HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) -? In our latest Money Saving Monday report, WHNT NEWS 19 focused on the season at hand ? the season of giving.
Did you know there are ways to give without giving?
It can be done through a website we ran across that sets you up to give without even thinking about it and it doesn?t cost you anything extra to do it.
Most residents of the Tennessee Valley do it every day and maybe several times a day:? eat out and shop.
You might as well add some holiday goodness to it through signing up for Goodshop.com.
It?s an online shopping mall that donates a percentage of each purchase you make to the charity of your choice.
And it?s simple to make it work for you and your favorite cause.
?All you do is you click through from Goodshop.com at the store just as you normally would.? said JJ Ramberg, co-founder of Goodshop.com.? ?You pay nothing extra and a percentage of what you spend goes back to your favorite cause at no cost to you.?
She said on average it?s about four percent of the price you pay.
And the site lists more than 108,000 charitable organizations from which to choose to receive the extra dollars.
There are 2,800 shops participating nationwide, including Amazon, Target, Toys R Us, and Petco.
If you use the search engine Goodsearch.com, it will donate one penny, per search, to your favorite non-profit or school.
Then, when you?re hungry, go to one of 10,000 restaurants nationwide that participate with Gooddining.com.
In North Alabama, they include Nothing But Noodles, Lawler?s Barbecue, Schlotzky?s, Wings To Go, D and L Bistro, the Melting Pot and Romano?s Macaroni Grill.
Each time you use your registered card, the restaurant will donate up to six percent of your bill to your chosen charity.
The sites make eating and shopping a fun part of this season of giving.
?You get to choose the cause, you get to choose the store, you get to choose the thing that you want to buy and you are doing a good deed by shopping,? said Ramberg.
And there?s more.? You can save even more money by using some of the 100,000 coupons you?ll have access to through these websites.
They benefit local causes such as the Land Trust of Huntsville, Madison County Volunteer Lawyers Program, Court Appointed Juvenile Advocate Program of Madison County, the Greater Huntsville Humane Society and the National Association for the Prevention of Starvation.
Goodshop staff said, to date, people have used them to donate more than $9,000,000 to charities across the country, with no extra cost to them.
