(AP) ? To save the imperiled spotted owl, the Obama administration is moving forward with a controversial plan to shoot barred owls, a rival bird that has shoved its smaller cousin aside.

The plan is the latest federal attempt to protect the northern spotted owl, the passive, one-pound bird that sparked an epic battle over logging in the Pacific Northwest two decades ago.

The government set aside millions of acres of forest to protect the owl, but the bird's population continues to decline ? a 40 percent slide in 25 years.

A plan announced Tuesday would designate habitat considered critical for the bird's survival, while allowing logging to reduce the risk of catastrophic wildfire and to create jobs. Habitat loss and competition from barred owls are the biggest threats to the spotted owl.

Interior Secretary Ken Salazar called the draft plan "a science-based approach to forestry that restores the health of our lands and wildlife and supports jobs and revenue for local communities."

By removing selected barred owls and better managing forests, officials can give communities, foresters and land managers in three states important tools to promote healthier and more productive forests, Salazar said.

The new plan, which replaces a 2008 Bush administration plan that was tossed out in federal court, affects millions of acres of national, state and private forest land in Washington, Oregon and Northern California.

The plan to kill barred owls would not be the first time the federal government has authorized killing of one species to help another. California sea lions that feast on threatened salmon in the Columbia River have been killed in recent years after efforts to chase them away or scare them failed.

The U.S. Agriculture Department kills thousands of wild animals each year ? mostly predators such as coyotes ? to protect livestock. Other animals, including bears, wolves and raccoons also are killed through the program.

The latest plan for spotted owls was accompanied by a presidential memorandum directing Interior to take a number of steps before the plan is finalized, including providing clear direction for how logging can be conducted within areas designated as critical habitat and conducting an economic analysis at the same time critical habitat areas are proposed.

Officials acknowledge that the plan to kill barred owls creates an ethical dilemma, but say an experiment on private land in northern California has shown promising results. Spotted owls have returned to historic territories after barred owls were removed.

Salazar and other officials stressed the new plan's job-creation component, noting that for the first time logging would be allowed in areas designated as critical habitat for the owl. Previous plans had prohibited logging in areas designated as critical habitat.

"Appropriate timber harvests consistent with ecological forestry principles (should) be encouraged," the Interior Department said in a statement.

The American Forest Resource Council, a timber industry group, was skeptical that so-called ecological logging would produce a significant amount of timber or jobs. At the same time, the plan has the potential to double the amount of acres designated as critical habitat, said Tom Partin, the group's president.

"Habitat is not the current limiting factor for the northern spotted owl, nor is historic loss of old-growth" trees, Partin said. "In fact, the amount of old growth on our federal forests is increasing while the spotted owl's numbers are decreasing."

Conservationists also were wary. Steve Holmer of the American Bird Conservancy said his group was pleased that the administration was moving carefully to kill barred owls, but said officials appeared to be endorsing a big boost in logging inside critical habitat boundaries with no scientific studies showing it works.

The federal government has been trying to find a balance between logging and fish and wildlife habitat since at least the late 1980s. The spotted owl was designated as threatened under the Endangered Species Act in 1990 ? an action that led to massive logging cutbacks on national forests and other federal lands in western Washington, Oregon and Northern California.

The bird was blamed for the loss of tens of thousands of jobs and landed on the cover of Time magazine.

Despite federal efforts to protect it, the spotted owl continues to decline. A key reason is the barred owl, a larger, more aggressive East Coast cousin that has displaced spotted owls through much of their historic range.

Just how many barred owls would be killed and where remains undecided, although officials said hundreds of birds are likely to be killed with shotguns. The plan also calls for non-lethal removal of the barred owls, by capturing them and relocating them or placing in them in permanent captivity.

"We can't ignore the mounting evidence that competition from barred owls is a major factor in the spotted owl's decline, and we have a clear obligation to do all we can to prevent the spotted owl's extinction and help it rebound," said Fish and Wildlife Service Director Dan Ashe.

Eric Forsman, a U.S. Forest Service scientist whose work in the 1970s showed how the decline in spotted owls was tied to logging old-growth forests, was skeptical that killing barred owls would make a difference.

