is offering me 2.5% and the $1 you think my time is worth won?t even cover my gas to drive to your home. But you should know that my Buyer is contractually bound to pay me 2.5% if you don?t, so the real price of your house is 2.5% higher then you have it listed for. Here?s the thing: my Buyer knows I?m worth more than $1 and they don?t want to pay you the same for your house as your neighbour?s house AND pay me 2.5%. I guess they don?t want you to pocket that 2.5% that your neighbour is paying his REALTOR. Buyers can do the math too.

3. I know you think you have nicest house ever and those renovations in 1993 were expensive but you?re probably priced wrong. Pricing a house isn?t easy and it is a moving target. How much I think your house is worth today is probably not the same as I?ll think it?s worth next month or maybe even next week. How much you should sell your home for will change depending on the house that sold last night, the new listings in your neighbourhood that came up for sale today and what?s happening in the overall market. Are you staying on top of the market that closely? And I hope you have good negotiating skills by the way, you?ll need them.?

4. It?s not true that houses sell themselves ? you need to actually market the property. Sure, some people are lucky and have the perfect house in the perfect condition on the best street in a top neighbourhood, and maybe their house will sell itself. But that isn?t most people and it?s probably not you. Even Apple invests in marketing and their products are pretty spectacular.?

5. ?I know you decided to hire a company to help give your home exposure on MLS, but the company that listed your home on MLS for $1,000 probably doesn?t have great success rates and you may just have wasted $1,000. According to this blog, only 52% and 43% of homes listed by the top two companies that provide this service sold in 2012. Those are pretty brutal stats for Toronto?s hot 2012 real estate market. I know those companies tell you that they want to save you money, but they just pocketed over $1,000,000 in fees for houses that didn?t sell. Ouch.

Don?t believe the stats? Consider that Colby Sambrotto, founder of ForSaleByOwner.com, couldn?t sell his own New York condo?so he turned to a realtor?and sold it for $150,000 more than the original list price, covering the commission several times over. Not exactly a ringing endorsement of his product (other than how good it was for making him money; the condo was worth $2.15M).

6. ?I hope you?re prepared for the legal landmines that come with the sale of your house. I know your lawyer can help you with the paperwork, but there?s a lot more to selling a house than just an agreement of purchase and sale. Specifically, I hope you know what you need to disclose to potential buyers so that you stay out of court, and that you?re ready for the ?stuff? that comes up before closing?and it always does. It?s never fun to deal with.

7. ?If you don?t think hiring a REALTOR is worth the money, maybe you?ve been speaking to the wrong REALTOR. Marketing, negotiation, staging, pricing and understanding real estate law are skills that vary significantly from agent to agent and do impact the price you get for your home. ?

Now please understand, Mr. or Mrs. FSBO, that I wish nothing but the best for you. Sometimes selling a home on your own works, sometimes it doesn?t. And if we happen to meet across the negotiating table, I?ll do my best to represent my client?good luck.

A quick question just came to mind, as this seems a bit easier on linux (for a change) than on windows: how can you record a sample from say a movie, playing in e.g. vlc, into renoise? I used to just Convert the whole movie to mp3 and look for the good parts, but that annoying and tedious and takes all the fun out of the sampling. In linux I can just reroute some cables in JACK and I can straight hit record from renoise!
Anybody know of a good tool for this? VLC doesn't play through ASIO4All does it?

Virtual Audio Cable is one way. Another way depends if your soundcard driver has the function built in, something like "What U Hear" or "Loopback" are features available to do just that kind of thing.

Also, depending on the video format, you can actually load the video in to renoise in as a sample.

What I do is use my consumer-level soundcard as my default sound card in windows, and have the output routed physically into my professional audio card. I have it always monitoring, so I can always hear my regular computer sounds, while also being able to use my pro audio card for making music and sampling sounds from my PC.

