Adobe Photoshop Touch: No longer just for tablets

Adobe Photoshop Touch

Adobe has taken their excellent Photoshop Touch application for tablets, and shrunk things down to fit on the smaller screen. Available as a separate download -- with it's own $4.99 price tag -- The app offers the same great features the tablet edition does, which are essentially the core features of the desktop version. The app includes the ability to work with layers, filters, and brushes all bundled into an intuitive, gesture-based interface. In addition, the application is integrated with Adobe Creative Cloud, giving users 2GB of free storage to sync projects between the tablet app, the phone app, and the desktop.

I use the tablet version of Photoshop Touch frequently, transferring images taken with my phone to Dropbox, then importing them into my tablet. The app is really well done, and takes mobile image editing to the next level. I'm not sure how well this will translate to my phone -- I'm currently using the Nexus 4 -- but folks with a Note 2 or even the original Note have another great use for the S Pen. You can find Adobe's press release after the break, and the download link from Google Play above.

Euro zone sentiment rises for fourth month in February

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Economic and business confidence in the 17 countries using the euro improved for the fourth straight month in February, the European Commission said on Wednesday, as factories saw their order books filling up.

Economic sentiment in the euro zone rose by a better-than-expected 1.6 points to 91.1, continuing a recovery started in November last year, the Commission said.

The euro hit a session high against the dollar after the data release, before slipping back slightly to trade around 1.3093 by 1035 GMT.

Economists polled by Reuters had expected a reading of 89.8.

The euro zone was managing to eke out a small recovery, but it was too soon to be optimistic about a broader trend, Capital Economics economist Ben May said.

"Clearly the Italian election and the political uncertainty and the market uncertainty that resulted from that is potentially another trigger for a new downward leg in business and consumer sentiment, and given that this survey predates that I think you certainly wouldn't want to assume you are going to see this continued upward trend in sentiment over the months ahead," he said.

The Commission also said business morale increased by 0.36 points to -0.73, reaching a level last seen in May 2012.

The European Central Bank's unprecedented decision last year to buy the bonds of governments who ask for help calmed the euro zone crisis dramatically, removing the risk for businesses of a break-up of the currency bloc.

The mood in factories brightened in February and managers told the Commission they saw rosier outlooks on expected production and on the size of overall order books. Morale in services also drove the rise in confidence, with service confidence up slightly as managers revised past evaluations.

Optimism was due to "sharp improvements in managers' assessment of the past business situation, and to a lesser extent, their views on past demand", the Commission said.

Consumer confidence increased marginally in the euro zone, by 0.3 points. Consumers were more positive about the future economy in general, but pessimistic about their own ability to save money over the next 12 months.

Target 4Q adj. profit beats Wall Street's view

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) ? Target's fiscal fourth-quarter net income dipped 2 percent as it dealt with intense competition during the crucial holiday season. But its adjusted results beat analysts' estimates and it forecast first-quarter earnings above Wall Street's view.

Shares rose almost 2 percent in premarket trading Wednesday.

The Minneapolis-based company earned $961 million, or $1.47 per share, for the period ended Feb. 2. That's down from $981 million, or $1.45 per share, a year earlier.

Removing certain items, earnings were $1.65 per share. That tops analysts' forecast for earnings of $1.47 per share.

Revenue climbed 7 percent to $22.73 billion from $21.29 billion. This met Wall Street's expectations.

Target Corp. foresees first quarter adjusted earnings of $1.10 to $1.20 per share.

Analysts predict earnings of $1.05 per share.

Linking insulin to learning: Insulin-like molecules play critical role in learning and memory

Feb. 26, 2013 ? Though it's most often associated with disorders like diabetes, Harvard researchers have shown how the signaling pathway of insulin and insulin-like peptides plays another critical role in the body -- helping to regulate learning and memory.

In addition to showing that the insulin-like peptides play a critical role in regulating the activity of neurons involved in learning and memory, a team of researchers led by Yun Zhang, Associate Professor of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology, show that the interaction between the molecules can fine-tune how, or even if, learning takes place. Their work is described in a February 6 paper in Neuron.

"People think of insulin and diabetes, but many metabolic syndromes are associated with some types of cognitive defects and behavioral disorders, like depression or dementia," Zhang said. "That suggests that insulin and insulin-like peptides may play an important role in neural function, but it's been very difficult to nail down the underlying mechanism, because these peptides do not have to function through synapses that connect different neurons in the brain"

To get at that mechanism, Zhang and colleagues turned to an organism whose genome and nervous system are well described and highly accessible by genetics -- C. elegans.

Using genetic tools, researchers altered the small, transparent worms by removing their ability to create individual insulin-like compounds. These new "mutant" worms were then tested to see whether they would learn to avoid eating a particular type of bacteria that is known to infect the worms. Tests showed that while some worms did learn to steer clear of the bacteria, others didn't -- suggesting that removing a specific insulin-like compound halted the worms' ability to learn.