"There are not enough shotguns," he said. "It would be just about like trying to wipe out coyotes."

The Interior Department will accept public comments on the plan for 90 days.

Eye-tracking reveals variability in successful social strategies for children with autism spectrum disorders: Reports new study in Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry

Washington D.C., February 27, 2012 In a study published in the March 2012 issue of the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Katherine Rice and colleagues, from the Marcus Autism Center, Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, and Emory University School of Medicine, used eye-tracking technology to measure the relationship between cognitive and social disability in children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and the ability of children with ASD to pay attention to social interactions.

The study is the largest to date to observe children with ASD watching scenes of social interaction; 135 children, 109 with ASD and 26 without, all approximately 10 years old, participated. The children were shown movie scenes of school-age children in age-appropriate social situations. One set of analyses focused on the differences between children with ASD and typically-developing children, by closely matching a subset of those with ASD to typically-developing peers on IQ, gender, and age. A second set of analyses focused on measures that quantify the broad spectrum of adaptive and maladaptive behavior in ASD by analyzing variation across all 109 ASD participants.

Results indicated that children with ASD were less likely than typically-developing peers to look at other people's eyes and faces, and were more likely to fixate on bodies and inanimate objects. The results also revealed the varying ways in which children with ASD use the information they observe. For the entire group of children with ASD, increased observation of inanimate objects rather than people was associated with more severe social disability. However, for some subsets of the autism spectrum, such as highly verbal children with ASD, whose verbal IQs were larger than their nonverbal IQs, increased looking at others people's mouths was associated with less disability.

"These results help us tease apart some of the vast heterogeneity of the autism spectrum," said Rice. "For some children, atypical looking patterns may be serving as a compensatory strategy; but for others, these patterns are clearly associated with maladaptive behaviors. Objective, quantitative measures of social disability help us to identify these subsets in a data-driven manner."

Best Bets: 'The Lorax' speaks for the trees

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper

After a?blizzard of terrible movies?in January and February, Hollywood's starting to crank out some better films. Here's our look at the week ahead in entertainment.

Movies
"I am the Lorax, I speak for the trees." Yes, "The Lorax," Dr. Seuss's famed fable about protecting nature is coming to the big screen, and Fox's Lou Dobbs?is already mad about it. Danny DeVito voices the crabby little creature, and Zac Efron and Taylor Swift also voice characters. Efron made a blunder at the movie's premiere when he dropped a condom onto the red carpet. We're betting Lou Dobbs isn't too happy about that, either. But the movie looks fun and colorful, and yes, it's in 3-D, for better or worse. (Opens March 2.)

"Project X" looks a little like "The Hangover" for teens. (Todd Phillips directed "Hangover" and produces "Project X.") It's about three high-school seniors who?throw a wild house party that gets completely out of hand, as in ... the trailer shows their whole street apparently on fire, Dad's car ending up in the pool and a dwarf? climbing out of the oven. It stars a cast of newcomers who were chosen through a nationwide talent search. (Opens March 2.)

TV
"America's Next Top Model" will have a British accent this season. Despite the show's title, it will mix wannabe models from Britain with the usual slate of Yanks for a culture clash in couture. "Those Brits better watch their backs," snipes one contestant in the preview. Hey, Britain, we kicked you out once, and we can do it again. (Feb. 29, 9 p.m., The CW.)

?

In a world of Kardashians and "Jersey Shore" guidos and guidettes, there's a part of us that's still fascinated with those who resist the crazy spin of the world and keep things simple. We're forever?intrigued?by "The Amish," and PBS's "American Experience" has produced a two-hour movie about the insular religious community and its lifestyle. The executive producer notes that it took more than six months of trust-building before the Amish allowed the cameras into their homes and businesses, and the Amish themselves are still not seen on camera except from a distance. (Feb. 28, 8 p.m., PBS.)

