Thousands line Stockport streets for carnival parade - video and pictures

Thousands of people lined the streets to see all the colourful costumes and interesting characters taking part in this year's Stockport Carnival parade.

Organisers had been keeping their fingers crossed for the sun to shine and luck was on their side today.

The parade started at Belmont Way, passing Stockport town hall and finishing in Woodbank Park, where the carnival fun continued with stalls, rides and a giant car boot sale.

The procession included stilt walkers, dancers, a marching bands, the carnival royalty and more floats than ever.

The day ended with the official crowning of the queens in the park off Turncroft Lane.

One of the organisers, Sam Blewitt, 37, said: ?It has been quite stressful leading up to the day because of not being able to predict the weather but it was all worth it. The parade was brilliant and the entertainment in the park is fantastic. All the queens have had a great day and we would like to thank everyone involved in making it a special event and a big thankyou to all the visitors. There was a great community spirit.?