Researchers were surprised to find, however, that it wasn't just removing the molecules that could make the animals lose the ability to learn -- some peptide was found to inhibit learning.

"We hadn't predicted that we would find both positive and negative regulators from these peptides," Zhang said. "Why does the animal need this bidirectional regulation of learning? One possibility is that learning depends on context. There are certain things you want to learn -- for example, the worms in these experiments wanted to learn that they shouldn't eat this type of infectious bacteria. That's a positive regulation of the learning. But if they needed to eat, even if it is a bad food, to survive, they would need a way to suppress this type of learning."

Even more surprising for Zhang and her colleagues was evidence that the various insulin-like molecules could regulate each other.

"Many animals, including the humans, have multiple insulin-like molecules and it appears that these molecules can act like a network," she said. "Each of them may play a slightly different role in the nervous system, and they function together to coordinate the signaling related to learning and memory. By changing the way the molecules interact, the brain can fine tune learning in a host of different ways."

Going forward, Zhang said she hopes to characterize more of the insulin-like peptides as a way of better understanding how the various molecules interact, and how they act on the neural circuits for learning and memory.

Understanding how such pathways work could one day help in the development of treatment for a host of cognitive disorders, including dementia.

"The signaling pathways for insulin and insulin-like peptides are highly conserved in mammals, including the humans," Zhang said. "There is even some preliminary evidence that insulin treatment, in some cases, can improve cognitive function. That's one reason we believe that if we understand this mechanism, it will help us better understand how insulin pathways are working in the human brain."

Happy, snappy tweets gain the most Twitter followers

Want to be popular on Twitter? There are plenty of people who claim they can help, but their tips rarely work and many of them are scammers. Now scientists have joined in, boiling down half a million tweets to a few simple rules for gaining a following.

C.J. Hutto (@cjhutto on Twitter) and colleagues at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta examined the content and retweeting fate of tweets sent by 500 non-celebrities over a 15-month period. They looked for 2800 terms that convey positive and negative emotions, including slang and swear words, a set of emoticons and common acronyms, like LOL.

By giving each term a score on a sliding scale of positivity they were able to assess whether Twitter users who used each term gained or lost followers. The keys to success, they found, were to tweet positive messages, write clearly and retweet interesting titbits of news.

People who tweeted mostly about themselves didn't fare so well. "Twitter is used quite heavily as a news medium," Hutto says. "My weak connections on Twitter care less about what I had for breakfast than they do about this neat bit of news I discovered."

Know your audience

Previous studies had suggested that following "important" people like celebrities and getting them to follow you back, alongside the frequency and timing of tweets were key factors in upping your number of followers. But the team's study suggests it's what's in your tweets, rather than who you follow, that has the biggest impact on the size of your Twitter audience.

How engaged people are with their followers also matters. "Twitter users who engage with their existing followers via mentions, replies and favouriting had positive follower growth, while users who mostly broadcast to no one in particular had dramatically suppressed growth rates," says Hutto.

Readability was also key. The team constructed a "Tweet Reading Difficulty Index" to measure how understandable the tweets were. Those whose tweets scored higher on the index had more followers.

"When deciding whether or not to follow a virtual stranger, we found Twitter users seek out well-written over poorly written content," says Hutto. "People rely on linguistic cues like spelling and vocabulary to compensate for the lack of traditional contextual cues available in face-to-face settings."

The researchers will present their findings at the Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems in Paris, France, in April.

News Summary: Professional Chinese hackers

9-TO-5: Internet experts say the persistence of Chinese hacking attacks point to the employ of professional cyberspies. Hacker teams regularly began work, for the most part, at 8 a.m. Beijing time. And Chinese hackers take the weekend off.

THE BACKGROUND: Accusations of state-sanctioned hacking took center stage this past week following a detailed report by a U.S.-based Internet security firm Mandiant. That fueled growing suspicion that the Chinese military is stealing national defense secrets, harassing dissidents and pilfering information from foreign companies that could be worth millions of dollars

DENIAL: Beijing hotly denies such accusations of official involvement in massive cyberattacks against foreign targets.

The Courier ? Product review: Technic High Lights highlighter

Highlighter appears to be one of the must have beauty products of the moment, helping create a contoured face with defined features. Alison Stainsby has discovered one to rival Benefit?s famous ?high-beam? at a fraction of the cost.

Those of you who, like me, weren?t born blessed with the cheekbones of a supermodel might understand why I have spent an abundance of time (and a little money too) in pursuit of a perfectly angular face. I can?t help but be jealous of British beauties such as Cara Delevigne and Kate Moss (honestly, Google their faces if you don?t know them already, you?ll be green with envy), but I know they probably have a combination of great genetics, and a talented make up team to maximise their assets. Bravely, without either of these, I have embarked upon the same challenge. Through the last couple of years, I have tried using darker shades of foundation to shadow my face, and bronzer to the same effect, but I never considered that the key wasn?t in shadowing, but in highlighting your face. Why not work with what you?ve already got?