A lot of consumer level soundcards, such as the onboard chipsets on motherboards, have a Record What You Hear type feature. This is what I've usually used. Not perfect but acceptable and easier, faster and more convenient than converting the whole file (and unless you are ripping the audio stream, rather than converting, possibly higher quality too.)

I would generally try and avoid going out of an onboard chipset and into your main audio interface. This is likely to give the lowest quality results out of all possible methods. Although some onboard chipsets are too bad these days so depending on your setup you might get perfectly usable results (as I assume Veggies must do.)

I don't think VLC has ASIO. There is an ASIO plugin for Winamp though.

Jack also works for Windows, but you need a video player capable of using Jack and you can only use Jack for the 32-bit version of Renoise since the 64-bit version somehow doesn't seem to be able connect.
Reaper can play video files so you might as well be able to link audio from Reaper to Renoise using Jack. But Reaper also has ReaRoute so you might as well slave Renoise to Reaper using ReaRoute and then toy with your movies.

He already said currently he rips the entire soundtrack and then cuts out the bit and that's what he wants to avoid in future. Is that not what this method would do? I know Winamp has a similar feature but it can only route to one output from what I remember (but I generally use an antiquated version as 2.x was always better for Shoutcast streaming than 5.x historically.) Plus I know I have run into issues with playback speed using this, think you need to make sure the soundcard samplerate is set the same as the audio you are ripping.

If you note down times of the wanted sample it might still be a slight advance on ripping the entire soundtrack and editing after though...

Yeah that'll probably be the windows workflow.. trying the virtual cable program linked by Jenoki but it definitely doesn't seem as straightforward a setup as jackcontrol is.

Twitter's Vine features porn video as 'Editor's Pick' thanks to 'human error'

    3 hrs.

Since Vine, Twitter's video-sharing service, launched on Thursday, it's been plagued by all sorts of woes. We noticed that it lacks privacy settings and?abuse prevention measures, Facebook prevented it from finding any friends through the social network, and now ... well, now pornographic?content has slipped?into Vine's?"Editor's Picks" section.

Vine's a rather neat service, in theory. If you've got an iOS device, you can create and share Vine videos. All you have to do is point your iPhone (or iPod Touch) at something and press your finger to the screen to record a clip up to six seconds in length (both sound and motion are captured, of course). Once done, you can share it to Vine, Twitter and Facebook. You can also use the app to browse through popular videos and those featured as "Editor's Picks."

And that's where Vine's latest troubles appear. On Monday morning, a video shared by "nsfwvine" ??an account created for the sole purpose of posting pornographic videos to Vine (hence the "Not Safe For Work" part of the name)???received the service's "Editor's Pick" badge of honor.

While the video did lose the "Editor's Pick" badge later in the morning, it was not removed from the service. Instead, it now carries a warning message declaring that the video?"may contain sensitive content" and requires a tap to be viewed. (From what we can tell, this warning message is automatically added to videos which are reported as inappropriate by Vine users.)

We have reached out to Twitter for more information regarding how the video in question?? which shows a young woman and a?sex toy?? was chosen as an "Editor's Pick." We wondered if some sort of automated process may be involved in the selection. A Twitter spokesperson explained that an actual person was actually to blame. "A human error resulted in a video with adult content becoming one of the videos in Editor's Picks," she wrote in an email to NBC News. "[U]pon realizing this mistake we removed the video immediately. We apologize to our users for the error."

We have also contacted Apple, as we suspect the Cupertino-based company is probably not all too happy about pornographic content being?prominently?featured in an iOS app. (It has banned apps for far less racy issues in the past.)

In the meantime, obscene material continues to flood into Vine. Several accounts ? including "nsfwvine" ? have been posting pornographic clips since Vine launched last week. Not all of porn clips?carry the "sensitive content" warning yet and it's not clear if any have been removed so far.

"Wow. How did this happen, Vine?" a user asked?on one of the videos, while another wondered "[c]an I flag this as inappropriate more than once?"

Should You Ever Deviate from your Customer Service Systems ...