DVD
Martin Scorsese's Oscar-nominated "Hugo"is a love letter to the early history of film, but even if the oldest film you know is "Star Wars," you might appreciate its dazzling story. Young Asa Butterfield and Chloe Grace Moretz wander through a Parisian train station unwinding a secret left to young Hugo by his late father, and meeting up with a legend in cinematic history. (Feb. 28)

Parents of little girls, you've got your next birthday present.??"My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic: The Friendship Express" will be as addictive as Pixy Stix for the pony-lover in your life. It includes five episodes of the animated show, plus several bonus features. We don't need to mention that this show has a large contingent of adult male fans, dubbed "Bronies," do we? It's certain they already know about this DVD. (Feb. 28)

What You Should Not Do When Doing Business Online

The Internet is full of articles with tips on the things you need to do if you would like to pull in more money online. There are not as many articles that will tell you what you should NOT do if you want to up your earning potential on the Internet. The fact is that it is just as important to learn what things you need to avoid doing as to learn what things you should be trying like crazy to do. You can save yourself time and energy by learning from mistakes that other people have committed. Continue reading to learn what you should not do.

Don?t let greed and lust control you. The Internet is filled with affiliate offers that are plastered with images of mansions, yachts, luxury cars, etc and testimonials from gorgeous models who claim that they made tons of money almost right away simply by using the same software that they are trying to entice you to buy. Keep your head and do your research before clicking the buy button. You would do some research into any product being so forcefully promoted to you offline. You have to practice this logic on the internet as well.

Don?t try to go too far too soon. Start with something small to test the waters. These smaller opportunities are important while you determine what to do to help yourself and what to do that will hurt you. For example, start with one easily salable affiliate product. Don?t try to develop your own product and affiliate program outright. Try out blogging by yourself before you try to launch a fully blown subscription based online magazine. This will allow you time to really get a taste for something before committing yourself completely and then discovering that you hate the field you?ve chosen.

There are a lot of opportunities for slacking off when you are working from home. Do not give in to the urge to slacken! If you honestly have an easier time thinking with the television on as background noise and while sitting on the sofa and working on your computer that?s fine. If you find, though, that you spend more time watching television than getting work done, you?re in trouble. It is good to set up a space in your home and devote a certain amount of time to that space, just like you would if you had a traditional job. It is essential that you don?t let all of those chores that used to wait until the weekend get in the way of your getting done what must get done for your IM business. This is tough in the beginning but if you are diligent you can train your brain and body to ignore the distractions of working at home.

IM newbies make many slips. These are three of the biggest. Learn from the mistakes that others have made and apply what you have learned to get ahead of the other new people with whom you are competing. Remember that you need to take advantage of every help that comes your way!

(AP) ? Each year at the Oscars ceremony, Hollywood says goodbye to stars and filmmakers who've passed away. This year, the award show will bid adieu to the Kodak Theatre.

Just a decade ago, the glamorous 3,300-seat venue was touted as the Oscars' first permanent home, but the 131-year-old company has forfeited its sponsorship of the venue as it struggles with bankruptcy.

The move symbolizes Kodak's fading star power in Hollywood. Although seven of the nine "Best Picture" nominees were shot on Kodak film, the industry's increasing use of digital editing and projection has ravaged the company's printing business.

About half of the world's commercial screens now show movies from digital projectors, and by some estimates, film reels will soon be a thing of the past.

"35-millimeter is coming to the end of its life," said David Hancock, head of film and cinema for research firm IHS Screen Digest. "In four years' time there will be no film printing business."

Kodak film has long been a favorite of cinematographers. But more and more movies are shot using digital cameras, and the notion of a "cutting-room floor" littered with celluloid scraps has given way to studios with computerized tools such as Avid Technology Inc.'s Avid DS and Apple Inc.'s Final Cut Pro.

At their peak, motion pictures accounted for more than 12 billion feet of film processing each year, enough to reach the moon and back five times, according to IHS. This year, IHS predicts film processing will shrink to about 4 billion feet as an increasing number of theaters receive their "films" by satellite or via hard drives delivered by courier.

"We no longer ship (film) to most theaters," Philippe Dauman, chief executive of Paramount Pictures owner Viacom Inc., told a conference last month. "We have helped them implement digital distribution so we don't have to make so many prints."

The billions of dollars that major studios save on film ? and its costly ingredient, silver ? has resulted in revenue declines for the Eastman Kodak Co. division that once accounted for the vast majority of the company's overall revenue.

