Demi Moore has been hailed a heroine by animal rights activists after helping them win a battle to outlaw circus bullhooks in Atlanta, Georgia.
The actress wrote to the Fulton County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday, urging the politicians to enforce laws that prevent elephant handlers in travelling circuses from using bullhooks.
The board members voted on the proposal on Wednesday - and Moore's letter appears to have swayed them.
Bullhooks are already banned in the county at zoos and wildlife areas, but the laws do not extend to circuses.
The actress wrote, "Today, elephant sanctuaries and most zoos - including Zoo Atlanta - never use bullhooks or other weapon-like tools to punish elephants. I hope you will extend that inherent decency to elephants used in circuses... The elephants deserve our kindness, respect, and protection."
Moore's letter was part of an extensive PETA campaign to outlaw cruelty to circus animals, and the animal rights group is thrilled she helped them win the battle in Georgia.
Senior Vice President Lisa Lange tells WENN, "Thanks to Demi and others who spoke out against the use of cruel bullhooks, the days when circuses could get away with beating elephants until the animals cried out in pain are over in Fulton County.
"The commissioners' compassionate action should serve as an example to counties and towns across America that abusing elephants in the name of entertainment will not be tolerated."
