The Valley Vanguard ? Nintendo's Wii U game console not worth the ...

Like many college students on campus, I enjoy playing video games. I grew up on the original Nintendo Entertainment System, that gray box that used cartridges for the games. It wasn?t until I was in fifth- or sixth-grade that my family actually got a new Sony Play Station 2.

One thing that bothers me about video games is the release of new consoles. Remember when the Nintendo Wii came out in 2006? Yeah, that was an OK investment. It was the first time that a motion-controlled control was introduced.

And then the Xbox Kinect came out and then the Play Station 3 came out with some motion-device, too. Oh, you copy-cats.

Recently, Nintendo has announced the release of a new device. I thought, ?OK, this will probably just be some kind of new controller to make more money.?

Enter the Wii?s sister console, the Nintendo Wii U, set to be released some time in November. Like any curious person would do, I decided to consult Google.

So there are two sets: The Basic Set for $300 and the Deluxe Set for $350. Each of these comes with the new Wii U GamePad. Just looking at it makes my head hurt from all the technology-hate that I?m feeling right now.

The official website at Nintendo says, and I quote, ?The Wii U GamePad controller removes the traditional barriers between you, your games, and your TV by creating a second window into the video game world.?

Basically, one TV isn?t enough and now Nintendo is going to help you destroy your brain cells by giving you a 6.2 inch, 16:9 aspect ratio (whatever that means) LCD touch screen that includes button controls and two analog sticks, motion control, front-facing camera, microphone, stereo speakers, rumble feature, sensor bar, and a stylus.

What exactly is the difference between the two sets? Because if we?re going to be forced to buy this thing due to the discontinuation of original Wii games, we should know what we?re paying for.

The sets are essentially the same, only the Deluxe Set console has 32GB storage rather than the 8GB on the Basic Set. Another difference is that the Deluxe Set comes with a Nintendo Land video game, and Wii U GamePad stand, cradle and console stand.

The only good thing about either of these sets is that the Wii U is backwards compatible. No need to throw out all your old Wii games or your controllers. Yes, your controllers will work with this new console, so what is the point of getting the new one? Simple: Nintendo wants your money.

I don?t understand why old consoles have become obsolete. I still love the Nintendo Entertainment System, even though it doesn?t work half the time and you have to blow into the cartridges to get them to work.

I understand that Nintendo needs to make money to stay alive, but why not re-release old consoles and old games? Instead of having price-gougers on Amazon jack up the price ten-fold, Nintendo could sell those itself. You know how much money they would make from nostalgia alone? Millions.

Sorry, Nintendo, but I might have to pass this time. The Wii U is too much technology for me.