It seems to have been only in the last several years that highlighter has come to prominence in the make-up world. Once just the secret of runway make-up artists, it is now available to you in high street shops for (semi) affordable prices. Whilst shopping for a highlighter, I came to realise that it is a fairly expensive commodity ? the cheapest one I could find was going to set me back ?18.50, and that was for Benefit?s notoriously good High Beam complexion enhancer. That was until I was scouring Amazon for bargains, and came across Technic High Lights: an almost identically packaged knock-off highlighter with good reviews, only costing ?3.00. What was there to lose?

It swiftly arrived 3 days later, and I was eager to test it out.

On a fresh face, I did my normal base of primer, concealer and foundation. Then I applied a small amount of highlighter to the tops of my cheekbones, as a series of dots using the nail varnish-style brush. I blended these in with the tips of my fingers, being careful not to veer too far away from the bone. I was left with very softly shimmering and slightly more prominent cheekbones. So obviously, being foolish and excitable, I applied more. This is where I give my first warning about this product: of course, it is meant to be shimmery. But when applied to large areas of the face, you may have the appearance of a 7 year old in glittery face paint. Furthermore, if you?ve got chubby apples of your cheeks, I would avoid blending the highlighter on or close to these.

I then, on the advice of my beauty expert friend, blended it just under the arches of my brows on the brow bone, and a small amount on my cupid?s bow. This had the excellent effect of lifting my brows and opening my face a little, and making my lips look plumper and more lustrous (without expensive and painful collagen fillers).

Overall, when used correctly, this highlighter gives a subtle sheen that really does give your face a touch of model beauty. Obviously I?ve got a way to go before I?m shooting for Yves Saint Laurent?s advertising campaigns, but for a product that cost ?3.00, I?m very satisfied with the results. I don?t feel that there?s a real need to pay another ?15 ? sure, the Benefit High Beam may last longer, but not long enough to warrant its highly inflated price. The Technic version had equal pigment to the Benefit one, and was the same consistency. Overall, I think you can?t go wrong ? save your money by buying a cheap highlighter, and spend it on something that?s really worth spending money on ? good foundation or lipstick, for instance.

Safety on everyone's mind at Daytona 500

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) ? Raymond Gober parked his motorcycle outside Daytona International Speedway, climbed off and briefly considered bringing his helmet into the track.

"I was about to wear it in, but I knew everyone would be laughing at me," said Gober, a pastor from outside Atlanta.

Maybe not.

Safety was on everyone's mind before and during the Daytona 500 on Sunday, a day after a horrific wreck in a second-tier NASCAR series race hurled chunks of debris, including a heavy tire, into the stands and injured nearly 30 people.

With small spots of blood still soaked into the concrete seating area, the accident raised questions about the safety of fans at race tracks. Should fences be higher and sturdier? Should grandstands be farther from the track?

NASCAR has long been a big draw because of its thrilling speeds, tight-knit racing, frantic finishes and the ability to get so close to the action.

That proximity comes with some risk.

And after Saturday's 12-car melee on the final lap of the Nationwide Series opener, some questioned whether that risk outweighed the reward.

"These are the best seats in the house, but they're also dangerous," Gober said.

Gober was one of thousands of fans who returned to Daytona less than 24 hours after Kyle Larson's car flew into the fence, crumbled into pieces and sprayed parts at spectators.

Early in the 500-mile "Great American Race," a nine-car wreck took out several top contenders.

Three-time NASCAR champion Tony Stewart and 2007 race winner Kevin Harvick were knocked out.

The wreck started when Kasey Kahne let off the gas to slow as they neared the first turn at Daytona International Speedway ? not too far from Saturday's near-disaster. Kyle Busch tried to do the same, but couldn't avoid contact.

Busch sent Kahne spinning across the track. Juan Pablo Montoya, 2010 race winner Jamie McMurray and defending series champion Brad Keselowski also were involved.

Thankfully, the wrecking cars stayed on the track. Things would be considerably different had they done the same Saturday.

"You don't have time to react, but I just remember thinking, 'This is gonna hurt,'" said Steve Bradford, of Dade City. "We were showered with debris."

Gober picked up a bolt that landed next to his left foot and plans to take it home as a souvenir from a crash that could have considerably worse.

He and Bradford have been coming to races at Daytona for years, always seeking out scalped tickets so they can get ultra-close to the cars zooming by at 200 mph.

Now, though?

"Needless to say, we won't be here next year," Bradford said ? meaning the seats, not the race.

He pointed at the upper level.

"Next year, we'll be up there," he said.

Not everyone felt the same way.