In the first half of 2011, revenue from the division that makes motion picture stock film was $763 million, about half the $1.57 billion it posted in the same period in 2008.

Film printing volume was crucial to Kodak. Although it takes about 1 million feet to shoot a feature film, studios need about 100 million feet to print enough copies for the widest of North American releases.

Kodak sees its future in commercial imaging devices and printing. Still, the motion picture business is significant, accounting for somewhere under a quarter of its revenues. The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in January with $6.7 billion in debt.

Kodak is unable to afford the marketing boost the Oscars once gave it.

Last week, a bankruptcy court judge approved its early exit from a 20-year naming rights deal it signed with Kodak Theatre owner CIM Group in 1999. As a result, Kodak won't have to pay the $3.6 million annual naming fee.

The Kodak Theatre, which was custom-built for the awards show and first played host to the ceremony in 2002, will be described to millions of viewers on Sunday simply as the "Hollywood & Highland Center."

The judge's decision came too late to remove the signs outside, which may cast a sense of gloom over an industry already rocked by technological change.

"I think everyone looks at Kodak's name coming off the theater with a degree of sadness mixed with respect," said Chris McGurk, chief executive of Cinedigm Digital Cinema Corp., which installs digital projectors for thousands of movie screens and is getting into the business of putting live video feeds into theaters. "It's just that the tide has shifted. The digital rollout is moving great guns. It's unfortunate that the great companies that helped build the film business can't all be part of it going forward."

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, which declined to comment for this story, is reportedly considering a move to a different venue.

The Academy won't suffer financially from the unpaid fee, since it doesn't have a direct relationship with Kodak and most of its $100 million annual budget comes from licensing the Oscar ceremony's broadcast, according to Moody's Investors Service. The Academy leases the space from CIM Group.

It's not as if Kodak didn't see the digital future coming. Last October, Kodak licensed its patented laser projection technology to Imax Corp. to allow digital projectors to work in domes and other huge theaters that were once reserved for film.

Even if its name is gone from the Oscars, Kodak will still be a part of filmmaking, as long as Academy voters continue to pick movies with that rich, grainy "film look." Kodak stock film was used to shoot Oscar-nominated movies such as "War Horse," ''The Tree of Life," and "The Help," even though the captured images were converted for digital editing and delivery.

Mark Graziano, senior vice president of post-production at "War Horse" maker DreamWorks Studios, said the end of the sponsorship serves as a reminder of the "lost art" of film production, and of the workers who once had titles like "negative cutter." It used to take two weeks, for example, just to prepare a rough cut for studio executives to view in screening rooms. The process is nearly instantaneous now.

"It makes you nostalgic for the days when we only worked with 35-millimeter film," Graziano said, noting that film still has a place at many studios. "You look at many filmmakers that swear by film capture, their movies always look gorgeous. It's hard to turn your back on that."

Event: Conference on Digital religion at the Donner institute ? NSRN ...

Following the earlier event listing regarding digital media and religion, this event should also be included. The event does not elude to secular spaces, but ?technology, media and social networking spaces are contested ground for secular and religious meaning making. The conference will address the ways in which religious communities are challenged by these technologies and in what ways they negotiate new digital phenomenon.

Conference: Digital religion at the Donner institute

13-15 June 2012 in ?bo / Turku, Finland

Place:
?bo Akademi University
Asa
F?nriksgatan 3 / V?nrikinkatu 3
?bo / Turku/
Finland

The theme we have chosen for the Donner Institute 23rd Symposium is Digital Religion.
The conference ?Digital Religion? aims to explore the complex relationship between religion and digital technologies of communication. Digital religion encompasses a myriad of connections between religion and digital technologies of communication and the goal of the conference is to approach the subject from multiple perspectives.

Developments in digital technologies are having a noticeably growing impact on the very character and nature of contemporary religious life and practice across the globe. Digital technologies of communication ? epitomized in the continuing development and proliferation of the Internet and online modes of communication ? are providing religious communities of virtually all strands with new means, environments and arenas within and through which to interact, express, and communicate their message in ways unknown to previous generations.

