How to approach a migraine headache

Migraine headaches are known as a neurological disorder that can be characterized as a headache that is caused by a condition known as ?vasodilatation?. Vasodilatation is a condition wherein the blood vessels become enlarged and it causes dangerous chemicals to be released around the arteries of the brain. This then translates to a severe headache and feelings of nausea.

The word migraine is derived from the Greek word ?hemikrania? which means ?pain on one side of the head?. People who suffer from migraines usually feel the pain concentrated on one side of their head, hence, the name.

A migraine is cause by several factors. These factors are known as ?triggers? and vary from person to person. Some popular examples of triggers are allergies, bright lights, irregular sleep, tension headaches and fasts.

Although many people have identified these triggers to be associated with migraine headaches, avoiding these doesn?t exactly mean that you won?t encounter one.

The next step to understanding a migraine headache is to know the symptoms. The symptoms of a migraine headache are increased fatigue during physical activity, feelings of nausea, moderate pain on a specific side of the head, and the development of auras around the eyes.

An aura is condition that is popularly known as the main indicator that of a possible migraine. This condition is usually characterized as a visual disturbance. This visual disturbance is marked by a fading or blurry vision, consistent yawning and sensitivity to lights, sounds or motion.

This condition is usually experienced before the migraine headache or the initial stages of the migraine.

Another popular condition of a migraine is a pulsating or throbbing feeling on one side of the head. This is usually felt during the pain phase of the migraine and usually leads to nausea and vomiting. The next stage of a migraine is the known as the postdrome. The postdrome is usually characterized as the aftershock of the migraine. This is marked by a heavy feeling in the head, slight throbbing and a sore feeling on the side of the head where the throbbing was. This gives the person a feeling of being ?hung-over? or mentally exhausted. This is condition is treatable through continued medication, rest, avoidance of triggers and an increased intake of water.

A migraine headache may seem like a very tough condition to deal with, but it is curable. People have their own way of dealing with migraines but some of the better known methods are using analgesics, drinking coffee and sleeping in a dark room while others who have a more serious condition of migraines use prescription pills, surgery to repair nerve damage and hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

There are also preventive methods to addressing the problem of migraine headaches. Some examples of these prevention methods are avoiding triggers, taking medication and controlling symptoms. A migraine headache is a very common condition and is easily treatable. But there are some migraines that might be an indication of something more severe. Migraine headaches could be associated with conditions such as brain damage, blindness or an internal condition.
