We would like to invite and inform you all about a candidate forum that will be happening
THURSDAY, October 18
7:00-8:30pm
Waianae District Park Multi-Purpose Room
focusing on Early Childhood Education
As you know, DOE Junior Kindergarten will be eliminated in 2014-2015, which is the program that allowed children who were not quite 5 years old to attend Kindergarten.
Many parents and families will be affected, including about 283 ?late-born? 4 year old children from the Nanakuli-Waianae Complex alone (not including data from Ka Waihona and Kamaile) ? that?s roughly 6% of the state total.
?Late-born? is the term for children born after the Kindergarten cut-off date of July 31st of that school year. (a.k.a. This affects children born from August 1 ? December 31, 2009 ? they will need to wait another year to start Kindergarten.)
See the DOE website chart here for specific info: http://doe.k12.hi.us/kindergarten/index.htm
The need to ensure that Waianae Coast families can find somewhere of quality (whether it?s daycare, preschool, family interaction programs, or home visiting programs), that is accessible and affordable to send their 4 year olds is essential.
This forum will be hosted and moderated by our organization, Good Beginnings Alliance, which is a 501c(3) non-profit which advocates on behalf of children?s health, education and safety from birth to age 8. Our campaign, called, ?Be My Voice Hawai?i?, aims to inform and build community public-will towards state funding for all 4 year olds to attend preschool at low or no-cost before entering Kindergarten.
Come join us, and ask the candidates where they stand on this and other issues related to our babies and young keiki.
If you have any questions, feel free to contact me.
