The number of pertussis, or whooping cough, cases in California is above 2009 baseline levels as well as the number of cases seen by this time last year, Dr. Howard Backer, interim director of the California Department of Public Health, told Lake County News.

?In 2010, California experienced a record high number of pertussis illnesses, including 10 infant deaths,? Backer added. ?While it is too early to know if this year will reach the same high levels of this debilitating disease, California is currently experiencing more cases than would be typically expected, but fortunately no fatalities.?

Backer urged parents to make sure their children are vaccinated and their adolescent?s immunizations are current and in compliance with a new state law set to go into effect July 1.

Backer also told Lake County News that parents of children in grades seven through 12 should make sure they comply with state laws requiring documentation of adolescent pertussis shots prior to entering school.

?Vaccination, including critical booster shots, is the best defense against pertussis,? Backer added. ?Parents of 7th to 12th graders must ensure that their children receive the necessary booster shot to avoid a delay in having their children start classes in the fall semester.?

More than one million students statewide still have not been vaccinated against the highly contagious disease.