24 Hr FitnessOn a recent trip to Santa Monica, my husband and I stopped into 24 Hour Fitness Express. Armed with a free three-day pass and dressed to sweat, I was ready to climb the Stairmaster and pretend to work off the previous night?s dark chocolate lava cake dessert.

Only there was a problem?I hadn?t carefully read the fine print (my inner lawyer had obviously accepted this time as vacation), which clearly stated the special offer was open to ?Local residents only.? ?No way midtown Manhattan could be ?local? to Los Angeles.

Membership Counselor James Sandoval took this all in stride, smiling like he could have been Manti Te?o?s twin brother (if he had one).? ?Let me talk to my manager,? he said.

James reported back within a matter of minutes.? 24 Hour Fitness Express was prepared to honor the three-day pass nonetheless?not just for the first day, but for all three days.? Wow!? I had steeled myself for paying the gym?s day rate. Gratefully, I accepted this unexpected gift?a real bright spot in my morning.

From a customer service systems perspective, though, did this make sense?? Clearly, the Club had systems for membership. Systems for marketing to local residents.? In-gym systems for welcoming people. If systems = efficiency, what would make a company deviate from their systems?

After my workout, I asked James and the Club?s Manager, Ivana Spasic. If we weren?t local, why be so generous?? They shared several important facets of the Club?s philosophy?and their approach to customer service:

    • We recognize it?s hard to work out and simple to?walk out; let?s make it easier for people to stay
    • We?re committed to helping people get fit and healthy in a friendly and welcoming environment
    • We see ourselves as ambassadors for the whole network of 24 Hour Fitness clubs

When have you made exceptions to your customer service systems rules? How did that work out for you?

Shawn Ryan Shares His Thoughts Jezebel's 'Female TV Writers ...

In January alone, TV will have lost, to cancellation or we?ve-been-on-for-7-seasons, three of its most powerful and talented minds in Tina Fey, Dana Fox, and Nahnatchka Khan. This is a bummer for two reasons, 1) 30 Rock, Ben and Kate, and Don?t Trust are excellent, and 2) the trio listed above are all female, and despite infuriating troll arguments to the contrary, there aren?t enough women TV writers. Jezebel?s Laura Beck wrote an article about this yesterday entitled ?The Sh*t My Dad Says Guy Gets Another Sitcom, But Where Are All the Women Writers?? which made some very good points, but, on top of the misplaced targeting of Justin Halpern, a producer for Cougar Town ??a show led by two strong women with multiple female writers ? also explained the issue, but offered few solutions.

I don?t doubt that Halpern might be a swell guy, but his shows are indicative of the type of ideas that are often given initial opportunities (and second chances) in the TV industry. A white guy telling his story is agonizingly familiar territory, and yet it?s awarded a rich pilot production commitment from a major studio. When I hear news like this, I can?t help but think about all the challenging, unique, and better ideas that are passed over for the same old shit ? and I bet a lot of them come from women.

Yes, there are exceptions, not every show on TV is about a white dude, or run by a white dude, but there aren?t nearly as many women writing shows as there are men. A 2012 Center for Study of Women in TV and Film study found that 68% of all TV shows don?t even have one female writer on staff. (Via)

But enough about what us dumb bloggers think about the issue ? let?s hear from The Shield and Terriers creator Shawn Ryan, who shared his thoughts on the article. Start reading from the bottom because I?m lazy.

Here?s what Chitra Elizabeth Sampath, a writer for Southland, had to say about the study:

So what did we learn? Well: there should be more females writing for TV shows, but it?s slowly getting better. There are women on the writing staffs for Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead, Mad Men, Community, Happy Endings, The League, Parks and Recreation, New Girl, Bob?s Burgers, Archer, and a bunch of our other favorites series ? hell, even Louie, which I?d argue is TV?s most ?male? show. Also, don?t quite bunk studies.

My solution to the issue: give me a show, some network, and I?ll hire ONLY female writers. Deal, AMC?