John and Andrea Crawford, of Streetsboro, Ohio, love sitting a few rows up. They were there Saturday and back again Sunday, just like so many in that seating section.

The area had rubber marks on seats hit by the tire. Several fans pointed out a chair bent backward, the spot one man was sitting when he got pummeled by the 60-pound tire and wheel.

"I'm not nervous," Andrea Crawford said. "It doesn't happen that much."

When Rick Barasso arrived at his seats, he noticed a few reporters and some tire marks. He asked what was going on and then couldn't stop smiling as he waved his friends over and shared details with them.

"These should be good seats," he said. "I mean, what are the chances?"

Maybe small, but there's little doubt the latest fallout could prompt NASCAR and track officials to consider changes ? at Daytona and elsewhere.

Daytona has plans to remodel the grandstands. Track President Joie Chitwood said Saturday's wreck could prompt sturdier fences or stands farther from the action.

"It's tough to connect the two right now in terms of a potential redevelopment and what occurred," Chitwood said. "We were prepared yesterday, had emergency medical respond. As we learn from this, you bet: If there are things that we can incorporate into the future, whether it's the current property now or any other redevelopment, we will.

"The key is sitting down with NASCAR, finding out the things that happened and how we deal with them."

Daytona reexamined its fencing and ended up replacing the entire thing following Carl Edwards' scary crash at Talladega Superspeedway in Alabama in 2009. Edwards' car sailed into the fence and spewed debris into the stands.

"We've made improvements since then," Chitwood said. "I think that's the key: that we learn from this and figure out what else we need to do."

Three-time Indianapolis 500 winner Johnny Rutherford said Sunday that things should be done across auto racing. It was just 16 months ago that IndyCar driver Dan Wheldon was killed when his car crashed into a fence at Las Vegas.

"Maybe we need a double fence, one behind the other, with maybe a space in between to do something to stop this," Rutherford said. "There's a lot of things. I'm sure NASCAR and the IndyCar series are looking at everything to make it safer. What happened yesterday was a terrible thing.

"The drivers, we accept that. That's part of the game. We have to roll the dice and move on. But you don't want to involve the fans."

Chitwood said any fans who felt uncomfortable with their up-close seating for the Daytona 500 could exchange their tickets for spots elsewhere.

"If fans are unhappy with their seating location or if they have any incidents, we would relocate them," Chitwood said. "So we'll treat that area like we do every other area of the grandstand. If a fan is not comfortable where they're sitting, we make every accommodation we can."

Few fans seemed willing to relocate.

"Real NASCAR fans ain't scared," said Zeb Daniels, who was attending his fifth Daytona 500 with his daughter. "If we see anything coming to the fence, we'll hit the floor and pray."

So why take a chance?

"We come for the thrill, the excitement," Daniels said. "We can feel the heat, the tire rubber in our eyes."

Obama admin. to Supremes: Strike anti-gay law | Strange ...

The Obama administration has asked the U.S. Supreme Court to strike part of a controversial 1996 law that bars recognition of same-sex marriage, even in the nine states where it is now legal, for such federal benefits as income and estate taxes and federal employee benefits.

?The law denies to tens of thousands of same sex couples who are legally married under state law an array of important benefits that are available to legally married opposite sex couples,? the Justice Department argued in a brief urging the high court to overturn the Defense of Marriage Act.

The justices hear oral arguments next month in two landmark marriage equality cases.? One is a legal challenge to the Defense of Marriage Act.? The other is a challenge to California?s Prop. 8, which rolled back same-sex marriage in America?s largest state.? Lower federal courts have ruled against both DOMA and Prop. 8.

Washington, Maine and Maryland voted last November to legalize same-sex marriage, and has seen hundreds of marriages beginning in December.

?Each time the Obama administration acts to support LGBT (gay and lesbian) Americans, it feels even more significant when considered in the context of Presidential history:? It was not all that long ago that President Reagan refused to help when many were dying of AIDS,? said Anne Levinson, a former judge and Seattle deputy mayor, and strategist in the 2012 campaign for marriage equality.

?President Bush embraced a platform and led an administration that vilified the LGBT community,? Levinson added.

Same-sex marriage licenses issued in King County

In its legal brief, the Obama administration argues:

?Gay and lesbian people are a minority group with limited political power.? Although some of the harshest and most overt forms of discrimination against gay and lesbian people have receded, that progress has hardly been uniform (either temporally or geographically) and has in significant respects been the result of judicial enforcement of the Constitution, not political action.?

The Defense of Marriage Act ?targets the many gay and lesbian people legally married under state law for a harsh form of discrimination that bears no relation to their ability to contribute to society,? the brief adds.

The Obama administration announced last year that it would no longer defend DOMA in court.? The defense of the 1996 anti-gay law has been taken up, and paid for out of public funds, by the Republican leadership in the U.S. House of Representatives.

