Browns support breast cancer awareness

The Cleveland Browns have proudly partnered with the American Cancer Society on the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk by hosting the event for the last two years and they will continue their support for raising awareness about breast cancer throughout the month of October.

This month, the Browns will again support the National Football League?s ?A Crucial Catch: Annual Screening Saves Lives? campaign. The campaign aims to remind women at 40 years or older to get a clinical breast exam and mammogram every year in an effort to get early detection of the disease.

The Browns will show their on-field support by wearing pink gloves, captains? patches, shoe laces, skull caps, sideline towels, visor shields, cleats, mouth guards, chinstraps and wrist bands during games in October. The on-field items will then be donated to the NFL Auction at nfl.com/auction, with the proceeds going to help the American Cancer Society.

In addition, the NFL shield with the Breast Cancer Awareness ribbon will be stenciled onto the field, in-stadium banners and the game balls, as well as the coins for the toss and helmet stickers.

Coaches and team executives will wear pink ribbon pins, caps and wristbands, while game officials will wear pins.

This year, Browns president Mike Holmgren and five-time Pro Bowl left tackle, Joe Thomas, have recorded public service announcements advocating early detection. Holmgren, Thomas, two-time Pro Bowl kick returner Joshua Cribbs, linebacker Scott Fujita, defensive back Usama Young and kicker Phil Dawson have all seen family members battle breast cancer.

The Browns Women?s Organization (BWO) will wear their pink accessories throughout the season in support of breast cancer awareness.

During the Oct. 14 game against the Cincinnati Bengals, the Browns will again welcome the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority to Cleveland Browns Stadium for their 10th anniversary THINK-PINK! campaign in Cleveland. They will hand out THINK-PINK! ribbons to raise awareness for breast cancer. In the last nine years, the Zeta Tau Alpha members have distributed more than 200,000 pink ribbons as well as breast cancer awareness information cards at Cleveland Browns Stadium.

Breast cancer survivors will form the gauntlet for player introductions.

The Youngstown area was one of 17 regions in the country to receive a grant for those counties most at-risk because of low screening and high mortality rates. The focus is for community health workers to educate and direct women how to manage breast health. The Touchdown for Breast Cancer through One Health Ohio in Youngstown -- which consists of five centers that serve three counties in the area -- will provide on-site mammography and breast exams.