For many religious communities, this development has undoubtedly brought a whole host of challenges. Many religious communities today find themselves struggling with how to come to terms with a rapidly expanding Internet-based communications environment that challenges traditional understandings of religious mediation and religious authority. Nevertheless, there are also religious communities that have faced the challenges head on and come to thrive thanks to the new technologies or whose very existence is dependent on e.g. the Internet.

From a scholarly perspective, this development is intimately connected to ongoing debates about the impact of accelerating processes of mediatization and digitalization on contemporary religious life and practice. Though religion has colonized many different forms of digital media, it has also doubtlessly been altered by the media. This process is, however, complex and moves in several directions. Though digital technologies no doubt transform religion and the contemporary religious landscape, religion too can be argued to have an impact on the digital world.

Subjects for papers include but are not limited to the following:

- Theoretical, methodological and historical approaches to ?digital religion?
- Empirical studies of ?religion on line?, ?online religion?, and the relation between ?online? and ?offline? religion
- New media and transnational religious networks
- Challenges and/or opportunities for religions by digital media
- The Internet as an arena for religious/spiritual community
- Authority and legitimacy in digital religion
- Technological development and religious change
- Religion and digital media: appropriations, configurations, impacts

Q&A: Screenwriter Chris McCoy, Part 2 | Go Into The Story

Chris McCoy is pretty unique among screenwriters in that he has three scripts that have made the Black List: ?Get Back? (2007), ?Good Looking? (2009), and ?Good Kids? (2011). That alone is enough to warrant significant curiosity about this young writer. The fact his screenplays are highly entertaining, distinctive, and filled with quirky characters and strong dialogue makes it even more so. Therefore I was quite happy when Chris agreed to do a GITS Q&A.

In this 5-part series, which will run today through Friday, we cover Chris? background as a writer, reflections about each of his Black List scripts, and his insight into the craft of screenwriting.

Let?s look at each of these three scripts starting with ?Get Back? which made the Black List in 2007. Here is a logline I found: ?Centered on the discovery of a time machine by two die-hard Beatles fans, who travel back in time to prevent John Lennon from meeting Yoko Ono, who they blame for the break-up of the Fab Four.? How did you come up with that story concept? What about it made you think, This is a movie?

I started Get Back when I was broke, had no manager or agent, and I was still working eleven-hour days at CAA. I was out surfing with my roommate on a weekend, and we were talking about music because we?re both big music fans, in addition to being atrocious surfers. So we were hiding from the waves, talking about the Beatles, and I told him ? ?I?m going to solve this John and Yoko thing once and for all.? I just thought it was a funny idea.

The nice thing about being certain that you?re doomed for failure ? as I was at the time ? is that you can kinda write what you want, because hey, nobody is going to see it anyway. I essentially wrote ?Get Back? to make my friends laugh and solve one of rock and roll?s burning questions, and then when I got my manager Shawn Simon, I gave it to her and she did amazing things when it came to getting the script out there.

Get Back taught me that it?s far better to write to make your friends laugh, rather than trying to write to make everybody laugh. There?s a Kurt Vonnegut quote about this that I love:

?Write to please just one person. If you open a window and make love to the world, so to speak, your story will get pneumonia.?

That is so great.

After you came up with that core concept, can you remember how other major story elements emerged. For example how did you decide on Ted and Piero as the lead characters, and what was key in your mind about their buddy dynamic? How did you come up with the Parliament/Funkadelic Mothership time travel machine?

There was a record store called ?Spinnaker Records? in my hometown that I went to all the time, which is the name of the store in the script, and I just sort of modeled Ted on the guys I saw working there. ?High Fidelity? nailed the record store clerk mindset, and I?d be lying if I said I didn?t use that movie as a reference point when I was constructing my characters. For the Piero character, I used the name of my friend Piero from college ? again, when you think that nobody is going to read your script, you can do whatever you want.

The buddy dynamic I was going for with the two of them was that of a couple of guys who both thought they had been born at the wrong time in history, but for different reasons. One guy thinks that he would have been able to participate in the culture of the sixties, while the other guy thinks he would have been able to get girls. Both of them end up being right, in their own way.