The U.S. Council of Catholic Bishops has also filed briefs in defense of DOMA, arguing that supporters of traditional marriage would be subject to attack if the law is overturned.

It is essential to look beyond that to the total amount you will have to pay back again, compared for your current debts. The reason the monthly payment is much less is generally since the new loan is distribute over a much lengthier time. When you add up how much you are paying back in total over the lengthier period, you will often find that the consolidation loan is actually costing you much more than your old debts.

Equally, as there are specific circumstances whenever a consolidation loan may be useful there is also circumstances when alarm bells ought to ring and you should avoid them. The occasions when you should definitely avoid using out a debt consolidation loan are when you have taken one out previously and it has not solved your issues, or in the event you strategy to make use of it to spend off credit score card debts so that you can carry on utilizing the cards once more. Helper mayor resigns following third DUI arrest

The mayor of Helper resigned Saturday morning following his arrest on suspicion of drunken driving the day before ? his second during his term.

The Helper City Council and Mayor Dean Armstrong, released from the Carbon County Jail, met Saturday and the mayor, after offering a prepared statement, resigned effective immediately. The council accepted his resignation, said city attorney Gene Strate.

The council had already given Armstrong a second chance following his 2011 arrest for driving under the influence. Armstrong was arrested again Friday afternoon after a minor accident on Main Street in Helper, in which no one was injured, said Utah Highway Patrol Trooper Lawrence Hopper. A field Breathalyzer test indicated Armstrong?s blood alcohol level was .169, Hopper said. Under Utah law, it is illegal to operate a motor vehicle with a blood-alcohol level above .08.

"I have determined that I can no longer adequately perform the duties of mayor," Armstrong, 51, wrote in his statement, according to Strate. "Instead, I will turn my focus toward taking care of my family, my health and my business."

Armstrong, who owns a market that specializes in meats and baked goods, noted in his statement that he?s saddened that he cannot complete his term, though he feels that the city administration has improved Helper in the past several years. "The people of this community are strong, and it has been my honor and privilege to have served you," Strate read from the letter.

Armstrong was elected to a four-year term in 2010. Strate said he still needs to review the process for replacing him, since this is the first resignation by a Helper mayor that he can recall. Helper is a town of about 2,000 residents roughly 120 miles southeast of Salt Lake City.

Armstrong started a lot of projects with the council, including big improvements to the water and sewer systems that the city has needed for 70 years, said council member Kirk Mascaro. Mascaro will serve as mayor pro tem, a position he already held so that he could act in Armstrong?s place if the mayor couldn?t attend a meeting.

"Mayor Armstrong has been, I feel, somewhat of an asset putting Helper City on the map, and we?ve got to move on right now. I?ve got to fill those shoes," Mascaro said. "We?re going to move on, move forward and it?s not just Mr. Armstrong, the whole council will be getting these projects completed."

Armstrong?s first DUI arrest in office was in November 2011, also by the UHP, court records show.

In May 2012, Armstrong pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charges of impaired driving, open container/drinking alcohol in a vehicle, and failing to stop or yield to a traffic sign, court records show. A judge suspended any jail time and placed Anderson on one year of probation. The terms of probation included a fine. Armstrong also was ordered to wear an ankle monitor for 60 days. The monitor was removed in September, jail records show.

story continues below

Helper?s council met following the 2011 arrest but took no action against Armstrong, Mascaro said.

Court records also indicate that Armstrong pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of driving under the influence in June 1991 in Salt Lake City. He received a suspended jail sentence and was ordered to perform community service, pay a fine and attend alcohol counseling, the records show. An additional charge of negligent collision was dropped.

Let's create! Pottery HD for iPhone and iPad review

With it being sleep and relaxation week here at iMore for Mobile Nations fitness month, I've been on the hunt for related apps, and the newest gem I've discovered is Let's create! Pottery HD for iPhone and iPad. This pottery-creating app is surprising relaxing and fun.

The menu screen of Pottery HD shows a piece of clay slowly spinning on table with out-of-focus greenery in the background. As you move around your iPhone or iPad, the background will slightly move around as if you are changing your orientation.

After you go through the initial tutorial your inbox will be your source of quests to create beautiful pottery pieces beginning with your Aunt Chloe. Through her, word spreads of your work and other people come to you to make pieces for them.

To create a pottery item, you simply use your finger on the piece of clay. Moving your finger up or down the clay will make is taller and shorter, moving out from the center will make it wider from that point, and moving in towards the center will make it thinner.

After you've shaped your item, you must send it to cooked. As it goes through the firing process, a progress bar displays and the background makes it appear that the clay is in a hot oven. Then it's time to decorate it.

You can decorate your pottery with paint, ornaments and fancy brushes that stamp a pattern on your artwork. You do this all while the item slowly spins on the wheel. The constant movement in Pottery HD is part of what makes it so relaxing, engaging, and beautiful.

