US urges quicker political transition in Egypt (AP)

WASHINGTON ? The Obama administration official who's coordinating assistance to Middle East nations in transition says he believes Egypt's military rulers want to hand over political power.

But Ambassador Bill Taylor says they could speed up the process significantly.

He says Egypt's Supreme Council of the Armed Forces is "uncomfortable governing." Taylor acknowledges criticism of the council's leadership, but says military leaders also acknowledge the dissatisfaction.

Taylor isn't addressing criticism inside and outside Egypt that the military appears to want to guarantee its strong leadership role in politics under the new constitution.

But he's suggesting that a presidential campaign should run parallel to the process of writing the constitution, instead of following the election.

He says that could speed the political handover by a year. Egypt's military wants to go slower.