As for the Mothership, when I was outlining the script, I was trying to think of a rock and roll way to get these guys back to 1966 in a ?rock and roll? kind of way, and it just sort of popped into my head ? the Mothership!

So I started researching the Mothership, and I discovered that the original Mothership had indeed been lost somewhere out in the woods in Maryland, which I thought was the single funniest thing I?d ever read ? arguably the most famous prop in the history of rock and roll, and when the band ran out of money, one of their roadies hauled it away and ended up losing it.

So I built the whole first act around these guys tramping through the Maryland woods, searching for the Mothership because they think finding it will solve all their problems. And then when they do find it and get it working? it turns out it?s a time machine that runs on funk. People have always seemed to respond to that logic ? the band was from Motown and knew guys who built cars, and everybody was taking a lot of LSD at the time. Building cars + LSD = time machine.

How much research did you do about England in 1966? About John Lennon, Yoko Ono and The Beatles?

A ton. I basically lived at the Santa Monica Public Library while I was writing that script, reading everything I could find. I wanted their voices to feel authentic, and I was focused on capturing the mood of Carnaby Street and the energy of the time.

There?s a Forrest Gump type dynamic to the story in that Ted and Piero intersect with a whole host of actual historical figures such as The Beatles, George Martin, David Bowie, Jimi Hendrix, and James Brown. Was that something you realized early on you could exploit or did that emerge later in your writing process?

I realized it early on. Writing that script was wish-fulfillment of the highest form: What would I do if I was around during this time? I realized I would probably mess everything up, and that?s what went into the script. It?s such a natural source of conflict, interacting with your heroes when you?re not supposed to.

From a writing standpoint, what was the biggest challenge in crafting this story?

Because people have such preconceived notions about Yoko Ono, it was a challenge to turn her into a love interest. I worked hard to show why Lennon loved her, which allowed me to show why my protagonist would have fallen in love with her too.

I thought one of the funniest bits in the script is how Ted?s plan to separate Yoko and John backfires so that via an iPod, Ted and Piero can see some Beatles songs ?in an alternate future including titles like ?Love, Love, Superlove (Rainbow)?. Did you just come up with those titles or could you hear some version of those songs in your mind? And how much fun was it thinking of early Wings-type, McCartney influenced song titles?

Some of those titles are real! For instance: ?Rudolph the Red Nosed Reggae? is the B-side to the single of ?Wonderful Christmastime.? Because it?s a Christmas song, it might have been a little unfair for me to include it with those other titles, but I couldn?t help myself.

But yes, even though Paul McCartney is a legend, it was fun to come up with alternate Wings song titles. Things kind of went off the rails for all the Beatles in the mid-70s.

What?s the status of ?Get Back??

Ask me in a couple of weeks. It was at Sidney Kimmel Entertainment until recently, but the option lapsed, so now we?re looking at other places for it. Getting a movie made is hard.

Tomorrow in Part 3: Chris talks about his screenplay ?Good Looking?.

Please visit comments with your observations and question, and be sure to thank Chris for his time.

This project went well for a while at least . . . - Family Woodworking

I was off work today and felt motivated to do something on the lathe. LOML has been after me for a bowl to put on the table by the front door for keys and such.

I broke out a 8" x 8" by 2" piece of maple that probably originated from Allen Levine's scrap pile. I attached a faceplace, rounded it out on the bandsaw and then started on the outside profile. I got the outside profile shaped, sanded and finished after a while. I need to get somesanding tools it I'm going to do very much of this sort of work. . . I need to dig back into the archives - Vaughn has posted the tools he uses to polish his bowls.

I then chucked it up in the lathe chuck and started hollowing. I need to get some lessons . . . I ended up pretty much scraping the entire interior of the bowl at I couldn't figure out how to use the bowl gouge . . . Next stop Youtube . . .

I was getting there when I realized that it had hollowed too deep and the bottom was paper thin. I attempted to continue but a catch on the rim shattered the bowl and ended this project.

I have 3 pic attached :

One showing the outside of the bowl - sans bottom,

Another showing the inside of the bowl pieces.