If you have an active quest, then a little picture of what you're supposed to create will be displayed while you work towards your goal. On this polaroid snapshot, there are two different objects: the shape and design. You can earn put to 5 stars for each one. As long as you get three stars in each, your piece will be accepted.

There are two things about creating ceramics with Pottery HD that are disappointing. The first is that when adding paint, sometimes it doesn't register the correct spot and actually adds the paint higher than you would expect.

The other is that sometimes it's way too difficult to get even just three stars for your decorations. The screenshot above demonstrates this -- my vase looks almost identical to the photo, yet I only earned three stars. The one I made before this one only earned me two stars even though it was just a little shorter. Both vases earned 5 stars for the shape, so I don't think it's fair that the height alone made me earn one less star for decoration.

If the ceramic you are making is not for a quest, then you have an option to sell it. You need coins to buy new decorating tools for your quests.

The good

  • Great graphics
  • Quests to make pots, vases, cups, and more
  • Earn coins when completing quests to buy materials to decorate your creations
  • Build your own pottery to sell and raise money
  • More decorations available as in-app purchases
  • Relaxing
  • Fosters creativity
  • Universal for iPhone and iPad

The bad

  • Touch isn't precise enough when adding paint
  • Sometimes it's nearly impossible to get 5 stars for the look your creation
  • No way to save snapshots of your pieces in the app
  • Once you sell an item, you can view even a photo of it in the app. It would nice to see a collection of everything you've made.

The bottom line

Let's Create! Pottery HD is the next best thing to actually creating real life ceramics, yet has the benefit of being able to kick back and relax while you sculpt your pottery without the mess.

What I Would & Would Not Teach College Students About Finance (1058428)

Most of Friday I spent as judge at the Global Investment Research Challenge for Washington, DC and Baltimore.? I really like working with students.? They are so earnest, and they work so hard.

Last year, the company was Under Armour, which was tough because it was a growth company.? Very difficult to value.? This year, the company was Marriott, which I think is even harder to value because of its asset-light strategy.?? Further, they have bought back so much stock that not only is the company?s tangible book value negative, but the unadjusted book value is negative too.

But for what it is worth, the students this year had similar views about the target company, and the range of target prices was small versus what I saw with Under Armour.

But when I listen to the students, I sometimes cringe, because I?ve studied statistics to a far higher degree.? Now, when I judge, I don?t take my views into account, because I know I am in the minority, and the students don?t know that they are getting bad methods for analysis.? Let them listen to their professors, who don?t have a clue as to how the economy really works, and express what they have learned.

But if I had control over what Finance students were taught, I would do the following:

1) I would reduce the math content for finance students and increase the qualitative understanding of markets.? No more MPT.

2) I would increase the level of understanding on how to relate with people, because that makes a big difference in negotiating trades.

3) I would want them to work in a simple business, like a hot-dog cart, or mowing lawns, so that they could begin to get an idea of how tough it is to earn a profit.? My best boss in my life grew up watching his parents? delicatessen, and it shaped his view of how to make a profit.? I didn?t have that as a kid, but I did have two parents who pointed out to me that life wasn?t easy.? The profits of my Dad?s business were by no means certain, and evaporated in the early 80s.? My Mom reinvested much of my Dad?s earnings into her stock portfolio, far exceeding what most investors achieve, but with periods that would make you wonder.? I partly paid for some of my college education by encouraging my Mom to buy a company that she previously sold that several years later went private for a handsome price.

4) I would revise the concept of the cost of capital to make it credit-centric.? All the efforts to calculate the cost of equity capital from equity market correlations are bogus.? They don?t make any economic sense.? In most cases, the cost of equity should not exceed the yield on an average CCC bond.

5)? I would tell them that changes in inflation and real GDP don?t have as large of an impact on corporate profits as is commonly thought, both positively and negatively.? I would tell them to focus on the stock, and drop the complex model.? Few in the investment business work off a complex model, and if you need one, you can buy Value Line, which I like, which tries to use a single macroeconomic model for 1700 popular stocks.? (and I get the model for FREE, because my county library subscribes to the WHOLE ENCHILADA, and I can ride on their back.? Morningstar too.)? I?m generous with my insights, but I rarely pay for services, because I know that they can be obtained cheaply, most of the time.

Positively

I would teach students to think on a higher level.? Not this causes that, but this influences that, and a lot of other effects occur as a result.? This is similar to Howard Marks? concept of ?second level thinking.?

By the way, I would do the same thing for the SOA and CFA syllabuses.? Modern Portfolio Theory is garbage, and needs to be abandoned.? We understood the markets better prior to MPT,

I would teach students that markets are not neutral, and that there are people out there trying to deceive you.? I?ve had more than my share of charlatans that I have had to oppose.

In place of randomness, and statistics that imply randomness, I would teach about margin of safety, and tell them, ?Do your hard work.? Analyze likely profitability.? Analyze free cash flow.? Analyze the likelihood that you are correct; make sure the price at which you are buying includes a significant margin of safety.?

I would tell them to analyze free cash flow.? Today, with the company Marriott, that was the only thing that mattered.? One team hit the nail on the head. The rest did not.? The team that hit the nail on the head is going to Toronto to compete in the North American competition.? Should they win, they go to the final round, I know not where.

-=-=-=-=-==?=-=-==-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=?==?==?==-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=?==-

Anyway, that is a start.? As with Buffett, who always thinks of what is the best way to earn and compound earnings, it is far better to analyze successful businesses than to analyze what academics think about business.? After all, what, academic has created a successful business?? Few, if any.

Canada ambassador says he feels slighted by "Argo"

Canada's former ambassador to Iran, who protected Americans at great personal risk during the Iran hostage crisis of 1979, said Friday if "Argo" wins the Oscar for best picture there would be something wrong with director Ben Affleck if he didn't mention Canada.

Ken Taylor said he continues to feel slighted by a movie that he says makes Canada look like a meek observer to CIA heroics in the rescue of six U.S. citizens caught in the crisis. Taylor said if Affleck doesn't say something in his acceptance speech "then it's a further reflection" on him.

"I would hope he would," Taylor said. "But given the events of the last while I'm not necessarily anticipating anything."

Taylor kept the Americans hidden at the embassy in Tehran and facilitated the escape. He became a hero in Canada and the United States after.

Affleck's CIA thriller "Argo" is widely expected to win the best-picture trophy on Sunday. Two other high-profile best-picture nominees this year, Kathryn Bigelow's "Zero Dark Thirty" and Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln," have also been criticized for their portrayal of some factual issues.

"In general it makes it seem like the Canadians were just along for the ride. The Canadians were brave. Period," Taylor said.

Taylor noted that former U.S. President Jimmy Carter appeared on CNN on Thursday night and said "90 percent of the contributions to the ideas and the consummation of the plan was Canadian," but the film "gives almost full credit to the American CIA."

"There would be no movie without the Canadians. We took the six in without being asked so it starts there," Taylor said. "And the fact that we got them out with some help from the CIA then that's where the story loses itself. I think Jimmy Carter has it about right, it was 90 percent Canada, 10 percent the CIA."

Affleck said he thought his issue with Taylor had been resolved.

"I admire Ken very much for his role in rescuing the six houseguests. I consider him a hero.?In light of my many conversations as well as a change to an end card that Ken requested I am surprised that Ken continues to take issue with the film," Affleck said in a statement. "I spoke to him recently when he asked me to narrate a documentary he is prominently featured in and yet he didn't mention any lingering concerns.?I agreed to do it and I look forward to seeing Ken at the recording."

Friends of Taylor were outraged last September when "Argo" debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival. The original postscript of the movie said that Taylor received 112 citations and awards for his work in freeing the hostages and suggested Taylor didn't deserve them because the movie ends with the CIA deciding to let Canada have the credit for helping the Americans escape.

Taylor called the postscript lines "disgraceful and insulting" and said it would have caused outrage in Canada if the lines were not changed. Affleck flew Taylor to Los Angeles after the Toronto debut and allowed Taylor to insert a postscript written by Taylor that gave Canada some credit.

Taylor called it a good movie and said he's not rooting against it, but said it is far from accurate.

"He's a good director. It's got momentum. There's nothing much right from Day 1 I could do about the movie. I changed a line at the end because the caption at the end was disgraceful. It's like Tiananmen Square, you are sitting in front of a big tank," Taylor said.

Taylor said Carter's remarks support what he has been saying for months.

"Canadians know the truth and a lot of U.S. citizens do. Those involved know it," he said. "If it conveys something about diplomacy I'll be happy if he wins. He's a good guy. He's very affable, a lot of talent."

Taylor's wife, Pat, said everyone has tried to be "diplomatic" about it. Pat, who was with Ken in Iran, would have preferred if the movie said at the start that it was "based on true events" instead of saying it was a true story.

"Even President Carter said that Tony Mendez, which is the CIA character that Ben Affleck played, was just in Iran for a day and a half," she said. "I think Ben has directed a very good action movie. Unfortunately people's perception of what actually happened is colored."

T. Boone Pickens is Bloomberg's No. 1 fan

T. Boone Pickens and Bloomberg outside New York City Hall (Holly Bailey/Yahoo News)NEW YORK?Michael Bloomberg remains cagey about whether he?ll someday run for president. But the outgoing New York City mayor received a notable show of support on Thursday from one of the country?s biggest political donors who has spent tens of millions of dollars in the past to elect presidential candidates.

T. Boone Pickens, the billionaire energy mogul from Texas, joined Bloomberg at a press conference outside New York?s City Hall to unveil the city?s first natural-gas-powered food truck and to talk about clean energy efforts?an issue both he and the mayor are passionate about.

Speaking to a large group of reporters and political types on a frigid February morning, both men showered each other with compliments. Bloomberg praised Pickens as ?one of the great Americans? in business and someone who has emerged as a ?powerful voice? for clean energy efforts.

?I used to read about T. Boone Pickens in the paper, and I never thought I?d know him on a first-name basis,? Bloomberg said.

A few seconds later, Pickens returned the compliment, telling Bloomberg, ?Mayor, if you were in Washington today, we?d be a hell of a lot better off than where we are.?

Bloomberg beamed, as several people applauded.

Pickens has been a longtime backer of Republican parties and candidates, including former President George W. Bush. In 2004, Pickens was one of the early contributors to the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, a shadowy political group that spent millions on television ads attacking then-Sen. John Kerry?s White House bid. In 2008, Pickens was a prominent supporter of former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani?s bid for the GOP nomination.

But during the ?08 campaign, Pickens reinvented himself as a green energy activist, directing more of his wealth toward promoting alternative energy like wind. In a surprising turn, Pickens later worked with Kerry on a climate-change bill in Washington that included subsidies for natural-gas-powered vehicles?one of Pickens? pet issues.

On Thursday, Bloomberg implied the men had grown close over their belief that the country needs to rely less on oil and more on natural gas and other clean energy. Together, they toured the Neapolitan Express, a new food truck that serves pizza from its 900-degree electric oven, which is fully powered by compressed natural gas. The truck, the first of its kind in New York, was funded in part with investment from Clean Energy Fuels Corp., one of Pickens? companies.

?Every slice comes with a breath of fresh air,? Bloomberg said at one point, reading from a prepared statement. He paused and then ad-libbed, "Uh, who wrote that I have no idea, but somebody on our staff is very creative and clever and should work for WPP,? the London-based advertising conglomerate.

After the press conference, Pickens ignored a question about whether he would support a Bloomberg bid for the White House. Instead, he and the mayor walked back inside City Hall together, deep in conversation.

Russian PM in Brazil seeking arms, nuclear technology deals

BRASILIA (Reuters) - Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev met with Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff on Wednesday on a visit to Brazil aimed at sealing defense and nuclear technology deals with a fellow member of the BRIC bloc of emerging nations.

On their agenda was the possible sale of Russian anti-aircraft missile systems to Brazil, a Brazilian government spokesman said.

Brazil is beefing up its air defenses ahead of the World Cup soccer tournament next year and the 2016 Olympic Games to ward off the threat of a terrorist attack during the global sporting events, which will draw massive crowds of foreigners.

Medvedev's trip follows a visit by Rousseff to Moscow in December that underlined the importance both countries attach to building relations among the BRIC club of emerging economies.

The BRIC countries - Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa - have a combined GDP of $14.9 trillion and have become increasingly vocal in criticizing developed nations' hold over global economic policies.

Ties between Brazil and Russia have been strengthening and they want to raise annual trade turnover to $10 billion from the current $6.5 billion.

Moscow will tout its advanced energy expertise and technology aiming to get involved in Brazil's plans to build new nuclear power stations to meet surging demand for electricity that has overwhelmed its generating capacity.

"We would like to offer our participation in the construction of nuclear plants and would like to get an invitation to participate in (the upcoming) tender," a senior official in the Russian delegation said.

He said Russia could train Brazil's nuclear staff, design research reactors and supply fuel for the future plants.

Medvedev also will try to clinch the sale of Russia's anti-aircraft missile technology, including the Pantsir S1 combined missile and artillery system and Igla-S portable surface-to-air missiles.

Brazil is interested in buying three Pantsir batteries with medium-range missiles and wants to acquire the technology to build the missiles itself in the future.

"We have already signed a commercial protocol on Igla-S supplies, which also foresees the opportunity of licensed production, but talks are ongoing," the Russian official said. "Licensed production launch may take some time, so they have expressed interest in importing Igla-S in the meantime too."

Russia is the world's second largest arms exporter and a deal with Brazil would largely be seen as a symbolic penetration of the Latin American defense market, after Russia lost some key contracts due to the Arab Spring uprisings in the Middle East.

Medvedev also will discuss the possible increase of Brazilian meat supplies to Russia, its largest buyer, the official said, but Moscow's sanitary authorities will make sure it is compliant with all the necessary standards.

As a sign of the two countries drawing closer, Brazil on Tuesday became the first country outside Russia to host a monitoring station for the Russian satellite navigation system GLONASS, a global positioning system that uses 24 satellites.

Medvedev also will visit Cuba, a former Cold War-era ally, where Moscow expects to sign deals on medicine, space and aviation, possibly including on the supply to Havana of three Ukrainian-Russian Antonov-158 regional jets.
